Emma Maersk | World's Largest Cargo Ship | History Documentary Films
Emma Mærsk is the first container ship in the E-class of eight owned by the A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. When launched in 2006 she was the largest container ship ever built, and in 2010 she and her seven sister ships were among the longest container ships. Officially, she is able to carry around 11,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) or 14,770 TEU depending on definition. In May 2010, her sister ship Ebba Mærsk set a record of 15,011 TEU in Tanger-Med, Tangiers.

A.P. Moller – Maersk Group (Danish: A.P. Møller – Mærsk Gruppen), also known as Maersk (Danish: Mærsk), is a Danish business conglomerate. A.P. Moller – Maersk Group has activities in a variety of business sectors, primarily within the transportation and energy sectors. It is the largest container ship operator and supply vessel operator in the world since 1996.
A.P. Moller – Maersk Group is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, with subsidiaries and offices in more than 135 countries worldwide and around 108,000 employees. It ranked 147 on the Fortune Global 500 list for 2010, down from 106 in 2009.
A.P. Moller – Maersk Group started as the shipping company Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg, founded by captain Peter Mærsk-Møller and his son Arnold Peter Møller (2 October 1876–June 1965) in Svendborg, 1904. A.P. Møller had four children, two by each of his two wives Chastine Estelle Roberta Mc-Kinney and Norwegian-born Pernille Ulrikke Amalie Nielsen. A.P. Møller's second child was Arnold Mærsk McKinney Møller (13 July 1913–16 April 2012). In 1939, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller became a partner in the company. Following the death of A.P. Møller in June 1965, he became CEO of the company and held this post until 1993, when he was succeeded by Jess Søderberg. Beginning in 1965, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller also served as company chairman and did not relinquish this position until December 2003 (90 years old), when the chairmanship was taken over by Michael Pram Rasmussen. Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller was until his death one of the "managing owners" of the company and was chairman of Odense Steel Shipyard until 2 May 2006.

While the new Triple-E class is only a few meters longer and wider than the current world record holder in size, it offers no less than 16 per cent more container space due to its wider, more bulbous bow.
The wide body allows room for an additional row of containers.
Moving the bridge forward improves the line of sight and makes it possible to stack containers higher.
Moving the engine backwards increases stability and allows for more containers below and above deck.
It all adds up to a 16% capacity improvement over the previous world record, and contributing to the 50% decrease in co2 emissions making the Triple-E the most advanced and efficient ship in the world.

The Triple-E vessel also had a record number of 298 containers loaded at the 10th tier on deck, which was a first time ever for the port of Rotterdam. This video was made while the vessel was moored alongside APMT Maasvlakte II and got towed into the right position to start its journey!

ANTWERPEN - Op de haven van Antwerpen lijkt geen maat te staan. Een containerschip met een recorddiepgang van 15,65 meter heeft de haven bereikt over de Westerschelde. Het gaat om de Eleonora Maersk, een containerreus van 397,71 meter lang en 56,40 meter breed. Het schip is in de nacht van woensdag op donderdag zoveel mogelijk bij hoogtij de Westerschelde opgevaren, tot de ligplaats in het Deurganckdok bij het Scheldedorp Doel. PZC 18-2-2016: Sinds de derde verdieping van de vaargeul in de Westerschelde in 2010 kan de rivier, ongeacht het tij, schepen hebben met een diepgang van 13,10 meter. Bij hoogwater kan dat uiteraard meer zijn. -

Denmark loves to celebrate its Queen's birthday. Join the festivities.
A great time to visit Copenhagen is during the queen's birthday. Today is April 16, 2007 and Queen Margrethe, who has been the queen since 1972, turns 67 today. Dannebrog, the name of the Danish flag, is not a sign of where it belonged politically. It is a way of showing that your heart is in Denmark and the jewel belong to Denmark. The flag means something nice, something to celebrate, or just Danes. The main activities are taking place at Amalienborg Palace. You can see the changing of the guards and you can see the guards are wearing the really cool outfit, the red and blue attire. At 12 o'clock, the crowd is going to get crazy when the Queen appears at the balcony with her family. From the left you can see Marie and you can see Frederick, the guy who is going to become the king. You can see Margrethe, the queen, and then you can see the small kids as well.
Usually, the crowd is not satisfied by seeing the Queen once so after she goes back inside the building, they had be yelling for her to come out again and again by saying "dronning, dronning, kom nu fren, ellers gar vi aldrig hjem" which means queen, queen, come back out otherwise we will never leave. Oh yeah, because today is a wonderful tradition to visit the queen on her birthday, to feel you are a part of the Danish community. This garden called Amaliehaven was given to the queen on her 50th birthday. It was given by a wealthy businessman called Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller. Behind me is the Caritas fountain. On the queen's birthday, you can see golden apples on the top. Originally, this was actually a whale where inhabitants of Copenhagen could come and get fresh water. In this short film I tried to show most of the places on the Queen Mary 2 where passengers can spend their time. When you see places without people, it's because I shot them very early or late, when most of my fellow passengers were sleeping or busy doing something else.

The Suez Canal (Arabic: قناة السويس Qanāt al-Suways) is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez, and separates the African continent from Asia. After 10 years of construction, it was officially opened on November 17, 1869. The canal allows ships to travel between Europe and South Asia without navigating around Africa, thereby reducing the sea voyage distance by about 7,000 kilometres (4,300 mi). It extends 193.30 km (120.11 mi) from the northern terminus of Port Said to the southern terminus of Port Tewfik at the city of Suez. In 2012, 17,225 vessels traversed the canal (47 per day).
The canal is a single-lane waterway with passing locations in the Ballah Bypass and the Great Bitter Lake. It contains no locks system, with seawater flowing freely through it. In general, the canal north of the Bitter Lakes flows north in winter and south in summer. South of the lakes, the current changes with the tide at Suez.
The canal is owned and maintained by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) of Egypt. Under the Convention of Constantinople, it may be used "in time of war as in time of peace, by every vessel of commerce or of war, without distinction of flag."
In August 2014, construction was launched to expand and widen the Ballah Bypass for 35 km (22 mi) to speed the canal's transit time. The expansion is expected to double the capacity of the Suez Canal from 49 to 97 ships a day.[6] At a cost of $8.4 billion, this project was funded with interest-bearing investment certificates issued exclusively to Egyptian entities and individuals. The "New Suez Canal", as the expansion was dubbed, was opened with great fanfare in a ceremony on 6 August 2015.

Cruising on Cruise ships is a means of travel with some substantial benefits, but a few drawbacks too. The majority of people love them, but some people hate them. Cruising makes it easy to visit several places in a single trip without the need to repack your belongings and sit in a car/train/bus/plane to travel to each one; your hotel room comes along with you, and even provides the transportation.
Additionally, seeing several islands or cities in a region can help you decide if and where you'd want to visit later for a longer time. Typical itineraries also limit the time you can spend in each place, usually just a short day of activities or sightseeing. They may also include one or more days at sea: paradise if you enjoy a relaxing day by the pool, but frustrating if you prefer more active and open exploration. Nonetheless, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks for enough people to support a growing industry.
Today you can visit every continent on earth, including Antarctica, by cruise ship. The most exotic itineraries, such as the Galapagos Islands, are best visited by small expedition vessels. While these cruises are expensive, you'll be traveling with expert guides and excursions are usually included.
As you may note already, this article focuses on ocean cruising and ships. A parallel article (to be developed) would focus on river boat and barge canal cruising. River boats and barges offer more in-depth, close-up looks at many countries in their interiors. For travel on smaller vessels, see Cruising on small craft.
Carnival Corporation is the giant in the ocean cruise industry. It owns Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Holland America, Cunard Line, Costa Cruises and Seabourn Cruises. The other major cruise lines are Royal Caribbean International, which owns Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises, Oceania Cruises and P&O;, which caters to the British market, and Norwegian Cruise Lines, which caters primarily to passengers on the United States' east coast with year round sailings from New York City and Miami.
Some ships have been outfitted with millions of dollars worth of art and elaborate interior decor, but generally after a few days there isn't that much to see on most cruise ships. The real sights are ashore. Some ships travel to geographically interesting areas such as Alaska or Scandinavia where they make detours to view fjords and glaciers up-close. Generally speaking, the smaller the ship, the better proximity to scenery you can expect, because they won't need to stick to deep and open water. On large ships, other scenery may be too far off to really enjoy its details, though binoculars help. Depending on the region and season, you may spot whales, dolphins, or flying fish swimming nearby or even following alongside.
Lacking those benefits, the real sightseeing opportunities come as you approach and reach port, and as you take shore outings discussed below.
