Big Cypress National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located in southern Florida, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of Miami. The 720,000-acre (2,900 km2) Big Cypress, along with Big Thicket National Preserve in Texas, became the first national preserves in the United States National Park System when they were established on 11 October 1974. In 2008, Florida film producer Elam Stoltzfus featured this preserve in a PBS documentary.
Big Cypress borders the wet freshwater prairies of Everglades National Park to the south, and other state and federally protected cypress country in the west, with water from the Big Cypress flowing south and west into the coastal Ten Thousand Islands region of Everglades National Park. When Everglades National Park was established in 1947, Big Cypress was originally intended to be included; however, because the land had not been purchased from its private owners, Big Cypress was ultimately released from the park system.
National Preserve is a type of National Park Service protected area designated by the United States Congress that has characteristics normally associated with U.S. National Parks but where certain natural resource-extractive activities such as fishing, hunting, mining, and oil/gas exploration and extraction are permitted. The types of activities permitted in each national preserve varies depending on the enabling legislation of the unit.
The first national preserve in the U.S. was Big Thicket National Preserve in Texas, followed soon after by Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida, both established in 1974.
National preserves in Alaska were created by a provision of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980, allowing only regulated hunting, fishing and trapping for sport and subsistence purposes.
Cypress is the name applied to many plants in the cypress family Cupressaceae, which is a conifer of northern temperate regions. Most cypress species are trees, while a few are shrubs.
Cupressus sempervirens is famous for its longevity, and has been a popular garden plant for thousands of years.
The word cypress is derived from Old French cipres, which was imported from Latin cypressus the latinisation of the Greek κυπάρισσος (kyparissos).
The Cupressaceae family also contains 13–16 other genera (not listed above) that do not bear cypress in their common names.
Big means large or of great size.

Part 1 of 4 - Featuring the Big Cypress National Preserve and surrounding public and managed lands, producer/director Elam Stoltzfus was joined with many of the public land managers, local experts, hunters, orchid lovers, artists and many great people for this film. The expedition across the swamp in airboats, hiking, mucking about, aerial views, canoes and swamp buggies gave the HD video crew ample opportunities to capture breathtaking images. It is a collection of stories on how the Big Cypress Swamp preservation almost didn't happen, how the lands are currently being managed, an overview of animal behaviors, stunning landscape scenes and a cacophony of sounds blended into a musical score. We are staying at Monument Lake which is one of the few places this time of the year with any site available. We’re visiting in February at the peak of snowbird season. I use Everglades and Big Cypress interchangeably because they are very similar ecosystems. Big Cypress my favorite of the two areas is, as the name suggests a lot more wooded. The first activity we attempt is to walk a short section of the Florida trail. In South Florida, besides a...

Capt Jim and Capt Shane tried to fish the Big Cypress in a 21 foot Stratos only to be denied access due to low water levels. The run back was hairy! http://www.floridaevergladesbassfishingadventures.com (charter information)
Day 1 of a four day trip during the Florida Trail Kickoff. Roberts Lake trail runs from Loop Road to Oasis Ranger Station on US41. It is an extremely beautiful trail with the highlight being Roberts Lake Strand. This was a very dry year and the water can get much deeper.
The Title says it all. Went on a hike off the beaten trail into the Big Cypress swamp. Stopped at the "Offical Skunk Ape headquarters" to inquire if there have been an recent signings. This is my second attempt in the same area. First being thwarted by flooding and mosquitoes. We looked got Skunk Ape, water moccasin, coral snake, eastern diamond back rattlesnake, Florida panther, black bear and anything else. Found water moccasin but not the skunk ape!

In southern Florida there is a unique world of water, swampland and dense jungle-like forest: the Everglades, a truly magical environment full of mystery, myth and fascinating nature. For many centuries this huge swamp area was inhabited by the Seminole Indians and today the Everglades are one of the greatest natural attractions in the U.S.A. Unlike the somewhat daunting appearance of the alligator the surroundings here are far more benign. The pink flamingo has for many years been associated with Florida and everywhere the croaking of frogs fills the air. There is a huge variety of birdlife as the vast areas of swampland are an ideal habitat and the water is not only rich in fish, various predators can also be found in large numbers. A total of six hundred species of fish live in the wat...
