Filter may refer to:
In photography and optics, a neutral-density filter, or ND filter, is a filter that reduces or modifies the intensity of all wavelengths, or colors, of light equally, giving no changes in hue of color rendition. It can be a colorless (clear) or grey filter. The purpose of a standard photographic neutral-density filter is to reduce the amount of light entering the lens. Doing so allows the photographer to select combinations of aperture, exposure time and sensor sensitivity that would otherwise produce overexposed pictures. This is done to achieve effects such as a shallower depth of field or motion blur of a subject in a wider range of situations and atmospheric conditions.
For example, one might wish to photograph a waterfall at a slow shutter speed to create a deliberate motion-blur effect. The photographer might determine that to obtain the desired effect, a shutter speed of ten seconds was needed. On a very bright day, there might be so much light that even at minimal film speed and a minimal aperture, the ten-second shutter speed would let in too much light, and the photo would be overexposed. In this situation, applying an appropriate neutral-density filter is the equivalent of stopping down one or more additional stops, allowing the slower shutter speed and the desired motion-blur effect.
The neutral density ( ) is a variable used in oceanography, introduced in 1997 by David R. Jackett and Trevor J. McDougall. It is function of the three state variables (salinity, temperature, and pressure) and the geographical location (longitude and latitude) and it has the typical units of density (M/V). The level surfaces of form the “neutral density surfaces”, which are the most natural layer interfaces stratifying the deep ocean circulation, along which the strong lateral mixing in the ocean occurs. These surfaces are used in the analyses of ocean data and to perform models of the ocean circulation. The formation of neutral density surfaces from a given hydrographic observation requires only a call to a computational code (available for Matlab and Fortran), that contains the computational algorithm developed by Jackett and McDougall.
A neutral density surface is the surface along which a given water mass will move, remaining neutrally buoyant.
See the follow-up video here: https://youtu.be/-rBdqlBbNDE ND, UV, and polarizing filters can get expensive, they're a pain to use, they reduce your image quality, and you NEVER seem to have them when you need them! I show you how to get better results without using filters, saving you money and time. Share with your friends to save them some cash! Regarding polarizing filters: Several people have commented that polarizing filters cut glare and reflection, and you can't replicate that in Photoshop. That's true, and I do demonstrate it in the video. Yes, you can create scenarios where a polarizing filter does something unique. However, in many years of shooting, I've rarely found that removing the glare creates a "good" picture. Back in the film days, I used a polarizing filter almost ...

ND Filters are all about holding back light to give you a slow shutter speed. And my favorite ND filter is the Lee Big Stopper - called Big Stopper because it stops loads of light entering the lens so you can really exploit movement blur. As with all things photography just buying a bit of kit won't give you great images. You have to work out what will or won't work as an image and then set everything up accordingly to make it happen. In this photography video I'm going out to look for the kind of photos that'll work and will talk you through what i'm doing with the ND filter, camera setting and explain why. Part 1 - How to use a neutral density filter with ace landscape photographer Tom Mackie and I is on our site at http://www.photographycourses.biz/how_to_use_a_neutral_density_filter...
http://froknowsphoto.com/variable-nd-filter/ Roughly four years ago I started to shoot video with my DSLR. I had zero background in the fundamentals of video and only knew how to get the proper exposure. I have worked hard to learn as much as possible to make me an even more well rounded content creator. Let me explain to you why you should have a variable ND Filter in your bag for video. Taking the video as our example we start off with the settings of 100 ISO F22 1/50th of a second. In a future video I will explain the reason for shooting at 1/50th when your frame rate is at 24p. Because it is so bright out we had to go to F22 and drop our ISO to get our 1/50th of a second exposure. If it were any brighter we would have to raise the shutter speed which would break some gen...
Neutral Density Filter (ND Filter - ND8) In this tutorial we learn to use an ND filter. I will be using an ND8 filter to take photos. Neutral Density filters are used to filter the light by a few stops (depending on the density of the filter). http://www.mujahidurrehman.com/photography-blogs/

In this episode, Dave McKane of the Institute of Photography talks about filters, both in front of the camera, and behind, in software. Topics include UV Filters, Polarisers, Neutral Density (ND) Filters, and Neutral Density Graduated Filters (ND Grads). He also talks about the issues with Variable ND Filters, and shows how to get a Neutral Density Graduated Filter in Photoshop/Elements.

Genustech Fader ND Filter To set the proper position of the polarizer I just put the disassembled polarizer up to the lens with ND filter on set to middle position and slowly rotate the disassembled polarizer till the color of the scene did not look brown. Then I taped the top of the disassembled polarizer to mark that position. Because your iris is open really wide, lets say at f4.0, all that sun lite will blow your shot out. So you need to use some sort of ND (neutral density)...
