Frida Kahlo de Rivera (July 6, 1907 -- July 13, 1954; born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón) was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán, and perhaps best known for her self-portraits.
Kahlo's life began and ended in Mexico City, in her home known as the Blue House. She gave her birth date as July 7, 1910, but her birth certificate shows July 6, 1907. Kahlo had allegedly wanted the year of her birth to coincide with the year of the beginning of the Mexican revolution so that her life would begin with the birth of modern Mexico. At the age of six, Frida developed polio, which caused her right leg to appear much thinner than the other. It was to remain that way permanently. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.[

Fragmentos de un excelente documental sobre la vida y obra de la pintora mexicana FRIDA KAHLO, y su tortuosa relación con el muralista DIEGO RIVERA.
Magdalena del Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, más conocida como Frida Kahlo (Coyoacán, 6 de julio de 1907- Coyoacán, 13 de julio de 1954), fue una pintora y poetisa mexicana de ascendencia alemana y española. Casada con el célebre muralista mexicano Diego Rivera, su vida estuvo cruzada por el infortunio de una enfermedad infantil y por un grave accidente en su juventud que la mantuvo postrada en cama durante largos periodos, llegando a someterse hasta a 32 operaciones quirúrgicas. Llevó una vida poco convencional, fue bisexual y entre sus amantes se encontraba León Trotski. Su obra pictórica gira temáticamente en torno a su biografía y a su propio sufrimiento. Fue autora de unas 200 obras, principalmente autorretratos, en los que proyectó sus dificultades por sobrevivir. La obra de Kahlo está influenciada por su esposo, el reconocido muralista Diego Rivera, con el que compartió su gusto por el arte popular mexicano de raíces indígenas, inspirando a otros pintores mexicanos del periodo post-revolucionario.
En 1939 expuso sus pinturas en Francia acudiendo a una invitación de André Breton, quien intentó convencerla de que eran «surrealistas», aunque Frida decía que esta tendencia no correspondía con su arte ya que ella no pintaba sueños sino su propia vida. Una de las obras de esta exposición (Autorretrato- El Marco, que actualmente se encuentra en el Centro Pompidou) se convirtió en el primer cuadro de un artista mexicano adquirido por el Museo del Louvre. Hasta entonces, Frida Kahlo había pintado sólo privadamente y a ella misma le costó admitir que su obra pudiese tener un interés general. Aunque gozó de la admiración de destacados pintores e intelectuales de su época como Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinski, André Bretón o Marcel Duchamp, su obra alcanzó fama y verdadero reconocimiento internacional después de su muerte, a partir de la década de 1970.

La obra de la pintora latinoamericana más famosa del siglo XX gira en torno a su biografía y al sufrimiento que vivió debido a su mala salud: la poliomielitis que padeció a los seis años y que no le permitió tener hijos, y el accidente que tuvo a los 18 años y que le dañó la espina dorsal. Kahlo pintó cerca de 200 cuadros, y entre los más famosos se encuentran: Las dos Fridas, Viva la Vida, Unos cuantos piquetitos y Diego en mi pensamiento.

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón nació un 6 de julio de 1907 y murió en 1954, recién cumplidos los 47 años de edad. La obra de la pintora latinoamericana más famosa del siglo XX gira en torno a su biografía y al sufrimiento que vivió debido a su mala salud: la poliomielitis que padeció a los seis años y que no le permitió tener hijos, y el accidente que tuvo a los 18 años y que le dañó la espina dorsal. Kahlo pintó cerca de 200 cuadros, y entre los más famosos se encuentran: Las dos Fridas, Viva la Vida, Unos cuantos piquetitos y Diego en mi pensamiento. -

Hasta entonces, Frida Kahlo había pintado sólo privadamente y a ella misma le costó admitir que su obra pudiese tener un interés general. Aunque gozó de la admiración de destacados pintores e intelectuales de su época como Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinski, André Bretón o Marcel Duchamp, su obra alcanzó fama y verdadero reconocimiento internacional después de su muerte, a partir de la década de 1970.

Born in Mexico in 1907, Frida became an international sensation in the world of modern art and radical politics. At times a socialist and revolutionary, she counted Leon Trotsky among her lovers but Nelson Rockefeller and Henry Ford among her friends. Living through political upheaval throughout her life in Mexico, she remained in her home country while her international fame grew -- she was the first modern Mexican artist to have her work exhibited at the Louvre in Paris. Although plagued by ill health since contracting polio at the age of six and later being involved in a horrific traffic accident as a teenager, Kahlo remained a vibrant force in art and political circles, a symbol of empowerment for women and for the disabled. The influence of traditional Latino culture on her work has led to her recognition as a figurehead for its revival.
This fascinating film features interviews with many of Kahlo's friends, including author and historian Carlos Fuentes, along with a broad visual archive of her life, including photographs, movie clips and paintings from collections across the US and Mexico.

Frida Kahlo de Rivera (born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón; July 6, 1907 -- July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán, who is best known for her self-portraits.
Kahlo's life began and ended in Mexico City, in her home known as the Blue House. She gave her birth date as July 7, 1910, but her birth certificate shows July 6, 1907. Kahlo had allegedly wanted the year of her birth to coincide with the year of the beginning of the Mexican revolution so that her life would begin with the birth of modern Mexico. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.
Mexican culture and Amerindian cultural tradition are important in her work, which has been sometimes characterized as Naïve art or folk art. Her work has also been described as "surrealist", and in 1938 André Breton, principal initiator of the surrealist movement, described Kahlo's art as a "ribbon around a bomb".
Kahlo had a volatile marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems. Many of her health problems were the result of a traffic accident she survived as a teenager. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people and this isolation influenced her works, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best." She also stated, "I was born a bitch. I was born a painter.
Aside from the 1939 acquisition by the Louvre, Kahlo's work was not widely acclaimed until decades after her death. Often she was remembered only as Diego Rivera's wife. It was not until the end of of the 1970s and the early 1980s, when the artistic style in Mexico known as Neomexicanismo began, that she became well-known to the public. It was during this time that artists such as Kahlo, Abraham Ángel, Ángel Zárraga, and others gained recognition and Jesus Helguera's classical calendar paintings became famous.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
After being attached to a number of actors, directors, and producers, this long-gestating biography of one of Mexico's most prominent, iconoclastic painters reaches the screen under the guiding hand of producer/star Salma Hayek. Hayek ages some 30 years onscreen as she charts Frida Kahlo's life from feisty schoolgirl to Diego Rivera protégée to world-renowned artist in her own right. Frida details Kahlo's affluent upbringing in Mexico City, and her nurturing relationship with her traditional mother (Patricia Reyes Spindola) and philosophical father (Roger Rees). Having already suffered the crippling effects of polio, Kahlo sustains further injuries when a city bus accident nearly ends her life. But in her bed-ridden state, the young artist produces dozens upon dozens of pieces; when she recovers, she presents them to the legendary -- and legendarily temperamental -- Rivera (Alfred Molina), who takes her under his wing as an artist, a political revolutionary, and, inevitably, a lover. But their relationship is fraught with trouble, as the philandering Rivera traverses the globe painting murals, and Kahlo languishes in obscurity, longing to make her mark on her own. Frida was directed by Julie Taymor, whose Broadway production of The Lion King won her international acclaim.
