In this episode of Streets by Vice, we explore Austin’s rich and rather strange cultural history through the lens of one of its most iconic thoroughfares: 6th street. Sixth is significant in many ways; it was the breeding ground for its now renowned music scene, which when talking to experts across the city is at the core of virtually every other industry in Austin and inextricable from the city's identity. 6th street also spans east to west across the city, the urban planning for which has major implications on the city’s diverse demography. Finally, where sixth street runs through downtown, it sits adjacent to its tech epicenter which is currently booming on a national scale. If Austin has always had one foot firmly planted in music, the other has most certainly been in tech—since the 1950s Austin has been a notable location for the industry. The University of Texas at Austin has consistently pumped students through its engineering and computer science programs, and as a result it sits firmly at the forefront of the tech space. In contrast to a city like San Francisco, however, the money and development that has come along with the tech boom has not diminished its alternative, creative identity. Over past decades, the two worlds have managed to thrive alongside each other, often with intriguing overlap. And while the whitewashing and gentrification many Austinites take issue with may be true, what we are seeing now is an Austin that more than anything is simply growing up. Martin Shkreli is a 32-year-old entrepreneur and company builder. A modern day Horatio Alger story, Shkreli grew up the son of two janitors in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, hustled his way into the hedge fund game, and is now worth at least $45 million. Although he made his money betting against the pharmaceutical industry, Shkreli switched to running a drug company in 2012. In August of last year, one of his companies acquired the rights to a drug that treats an infection that effects in people with AIDS and other immunodeficiencies. Over night, the price per pill rose by more than 5000 percent and Shkreli became the poster child for capitalistic greed. Over the past year he's also funded an indie record label, claimed he would bail Bobby Shmurda out of jail, and purchased the singular copy of a legendary Wu-Tang Clan album … with no immediate plans to even play it. In December, Shkreli was indicted on securities fraud charges and is now under investigation by Congress and the Federal Trade Commission for price gouging… so his time in the spotlight is not over yet. VICE News filmmaker Medyan Dairieh gains exclusive access to the Syrian branch of al Qaeda, al Nusra, a jihadist group fighting against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and the Islamic State (IS). Spending more than a month with al Nusra and exploring their expanding territory, Dairieh meets the highest-ranking members of the organization, who reveal their identity on screen for the first time and discuss their military doctrine. Al Nusra, which swore allegiance to al Qaeda two years ago and is now emerging as a powerful force to rival IS in Syria, has seized several strategic towns in the northwestern province of Idlib. While it supplies water, electricity, and food to the local population, a school run by al Nusra is also grooming young boys to become the next generation of al Qaeda and preparing them for jihad. VICE News also secures exclusive access to the frontlines of the battle for Abu Al-Duhur airport in Idlib, a major airbase held by Assad’s forces, besieged by al Nusra for two years. Aided by dust storms during the attack, the airport was the last remaining government stronghold in the region. Dozens of government soldiers were subsequently executed, according to the monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
