Japanese Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga strongly denounced North Korea's three missile test launches into Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone on Monday (September 5), saying their actions not only provoked Japan but also the international community, as they coincided with leaders of the Group of 20 major economies meeting in China - the North's diplomatic ally. "This launch is a clear act of provocation," Suga said in Tokyo. "The government will take steps to cooperate with the U.N. Security Council along with the United States and South Korea, to invoke restraint from North Korea, and also to prepare ourselves fully for any situation that may arise." Japan says South Korea should not attach any preconditions to their leaders′ summit. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Tuesday... the issue of Japan′s wartime sexual enslavement should not be used politically or diplomatically. This comes a day after President Park Geun-hye called on Japan to change its stance... in order to make the summit meaningful and productive... in her New Year′s press conference.
One of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe′s closest aides is urging Korea to not attach any preconditions to a possible bilateral summit between the two countries. Abe′s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Tuesday that the issue of Japan′s sexual enslavement of Korean women before and during World War Two should not stand in the way of a potential summit. His remarks came a day after President Park Geun-hye told reporters that she was open to holding a summit with Abe. President Park added however that, in order for a summit to be productive, the sex slavery issue must first be addressed. Speaking on the issue on Tuesday, Suga said Japan maintains its stance that it should NOT be made into a political and diplomatic issue.
