Peggy Lee (born Norma Deloris Egstrom; May 26, 1920 – January 21, 2002) was an American jazz and popular music singer, songwriter, composer and actress, in a career spanning six decades. From her beginning as a vocalist on local radio to singing with Benny Goodman's big band, she forged a sophisticated persona, evolving into a multi-faceted artist and performer. She wrote music for films, acted, and created conceptual record albums—encompassing poetry, jazz, chamber pop, and art songs.
Peggy Lee was born as Norma Deloris Egstrom in Jamestown, North Dakota, the seventh of eight children of her expecting parents, Marvin Olof Egstrom, a station agent for the Midland Continental Railroad, and his wife Selma Amelia (Anderson) Egstrom, on Wednesday, May 26, 1920. She and her family were Lutherans. Her father was Swedish- American and her mother was Norwegian-American. Her mother died when Peggy was just a four year old toddler. Afterwards, her father married her step-mother Min Schaumber, who treated her with great cruelty while her alcoholic but loving father did little to stop it. Later, she developed her musical talent and took several part-time jobs so that she could be away from home to escape the abuse of her step-mother.
Peggy is most commonly a diminutive of the female given name Margaret. It is sometimes spelled Peggie.
Beyond this, Peggy may refer to:
Carolyn is a female given name, a variant of Caroline. Another spelling is Karolyn, Carolyne or Carolynne. Caroline itself is one of the feminine forms of Charles.
Milt Raskin (January 27, 1916 – October 16, 1977) was an American swing jazz pianist.
Born in Boston, Mass., Raskin played saxophone as a child before switching to piano at age 11. In the 1930s he attended the New England Conservatory of Music. He worked on local Boston-area radio before moving to New York City, where he played with Wingy Manone in 1937 at the "Famous Door" and Gene Krupa in 1938-39. He then played with Teddy Powell and Alvino Rey before joining Krupa again for a short time, then joined the orchestra of Tommy Dorsey from 1942 to 1944, replacing Joe Bushkin.
He moved to Los Angeles in 1944, where he occasionally worked in jazz (including on recordings by Artie Shaw, Billie Holiday, and Georgie Auld), but concentrated on work as a studio musician and musical director. Much of his studio work from the 1940s on was uncredited, and he never led his own jazz recording session.

This live 1954 kinescope is part of a live telecast from The Colgate Comedy Hour and features legendary singer Peggy Lee doing "Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me.
Peggy Lee's alluring tone, distinctive delivery, breadth of material, and ability to write many of her own songs made her one of the most captivating artists of the vocal era, from her breakthrough on the Benny Goodman hit "Why Don't You Do Right" to her many solo successes, singles including "Mañana," "Lover" and "Fever" that showed her bewitching vocal power, a balance between sultry swing and impeccable musicianship. Born Norma Egstrom in Jamestown, North Dakota, she suffered the death of her mother at the age of four and endured a difficult stepmother after her father remarried. Given her sense of swing by listening to Count Basie on the radio, she taught herself to sing and made her radio debut at the age of 14. She made the jump to Fargo (where she was christened Peggy Lee), then to...

I just found these two songs on an old betamax tape I recorded back in 1985! I saw her on this tour and she was amazing. She invited the audience to ask her questions. A very personable and classy lady. I asked her if the almost floor length string of pearls she was wearing were real - she said "No honey, but I have some just as long back home that are!"

Directed by Steve Lippman aka FLIP. Bette Midler's brilliant live in-studio performance of the Leiber & Stoller/Peggy Lee classic "Is That All There Is?" This is an excerpt from a short video program I directed for the album "Bette Midler Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook" (Sony/Columbia Records) featuring intimate after-hours in-studio performances by Ms. Midler. This performance is an alternate take, different from the album version, done exclusively for the camera. We shot this at the legendary Capitol Records, Studio A, where the spirits of Miss Lee, and so many other greats, could be felt that day. This was 3rd and final take. The story is told, the tears are real -- time suspended in front and behind the lens. www.bettemidler.com www.stevelippman.com

Directed by Steve Lippman aka FLIP. "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" is an excerpt from a short program I directed for the album "Bette Midler Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook" on Sony/Columbia Records. The full-length piece features great after-hours in-studio performances by Ms. Midler, but this particular sequence was created solely from 8mm home movies of Miss Peggy Lee and her family, as scored by Ms. Midler's beautiful interpretation of a song known to be Miss Lee's favorite. The images were edited from hours of incredible material, supplied graciously by Holly Foster-Wells, Miss Lee's granddaughter and the head of the estate. Going through this material was like travelling through a time-tunnel - a private glimpse into a different world and era, and showing Peggy Lee the wife, the roman...

In 1953 Toots moved to New York City where he became a member of Charlie Parker’s All Stars. But it was when he joined the legendary George Shearing Quintet where he played guitar and featured him to play some solos on harmonica. By this time, peoples perception of the harmonica was that of a kids toy and not taken seriously in music circles around the world. In fact, the only harmonica players that were making a dent musically were The Harmonicats and Larry Adler. By the mid-1950’s Toots was making a name for himself as a session guitarist backing and recording with the likes of Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee. He also befriended bandleader, arranger, and producer Quincy Jones, who continues to play and record for to this day. Quincy adds “I can say without hesitation that T...
