53rd Journalism Awards Gala (part 1)
A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.
2nd Place: Brian Watt: KPCC
HM: Kitty Felde: KPCC
A5. ONLINE JOURNALIST
Daniel Heimpel, FosteringMediaConnections.org
2nd Place: Chris Hedges, Truthdig.com
HM: Robert Scheer, Truthdig.com
A6. SPORTS JOURNALIST

A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.
2nd Place: Tara Wallis-Finestone, NBC LA
HM: George Pennacchio, KABC-TV
A8. PHOTO JOURNALIST
Rick Loomis, Los Angeles Times
A9. DESIGNER

B. DAILY/WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS
Over 50,000 circulations – including news bureaus and correspondents
B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil
bank heist"
Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.
2nd Place: Thomas Curven, Los Angeles Times, ―Walking Away from Grief‖
HM: Kristopher Hanson, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Dangers Close to
Home‖

Portrait of a Long Beach Lobbyist‖
B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "The Dance of the Lemons"
HM: Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson, LA Weekly, "Culture of Cruelty"
B5. BUSINESS
Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, "California unfriendly to business?
Figures say no"
Comments: This is an authoritative and well-documented piece that
refutes the common wisdom of California's tax structure being unfriendly
to business.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "Barry Minkow 2.0"
HM: Donna Howell, Investor's Business Daily,

Kadhafi’s Africa: The Untold Story
THE MANY LIES TOLD BY THE WEST IN THEIR WAR AGAINST LIBYA
*A- THE REAL REASONS FOR THE WAR IN LIBYA*
1- The first African satellite RASCOM 1
It was Libya’s Kadhafi who gave all of Africa its first real revolution in modern times: by ensuring universal coverage of
the continent via telephone, television, radio-broadcast and the many other applications such as telemedicine and
long-distance learning; for the first time in history, a low-cost connection became available across the continent, and
even into rural areas thanks to a bridging WMAX system.
The story begins in 1992 when 45 African countries created the RASCOM organization to acquire an African satellite in
order to bring down the cost of communications across the continent.
At that time, calling from or to Africa had the most expensive call rates in the world, since there was a surcharge of
500 million dollars which Europeans collected annually on telephone conversations even within some African countries,
just to transmit voice messages via European satellites like Intelsat. An African satellite would barely cost 400 millions
dollars payable once and thus avoiding the 500 million annual rental fees. Which banker wouldn’t finance such a
project?
But the difficult part of the equation remained unsettled: how does a beggar gain their freedom from exploitation by
their master by borrowing money from this same master to achieve this?
And so, the World Bank, the IMF, USA, the European Union had needlessly been bilking these countries for over 14
years.
It was in 2006 that Kadhafi put an end to the agony of senseless begging from those supposed benefactors in the West
who only grant loans at predatory rates; the Libyan leaders put 300 million dollars on the table, the African
Development Bank put 50 million, the West African Development Bank contributed 27 million and it is thus, Africa has
owned its very own communications satellite since December 26th 2000;
The very first communications satellite in its history. In the meantime, China and Russia have jumped in, this time by
donating their own technology which allowed the launching of more new satellites; South-Africa, Nigeria, Angola,
Algerian and even a second African satellite was launched in July of 2010.
And by 2020, we are expecting the very first satellite which would be 100% African and built on African soil,
specifically in Algeria. This satellite is expected to be amongst the best in the world, but would cost ten times
cheaper, a true achievement.
This is how a simple gesture worth 300 millions dollars can change the lives on an entire continent.
Kadhafi’s Libya had cost the West not only the 500 million dollars annually but billions of dollars from debt and interest
which this debt would have generated ad infinitum and exponentially, and contributed towards sustaining the obscure
system which continues to rob Africa blind.
2- African Monetary Fund, African Central Bank, African Investment Bank
The 30 billion dollars which M. Obama confiscated belongs to the Libyan Central Bank and was earmarked as the Libyan
contribution toward the finalization of the African Federation in its three keystone phases:
The African Investment Bank to be based in Sitre-Libya, The creation in 2011 of the African Monetary Fund with a
startup capital of 42 billion dollars with Yaoundé as its headquarters, the African Central Bank with its headquarters in
Abuja-Nigeria from which, the first issuance of legal tender would signal the end of the CFA Franc through which Paris
has been able to pillage some African countries for over 50 years. From this we can understand France’s grudge against
Kadhafi.
The African Monetary Fund would supplant in each and every way the activities of the International Monetary Fund on
African soil – a role which, using barely 25 billion dollars in capital, the IMF had been able to bring an entire continent
to its knees through questionable privatization policies, as witnessed by the reality of forcing African countries to
trade-in one public monopoly for a private monopoly.
It was these same Western countries which came knocking at the door trying to become members of the African
Monetary Fund (AMF) and its was via a unanimous vote of 16-17 in December 2010 in Yaoundé that Africans rejected
this proposition, enshrining that only African countries would be members of the AMF.
It therefore seems obvious that after Libya, the Western coalition will declare its next war against Algeria, since, in
addition to its enormous energy resources, that country has financial reserves exceeding 150 Billion Euros.
This is much coveted by all the countries which are now bombing Libya all of whom have the same things in common,
they are all practically bankrupt, the USA alone has 14.000 billion dollars in debt, France, Great Britain and Italy each
have 2.000 Billion in public debt while all the 46 countries of Sub

Roy Norton: 235 Years of Canada - USA Relations (November 7, 2011)
The Foundation was honored to have Consul General of Canada Roy Norton visit Grand Rapids to Celebrate 235 years of Canadian - U.S.A Relations. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids hosted the special event, sponsored by The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, the World Affairs Council and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation.
Beginning with the early periods of both countries, Norton touched on the identities forged for Canada and U.S.A. by both the Revolutionary War fought against the United Kingdom and the War of 1812 which fought against the Untied Kingdom and thus Canada. Those Wars moved both countries in separate directions. The relationship though has always remained one of connection, Norton joked that "if America were to get a cold, Canada would get the flu". As America changed, the first place the ripples of change were felt was in Canada, sometimes years before the rest of the world because of the proximity of sharing North America.
Norton touched on the Treaty of Paris in 1783 which ended the Revolutionary War, the Jay Treaty of 1795 resolved disputes left over from the Revolutionary War between the two countries, the burning of both capitols in the War of 1812 York (Toronto) and Washington, D.C.
From a Michigan perspective, Norton also noted that at the end of the War of 1812, the lands in Michigan were given to U.S.A. With the Rush-Bagot Treaty of 1817 the countries agreed to limiting of warships on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain to promote peaceful commerce and cooperation between the countries. Its terms remain in effect today. (As a note, the Canadian - U.S.A. border is one of the world's longest demilitarized borders).
During the 1840s, the Canadian business community in Montreal wished to have full commercial union with the U.S.A. because of the increased opportunity for success with the American markets. In the 1850s the two countries removed numerous duties on natural resources and agricultural goods, followed by the fishing industry. Trade more than doubled in the next 10 years.
Canada joined with the Union to fight for "the North" during the Civil War, with as many as 50,000 joining the fight. As many as +100,000 slaves had fled the South to live free lives in Canada. Following the Civil War, their was worry in parts of Canada that the U.S.A. might turn north and attempt to invade Canada, following several smaller aggressive incidents by Irish Immigrant groups.
Following 1860's, much like the U.S.A., Canada began its expansion West and created the Canadian Federation, led by Sir John MacDonald, who helped lead Canada as the nation's 1st Prime Minister, also campaigned for the creation of the trans-continental railroad connecting Canada West and East.
Norton touched on numerous other overlapping perspectives from the neighboring countries, all with the emphasis on cooperation.
As the Consul General of Canada based in Detroit, Roy Norton represents Canada in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. The Canadian Consulate General, which he heads, promotes Canadian interests - trade, investment, the environment, culture and academic relations being among the principal ones. The office also provides consular, passport, visa and immigration services.
Born in Ottawa, Norton graduated initially from Carleton University, he holds Masters Degrees from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies as well as a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins SAIS.
Dixie Anderson introduced Roy Norton. Anderson is the Executive Director of the World Affairs Council of West Michigan, a non-profit organization whose sole mission is to provide education regarding America foreign policy and global issues. The World Affairs Council have joined with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum on supporting initiatives and events since its inception in 1981.

[STORY BY CAROL ROCK, AM-1220 KHTS] - Neighbors on normally peaceful Magnolia Glen Drive in Saugus woke up Saturday to armies of volunteers invading their block.
Football teams, ROTC students, members of youth leadership groups, bikers wearing black leather — their full-sized American flags proudly waving as they pulled into formation, legions of workers volunteering for their companies, set apart by their familiar colors (orange for Home Depot, blue for The Gas Co.), every person there with a single purpose — to roll up their sleeves and rehabilitate the home of Joshua and Windie Murphy.
To use the term "historic" to describe the turnout and effort would be an understatement. SCV Habitat For Heroes, a project of Habitat For Humanity, San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley will facilitate the reconstruction and repair of 10 homes belonging to veterans of the Iraq/Afghanistan wars during the next twelve months, with more to follow for all Santa Clarita vets in need of assistance.
The Murphy home was the first of the series; Joshua Murphy served two tours of duty with the Army in Iraq. He suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other injuries from a mortar blast that hit his guard tower in Iraq and is unable to work. Windie has become his full-time caretaker. SCV Habitat for Heroes gathered resources and manpower, bringing goods, services and about 300 volunteers to the home Saturday morning.
The laundry list of repairs was long — replacing windows, painting the house inside and out, installing solar panels, landscaping the front and back yards, rehabbing a bathroom and some of the kitchen, replacing appliances and making the house more energy efficient.
The project may be headed by Habitat For Humanity, but would not be possible without corporate support from companies like Home Depot and The Gas Company and sponsors such as Champion Windows, Rowland Air, Green Convergence, Creative Design Interiors, Advantage Disposal and Recycling, Stay Green, Inc., KHTS AM-1220 and others.
Along with hard goods, many sponsors provided supervisors for the project in their specialty areas, as well as many workers who volunteered their talents to work side-by-side with community members of all ages and disciplines.
Setup began before the sun came up; signs were erected in front of the Murphy's home, check-in tables and parking cones went up. Shuttles from Grace Baptist Church brought workers who parked at the church; volunteers signed up for their chosen area — painting, yard work, plumbing, and more.
After being fed by Corner Bakery, volunteers gathered for an official ceremony. Wayne Colmer, Chairman of the board of Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV welcomed the workers. "This is the inauguration of our Habitat affiliate's program hot ank our servicemen and women for the sacrifices they have made for our country.
"This may be the first home, but it's not the last," Colmer said. "Our projects take a village of local community volunteers to complete."
SCV Habitat For Heroes Co-Chair Carl Goldman said that when word about the project started getting out into the community, volunteers started coming out of the woodwork.
"It's really no surprise that there are so many people here. Once we put the call out, we had to turn people away."
Goldman introduced the Murphys, who stood next to the stage with their dog, Princess.
"We know that this critical home modification is only one way that we can pay back our veteran and that it will never amount to the sacrifices Joshua has made for all of us. We only hope that Joshua and his family can accept this as a symbol of our gratitude for him and what he has done for our country."
Michael Gallagher, Senior Vice President of The Gas Company began with thanks to the volunteers, adding that the Gas Co. is looking for veterans to assist and asking the crowd to pass along the company's policy of giving veterans an advantage when they are job-seeking.
"We've been working with Habitat for Humanity for awhile to do a little bit of what we should be doing as a company," he said.
Kim Cherney, the manager of the Home Depot on Newhall Ranch Road that provided most of the appliances and hardware for the project as well as manpower, said that the company's foundation is dedicated to helping veterans, budgeting $30 million to help families.
The ceremony was not without a celebrity touch with two stars of prime time adding their perspective; Kevin McKidd from "Grey's Anatomy" and Mark Valley from "Harry's Law." Valley is a graduate of West Point and a veteran of Operation Desert Storm. He thanked the volunteers and acknowledged the Hollywood Veterans group that had accompanied him to the build. He joked that he wasn't sure what they would put him to work doing, since "there aren't any jobs where I can stand around with my hands on my hips and su
