What is Ethics?
Ethics asks how we should live, what choices we should make and what makes our lives worth living.
It helps us define the conditions of a good choice and then figure out which of all the options available to us is the best one.
Ethics is the process of questioning, discovering and defending our values, principles and purpose. It’s about finding out who we are and staying true to that in the face of temptations, challenges and uncertainty. It’s not always fun and it’s hardly ever easy, but if we commit to it, we set ourselves up to make decisions we can stand by, building a life that’s truly our own and a future we want to be a part of.

ETHICS
When you’re faced with a tough decision, how do you figure out what to do? What guidelines or examples do you use to make up your mind, and what happens when there’s more than one good way to act? If you’re not able to answer, don’t worry--philosophers have been debating these issues for thousands of years. And in this BrainPOP movie on ethics, Tim and Moby offer you some simple advice on what to do when you’re faced with tough choices about right and wrong, or good and bad. You’ll learn some rules of thumb about ethical decision making, including ways to find a solution that does the most good while doing the least amount of harm. And Tim will walk you through the decision making process as you learn the most ethical ways to deal with common situations like bullying and cheating in class....

Although we might not realize it, we all face ethical issues on a regular basis. But how do we know how to respond well to these issues, to make better (as opposed to worse) ethical decisions? In this TEDx talk Dr. Michael D. Burroughs discusses the numerous kinds of ethical issues we face, possibilities for increasing our ethical awareness as "everyday ethicists," and the importance of introducing ethics and philosophical education in our schools. Dr. Burroughs also discusses the role of ethics in the lives of children and ways in which adults can attempt to understand and learn from children in ethical discussions.
Michael D. Burroughs is a philosopher, ethicist, educator (and beekeeper). Michael earned his PhD. in Philosophy from the University of Memphis and currently serves as Associate Director of the Rock Ethics Institute and Senior Lecturer of Philosophy at Penn State. Michael has published widely on topics in ethics, the philosophy of education, and childhood. In addition, he has devoted much of his professional career to practicing philosophy and ethics with populations beyond the university, including children in K-12 schools, prison inmates, and senior citizens. Michael's forthcoming book (co-authored with Jana Mohr Lone) is entitled Philosophy in Education: Questioning and Dialogue in Schools (Rowman and Littlefield, 2016) and addresses the purpose, theory, and practice of teaching philosophy and ethics in K-12 schools. In addition to his professional pursuits, Michael enjoys spending time in the out-of-doors, playing music, and traveling, among other things.

Norway's centre left defeats Solberg's conservative rule
The opposition Labour party has won Norway's general election, bringing an end to eight years of conservative government under Erna Solberg. The prime minister has conceded victory after Monday's election, paving the way for a centre-left coalition."We did it," said Labour leader Jonas Gahr Stoere, who will now try to form a government. The campaign in the run-up to the vote was dominated by climate change and Norway's oil industry. Norway's biggest export is oil and the green party campaigned to close production down in a few years to curb the country's carbon emissions. A Stoere-led government will mean that all the Nordic countries are governed by Social Democrat centre-left parties. Voters head to the polls for Norway's parliamentary elections, as seen in Oslo on Sunday, unseating the Conservative Party after eight years in power.
Throughout the campaign, issues of climate change and Norway's heavy reliance on the oil industry played a major role in debates. Voters in Oslo on Sunday too, cared deeply about these issues and felt it contributed to their voting decision.
"Some parties have changed their politics when it comes to the subject and some still haven't and are left behind in that era so I think it's, it's a few of the parties that have really stepped up the last few years actually," said voter, Oda Amalie Kise Hjertstrom.
The Conservative Prime Minister Erna Solberg conceded the election as results came in during the evening.
Labour Party leader and probable future Prime Minster Jonas Gahr Stoere now faces the task of forming a coalition government to meet the 85 seat requirement to achieve a majority in the 169-seat parliament. Parties likely to enter the coalition include Centre Party and Socialist Left.
SOT, Ane Emilie Bolstad, Voter : "There has to be changes in how we do things. We have to change our ways in how we search after oil. We have to do other things than go after oil."
SOT, Ane Emilie Bolstad, Voter: "I have voted for a party that wants to do better from now on."
SOT, Oda Amalie Kise Hjertstrom, Voter: “For me the climate case is like the most important thing in this election actually. I think it may have affected how I voted today. A Stoere-led government will mean that all the Nordic countries are governed by Social Democrat centre-left parties. Labour won 48 of the 169 seats in parliament, which is one seat less than in 2017, but Ms Solberg's Conservatives lost nine seats and now have 36. Mr Stoere is now expected to enter coalition talks with Labour's preferred allies, the Centre Party and Socialist Left, to secure a majority in parliament. The largely rural Centre Party was one of the night's biggest winners with 28 seats."As the biggest party, we will make sure that Norway will get a new government and a new course," the Labour leader said in a speech to party members."In the coming days, I will invite the leaders of all parties who want a change."Ms Solberg's Conservatives and their allies fell well short of a majority, winning only 68 seats. Congratulating her rival she said Labour "seems to have a clear majority for a change of government". In power since 2013, she pushed a more pragmatic vision for Norway, earning the nickname "Iron Erna". In office, she oversaw the tightening of immigration controls and favoured lower taxes to boost economic growth. She steered Norway through the Covid-19 pandemic but, while the country fared relatively well, she nevertheless faced a backlash over economic inequality and unpopular public sector reforms. In April this year, the prime minister was fined by police for breaking social-distancing rules at her birthday gathering, further damaging her reputation.
