Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra, recorded in Hollywood on July 23, 1937. This tune, the radio theme song for the Casa Loma Orchestra, is one of the smoothest and most beautiful ballads recorded during the Big Band era. With this arrangement, which juxtaposes Billy Rauch's upper register trombone over a full clarinet section playing in the lower register, the Casa Loma Orchestra approaches the sublety of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Clarinet solo is by Clarence Hutchenrider. It is said that Billy Rauch practiced his trombone solo for half an hour before each broadcast, so he would continue to play it perfectly. Many other bands "covered" this tune, but none featured a copy of Rauch's solo. From the original 78 rpm record. Accompanied by a slideshow featuring images from the days when Hollywood considered cigarettes to be an essential glamour accessory. Enjoy!

Glen Gray Knoblauch, known as Glen Gray, (June 7,1900 - Aug.23,1963, Plymouth, Massachusetts)
was a jazz saxophonist and leader of the Casa Loma Orchestra.
Gray was born Metamora, Illinois. When he was 13 years old, Gray organized a group known as Spike's Jazz Band.
Gray graduated from Roanoke High School. He is said to have joined the army at seventeen and two years later he was living at home with his family. He was employed as a bill clerk for the railroad. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University but left to work for the Santa Fe Railroad.
In 1927, his Orange Blossoms Band was renamed the Casa Loma Orchestra, after Casa Loma in Toronto, where the band played for eight months. Gray collaborated with the jazz musician Jean Goldkette and with trumpeter/arranger Salvador Camarata.

Casa Loma
Casa Loma (Spanish for Hill House) is a Gothic Revival style house and gardens in midtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that is now a museum and landmark. It was originally a residence for financier Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. Casa Loma was constructed from 1911 to 1914. The architect was E. J. Lennox, who several other city landmarks. Casa Loma sits at an altitude of 140 m.
History
In 1903, financier Henry Pellatt purchased 25 lots from developers Kertland and Rolf. Pellatt commissioned architect E. J. Lennox to design Casa Loma with construction beginning in 1911, starting with the massive stables, potting shed and Hunting Lodge (a.k.a. coach-house) a few hundred feet north of the main building. The Hunting Lodge is a two-storey 4,380-square-foot (407 m2) house with servants' quarters. As soon as the stable complex was completed, Sir Henry sold his summer house in Scarborough to his son and moved to the Hunting Lodge. The stables were used as a construction site for the castle (and also served as the quarters for the male servants), with some of the machinery still remaining in the rooms under the stables.

HIDDEN ERROR: Usage of "theme song" is not recognized
The Casa Loma Orchestra was a popular American dance band active from 1927 to 1963. From 1929 until the rapid multiplication in the number of swing bands from 1935 on, the Casa Loma Orchestra was one of the top North American dance bands. With the decline of the big band business following the end of World War II, it disbanded in 1947. However, from 1957 to 1963, it re-emerged as a recording session band in Hollywood, made up of top-flight studio musicians under the direction of its most notable leader of the past, Glen Gray. The reconstituted band made a limited number appearances live and on television and recorded fifteen LP albums for Capitol Records before Gray died in 1963.
History
The future members of the band first came together in 1927 as the Orange Blossoms, one of several Detroit-area groups that came out of the Jean Goldkette office. The band had adopted the Casa Loma name by the time of its first recordings in 1929, shortly after it played an eight-month engagement at Casa Loma Hotel in Toronto. The band never actually played the Casa Loma under that name, still appearing as the Orange Blossoms at that time.

Glen Gray
Glen Gray (June 7, 1906 – August 23, 1963) was an American jazz saxophonist and leader of the Casa Loma Orchestra.
Biography
Gray was born to Lurdie P. and Agnes (Gray) Knoblauch in Roanoke, Illinois. His father was a lifelong railroad worker who died when Glen was two years of age. His widowed mother married George H. DeWilde.
Gray graduated from Roanoke High School. He is said to have joined the Army at seventeen, and two years later he was living at home with his family. He was employed as a bill clerk for the railroad. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University, where he joined Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, but left to work for the Santa Fe Railroad.
In 1927, his Orange Blossoms Band was renamed the Casa Loma Orchestra, after Casa Loma in Toronto, where the band played for eight months. Gray collaborated with the jazz musician Jean Goldkette, and with trumpeter/arranger Salvador Camarata. He gave Betty George her first job as a soloist. Ill health forced Gray to retire from touring in 1950. In 1956, he went back into the studio to record the first of what became a series of LPs for Capitol Records, which recreated the sounds of the big band era in stereo. Gray died of cancer in 1963.

This tune, the radio theme song for the Casa Loma Orchestra, is one of the smoothest and most beautiful ballads recorded during the Big Band era. With this arrangement, which juxtaposes Billy Rauch's upper register trombone over a full clarinet section playing in the lower register, the Casa Loma Orchestra approaches the sublety of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Clarinet solo is by Clarence Hutchenrider. It is said that Billy Rauch practiced his trombone solo for half an hour before each broadcast, so he would continue to play it perfectly. Many other bands "covered" this tune, but none featured a copy of Rauch's solo. From the original 78 rpm record. Gray was born Metamora, Illinois. When he was 13 years old, Gray organized a group known as Spike's Jazz Band.
Gray graduated from Roanoke High School. He is said to have joined the army at seventeen and two years later he was living at home with his family. He was employed as a bill clerk for the railroad. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University but left to work for the Santa Fe Railroad.
In 1927, his Orange Blossoms Band was renamed the Casa Loma Orchestra, after Casa Loma in Toronto, where the band played for eight months. Gray collaborated with the jazz musician Jean Goldkette and with trumpeter/arranger Salvador Camarata.

Among others, Casa Loma was location for movies like The Pacifier, X Men, Chicago or The Tuxedo.
