An awe-inspiring engineering feat, Dubai Palm Islands is definitely the largest artificial islands on earth. The idea was first announced in May 2002 and the two manmade freehold artificial palm tree-shaped resort islands are expected to maintain Dubai's position as a premium tourist destination. The Palm Islands has also been named 'The Eighth Wonder of the World'. The two Dubai islands, The Palm Jumeirah and The Palm Jebel Ali, will be built in the shape of date palm trees and consist of a trunk; a crown with 17 fronds; and a surrounding crescent island - the back of which forms the breakwater. Collectively, the island will support more than 60 luxury hotels, 4,000 exclusive residential villas (sale), 1,000 unique water homes (sale), 5,000 shoreline apartments (sale), marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities, health spas, cinemas and various dive sites. The project took four years of methodical planning and exhaustive feasibility studies in Dubai, ensuring that the islands would not disrupt the environment. The first stage of the development of The Palm Islands, includes the construction of the land foundations, which involves sand transfer and rock placement. Following this, the next stage will involve the building of infrastructure and services, as well as the 300 meter (990 feet) bridges linking the islands to the mainland. The final stage consists of the construction of homes, townhouses, and apartments. The Jumeirah Palm island is primarily a retreat and residential area for living, relaxation, and leisure. It will contain themed boutique hotels, three types of villas (Signature Villas, Garden Homes, and Town Homes), and shoreline apartments. Construction began on this island in June 2001 and is expected to be completed by late 2005, early 2006. The Palm Jebel Ali is more of an entertainment destination for both adults and children, which caters to both residents and tourists. The island will also be 50% larger than The Palm Jumeirah, and will include six marinas, a 'Sea Village', a water theme park and water homes built on stilts between the fronds and the crescent. Construction began on this island in October 2002 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2007. It was announced on the 5th of October 2004 by the crown prince of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, that a third man-made Palm Island will be built on reclaimed land off the coast of Dubai's Deirah beach. The Palm Deira will be the largest of the three palm islands covering 14km (8.4 miles) in length and 8.5km (5.1 miles) in width. It will consist of residential property, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, and clubs. The residential area will be located on the 41 fronds and will contain 8,000 two-storey villas/town houses in three distinct styles - Premier Villas, Grand Villas and Vista Town Homes. The sale of The Palm Island properties (villas and apartments) are done on freehold basis, which entitles nationals and expats the right to sell, lease or rent their property at their own discretion. The free-hold property is tax-free, secure, and has sunshine the whole year round. Real estate owners and their immediate family, can obtain renewable Dubai residence visas, which can cost Dhs. 5,000 per person. Palm Islands are two artificial islands, Palm Jumeirah and Palm Jebel Ali, on the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. As of November 2014, only Palm Jumeirah has been completed. This island takes the form of a palm tree, topped by a crescent. After completion, Palm Jebel Ali will take a similar shape; both islands will be host to a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centres and will add a total of 520 kilometres of non-public beaches to the city of Dubai. The creation of the Palm Jumeirah began in June 2001. Shortly after, the Palm Jebel Ali was announced and reclamation work began. It was the first resort to be built on the island and is themed on the myth of Atlantis but includes distinct Arabian elements. The resort opened on September 24, 2008. The resort has two accommodation wings, also referred to as the Royal Towers, consisting of the East and the West Tower, both linked together by the Royal Bridge Suite. The resort's comprises 1,500 guestrooms and suites with private balconies and views over The Palm and the Persian Gulf. The Imperial Club has over 150 rooms and suites and two private club lounges, one in the 12th floor of the East Tower with views of the Arabian Sea and Aquaventure water park and one on the ground floor of the West Tower with an outside terrace. The Royal Bridge Suite, spanning the Royal Towers, is 22 stories up with views of The Palm, Dubai and the Persian Gulf. The two Underwater Suites are each three stories high with the illusion of view directly into the Ambassador Lagoon. The 46 ha (110 acres) five-star resort includes attractions for children and adults. The main attraction is a 17 ha (42 acres) water park with twelve water slides and a 2.3-kilometre river ride with cascades, tidal waves and rapids. There are two Mesopotamian-styled ziggurat temples reaching over 30 metres into the sky and featuring water slides two of which catapult riders in clear tubes through a shark filled lagoon. The Lost Chambers is an aquarium exhibit with over 65,000 fish and sea creatures including the Ambassador Lagoon, which is an 11-million litre marine habitat. The lagoon can be viewed at the base of the East Tower through a ten metre long, seventy centimetre thick viewing panel which looks into a representation of the ruins of Atlantis. Across the Aquaventure water park is Dolphin Bay, a 4.5 hectare dolphin education and conservation centre. The resort has a stretch of beach facing the Dubai skyline. The beach has over 700 sun beds. There is 1,900 m2 (20,000 sq ft) of retail space, including clothing and jewellery. Tiffany has a shop in the Avenues. Prices reflect the position and footfall. There is a spa and fitness centre, meeting rooms, and function spaces. The World islands are composed mainly of sand dredged from Dubai's shallow coastal waters, and are one of several artificial island developments in Dubai. The World's developer is Nakheel Properties, and the project was originally conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. As of 2010, only a single island had any building on it, which was a show home - all the other projects having been cancelled or delayed due to the 2008 financial crisis. While the developer, Dubai government, and researchers from the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology deny it, a participant in a related lawsuit alleged that the islands are sinking back into the sea. Timeline of construction Undeveloped islands on 1 May 2007 May 2003: The World development announced by Nakheel, total completion scheduled for 2008. Initially to have 200 islands and an area of 60,000,000 square feet (5,600,000 m2). February 2004: It was announced that The World will comprises 260 islands, and its area will be 6 km by 9 km, area of 250 - 900,000 square feet (84,000 m2) for each island, with 50--100 meters of water between each island. August 2004: It was announced that land reclamation will cost at AED 7.3 billion ($2 billion). April 2005: Sand dredging 55 percent completed, 88 islands have been completed. 30 March 2006: Richard Branson appeared at a media conference on the Great Britain island. However, this was to announce direct London-to-Dubai flights by Virgin Atlantic, and was not related to his investing in the project. October 2006: Seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher was presented with one of the islands by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on the occasion of his final Grand Prix, in Brazil. Schumacher's manager Willi Weber, suggested, "Perhaps he'll build a kart racing track on [the island]. December 2006: The World reclamation 90 percent completed. October 2007: Nakheel announced the sale of Ireland, and Shanghai in October 2007. 15 November 2007: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were reported to have purchased the island Ethiopia. This has since been denied by the couple. January 2008: The World breakwater is completed. 19 February 2008: Cinnovation Group has acquired a 37,000 square metres (400,000 sq ft) island as part of a project valued at $200 million USD. Guest and residential villas and a hospitality complex are planned. October 2009: An Emirates Business report on 13 October 2009 that 2 islands were sold in July and August 2009. December 2009: Dubai based Kleindienst Group say they will start construction of the Heart of Europe in early 2010 according to a press report of 17 December 2009. Islands include Austria, Germany, Netherlands, St Petersburg, Sweden and Switzerland. January 2010: On 28 January 2010 Emirates Business reported that Major Trade have started development of their projects on an island in the Greenland area, a villa and hotel resort. 23 February 2010: Dubai-based Kleindienst Group starts work on the Germany island of The World, according to a press release on 24 February 2010.
