Living Amid Graves & Bones: The Philippines' Cemetery Slums
Like many of its Asian neighbors, the Philippines has been site of rapid economic growth over the past two decades. Following a period of martial law and strict control over rural provinces, peasants and farmers began moving to the nation's capital, Manila, in the 1980s looking for better lives. However, many of these people remained on the margins of both society and the city itself. As the popul

As the population boomed, slums began cropping up.
VICE Japan traveled to Manila in order to investigate conditions in one such slum inside Navotas Cemetery, where 6,000 men, women, and children currently live amid the graves and excavated human bones.

About one billion people live in slums and the highest concentration of them can be found in Asia.
As part of our Urban Planet series we travelled to the Philippines where about 20 million people live in slums.
One tenth of slum dwellers live in the capital Manila, in neighbourhoods like this one in the Tondo District.
Tondo is one of the oldest areas of Manila, and dates back about 1,000 years.
But the past has been erased by the present. Today it's one of the most densely populated places on earth. There are 80,000 people per square kilometre.
The United Nations says many of them lack adequate water, housing, sanitation, education, health and employment.
Chairman Tom was born and brought up in Tondo, and runs a community of about 4,000 slum dwellers there.
He has six children, and according to Tom "everyday is a struggle".
He sells water for a living and he also makes US$40 a month from renting out property that he built on government land.
"What I did is illegal," says Chairman Tom. "But I have to help my people because 90% of them are much worse off than me".
Jemma, a single mother, lives alongside the bridge in Tondo.
She and her four children live in a tiny room with no water, no electricity and no sanitation.
Jemma washes clothes to make a living. None of her children go to school and her 14-year-old daughter is already working.
"I sometimes get angry with myself because I cannot provide for my children," says Jemma, who starts to weep.
Estella and her husband Cricencio are an elderly couple who moved to Tondo slum from the countryside 20 years ago.
They have seven children and they live at the end of an alleyway.
"I have spent many sleepless nights worrying about the threat of fires," says Estella.
Her husband Cricencio has another major worry. "The land that we live on is owned privately. We have no contract, no rights, nothing," he laments.
Alicia's house is a two minute walk from Estella and Cricencio's, and she is one of the lucky few who was given rights to her land by the government who once owned it.
"I have the deeds," beams Alicia, a single mother with two children. But her smile fades as she reflects on the reality of living in the slum.
"I live about 20 metres from the river," says Alicia. Every year when the typhoons come, my house gets flooded, and sometimes I am knee deep in water.
The river which runs through Tondo is a great source of entertainment for the many young people who live in the slum.
Children spend hours swimming in it, but parts of it are choked with garbage. Some of the slum dwellers, like Estella, admit that they throw throw excrement in, because they have no toilet.
The river is so polluted that the United Nations says it poses a serious risk to health.
A woman is fast asleep on a table in the alleyway underneath the bridge.
She is oblivious to the constant sound of children at play or doing house work.
The government has admitted that the population is growing at an alarming rate and the United Nations says the Philippines has one of the highest rates of population growth in the region.
The average family size is six.
Chairman Tom says some things have improved.
There are health clinics and this year electricity was brought in. Unlike the Mayor, Tom believes in family planning.
"That's why we have programmes here," he says.
As a group of children play outside Chairman Tom's house, he admits that the number of kids is a problem.
But this is just one of a number of worrying trends in Manila. Chairman Tom instances lack of employment and the ownership of the land.
Despite the obstacles he remains upbeat. "This is what God has given me," says Chairman Tom. "And this is my home."

“There are broken-down cars and bits of discarded furniture everywhere,” Simpson wrote in the article posted on the BBC website.
“Beyond the wooden shacks lie ditches and pools of dirty, stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Two basic toilets serve the whole camp.”
Then he paraphrased comments made to him by his guide, Ernst Roets, the deputy chief executive of the Afrikaans civil society organisation, AfriForum.
“According to Roets there are 80 white squatter camps – many of them bigger than this – in the Pretoria area alone. Across South Africa as a whole he believes there could be as many as 400,000 poor whites in conditions like these.”
In the television report on the story, which was aired on the BBC current affairs programme, The Editors, Simpson spoke of 200,000 whites. “One ugly secret in the new South Africa is white poverty,” he said in a voiceover as a camera followed him picking his way through the shacks. “At least 200,000 whites live in squatter camps like this today.”

Poverty tourism is a small but growing sector of the the tourism industry wherein primarily wealthy western tourists visit the poorest places on earth, most of which are in the developing world. Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Nairobi and Johannesburg are perhaps the most popular locations for these trips, but a new tour was recently setup in Manila, the Filipino capital well-known for chaos, congestion and inequality.
Manila isn't the poorest city on earth but it is the most densely populated with about half of it's residents living in slums. One of the most remarkable is Smokey Mountain, a community literally situated on a garbage dump.
This is where Smokey Tours, a local nonprofit, offers to take tourists for a small fee.
Not surprisingly, poverty tourism is controversial. Critics have labeled these tours degrading. While supporters contend that they promote social awareness and help the local economy.
We wanted to find out for ourselves if Slum tourism really did distill poverty into entertainment or if there was more to it.

It was a bright afternoon, but the passageway was as dark as night. You could hardly see the steps on the stairs. There on the second floor is the narrow doorway to the dormitory. Step into it and you are met with a room packed with 20 double-decker beds, stacked so tightly together there is hardly room to even walk or move around. The absence of storage space, such as cupboards or shelves, means possessions are strewn anywhere and everywhere. Laundry is aired or dried inside the dormitory as well, given that there is also a lack of space outdoors for drying. The windows line one side of the wall but they hardly provide adequate ventilation. The room smells of stale air.
There are 40 migrant workers in this one room.

Unheard - Being A Teenage Mother In The Slums Of Thika HD - Documentary Films
The Life of a teenage mother in the slums of thika.
Teenage pregnancy is pregnancy in human females under the age of 20 at the time that the pregnancy ends. A pregnancy can take place after the start of the puberty before first menstrual period, but usually occurs after the onset of periods. In well-nourished girls, menarche usually takes place around the age of 12 or 13.
Pregnant teenagers face many of the same obstetrics issues as other women. There are, however, additional medical concerns for mothers aged under 15. For mothers aged 15–19, risks are associated more with socioeconomic factors than with the biological effects of age. Risks of low birth weight, premature labor, anemia, and pre-eclampsia are connected to the biological age itself, as it was observed in teen births even after controlling for other risk factors (such as utilization of antenatal care etc.).
In developed countries, teenage pregnancies are often associated with social issues, including lower educational levels, higher rates of poverty, and other poorer life outcomes in children of teenage mothers. Teenage pregnancy in developed countries is usually outside of marriage, and carries a social stigma in many communities and cultures. By contrast, teenage parents in developing countries are often married, and their pregnancies welcomed by family and society. However, in these societies, early pregnancy may combine with malnutrition and poor health care to cause medical problems.

I like to call it an "informal settlement" of the most beautiful people on the planet, both inside and out, where most seem to love (or at least be very happy with) their own looks, regardless of size or shape. ... BUT MANY NEED HELP! View photos and videos: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/wrdvmsp85egrfko/AABD7x11-heEdrR4QSmSH_0la
I think this link, with photos and videos, is definitely worth a look - especially the last video:

Want to see the most beautiful on the planet? Watch, then come join together with the poorest on the planet and for one of the biggest slums in the world. It's shown here... & rated S / R ~ Shocking / Required viewing! Beware of the ending -- it's not for those with week stomachs! Some say I'm active with "poverty alleviation" - I simply want to do what feels right, rather than "sit on the sofa." I welcome you to join& be a part of the developments, and provide comments & contacts on my www.Facebook.com/wattssean People I met are hard-working, friendly, smart, sexy, & beautiful, inside and out. Kenyans' acceptance of beauty is the best I've seen, & I've worked with 128 countries. This video shows some of the hardships. Beware, it's rated "S& R" for Shocking & Required! Many in Kenya however, despite many of the expensive living conditions and abundance of luxuries (from fresh air, to some of the best & most beautifully populated bars on the planet, to the jet-setting wild-life resorts), I estimate about 2,500,000 are living on less than $1.25 daily. Most residents surveyed say they never saw government employees, nor the promised electricity, water, waste management, educational, or health facilities in the "informal settlements," or as others term, slums. I'm doing more than I can easily manage, have plans to develop projects from small to global scale, and would appreciate help with donations, hands-on activities, & funding. ** Send what you can to "THE REAL MR. I may be slowly killing myself with overwork - but the people I'm working with are so beautiful, friendly, smart, hard-working, and in need, that I can't stop. And YES, there is need in China, Myanmar, Vietnam, throughout SE Asia, back home in Canada, at http://compass-point.ca/shorthistoryofellis/ - as is there in USA at http://www.slate.com/.../brenda_ann_kenneally_documents... and many other areas. The details are more shocking in person than on paper, or video. Please forgive my video, especially my light hearted jokes as I attempt to raise spirits rather than add to any depression. Please contact us and arrange to give generously, or better yet, go visit, see for yourself, and bring materials to donate; they need school books, computers, internet equipment, toys, sporting equipment and clothes, regular clothes, medicines, health care, education, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, buildings, and of course money.
