Babul

Babul (बाबुल pronounced baabul) (Urdu: بابل ‎) is an old Urdu-Hindi term for father indicating a daughter's affection. The term is now mainly used in Bollywood songs in the context of a newly married daughter leaving her father's home.

In parts of northern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the conclusion of a daughter's marriage, marked by the bidaai (farewell) ceremony, is a profoundly sad occasion, because after this she leaves her father's house and permanently relocates to her husband's family. The moment thus marks the end of her past life and the beginning of a new one. The expression of this sentiment varies, but is usually in the formed of hushed sobs, while maintaining sober calmness and composure. This sentiment is often reflected (and exaggerated) in Bollywood and regional films.

Famous examples

Wajid Ali Shah (1822–1887), the last nawab of Awadh, wrote a popular bhairavi thumri "Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye", where he likens bidai to death, and his own banishment for his beloved Lucknow (video search for Saigal's 1938 rendition):

Babul Supriyo

Babul Supriya Baral, or Babul Supriyo, (born 15 December 1970) is an Indian playback singer, actor and politician. Currently he is a Minister of State for Urban Development, and for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, under the Government of India. He made a career as singer in Hindi cinema, and contributed to more than 70 films. He has also done playback singing in other Indian films including Bengali and Odia.

He joined politics in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and joined Narendra Modi's government.

Early life

Babul Supriyo was born and bred in Uttarpara, a small town on the banks of the Hooghly River in West Bengal. His parents are Sunil Chandra Baral and Sumitra Baral. He comes from a musical family and was greatly influenced by his grandfather, Banikantha NC Baral, a Bengali vocalist and composer. He won several inter-school and inter-college music compositions, and had performed in All India Radio and Doordarshan. He attended Don Bosco Bandel school during which he became an "All India Don Bosco Music Champion" in 1983, and "The Most Enriching Talent" in 1985. He completed his bachelor's degree in commerce from Calcutta University in 1991.

Anupam Roy (Bengali: অনুপম রায়; born 29 March 1982) is an Indian lyricist, music composer, singer from Kolkata, West Bengal. He is best known for his song Amake amar moto thakte dao (আমাকে আমার মত থাকতে দাও), which appeared on the soundtrack to the 2010 film Autograph. He recently won the 61st Filmfare Awards 2016 for Best Background Score for ‘Piku’

Music

Roy has been writing songs from his childhood. His biggest break was having two of his songs featured in the Bengali film, Autograph (2010) by Srijit Mukherji. Roy wrote and composed Bneche Thakaar Gaan (বেঁচে থাকার গান), sung by Rupam Islam and Amake Amar Moto Thakte Dao (আমাকে আমার মত থাকতে দাও), which he sang himself. Roy subsequently debuted as music director for the Bengali movie "Chalo Paltai" (2011). In the same year movies like Baishe Srabon, Rang Milanti released where he continued his work as a music director, lyricist and vocalist. In 2012, Hemlock Society released where he worked as a music director/lyricist/vocalist. Songs like "Ekhon Anek Raat" & "Amar Mawte" catapulted his success to another level. 2014, marked the release of 4 films where he worked as a music director. Songs from Highway and Chotushkone did remarkably well on music charts. "Boba Tunnel" and "Bawshonto Eshe Gechhe" were super hit numbers.

Satyaki Banerjee

Satyaki Banerjee (Bengali: সাত্যকি ব্যানার্জি ;lang-hi) is an Indian Bengali composer. He is a part of an Anglo-Bengali band with members in Kolkata and London. He plays instruments like Dotara and sarod give his performance on both classical and folk. He studied the sarod with the late Pandit Dipak Chowdhury and now trains under Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar. He picked up the dotara in the company of practising folk musicians, in akhras and melas and in him the classical and folk meld to evolve into a unique style of playing. He is also a self-taught oud and rebab player, besides being a magnificent singer of mostly Bengali mystical poetry, in the baul and kirtan traditions.

Satyaki is a historian by training and takes serious academic interest in the music he practices. He studied from Julien Day School, Kolkata, Elgin Road branch.

Music life

Satyaki has been part of Parapar since 2005, but he has also performed independently with Mousumi Bhowmik in concerts at home and abroad, including in New York, London, Leeds, Dhaka and Chittagong.
