Hurricane Gloria was the first significant system to strike the northeastern United States since Hurricane Agnes in 1972 and the first major storm to affect New York and Long Island directly since Hurricane Donna in 1960. It was a powerful Cape Verde-type hurricane that formed during the 1985 Atlantic hurricane season, originating from a tropical wave on September 16 in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. After remaining a weak tropical cyclone for several days, Gloria intensified into a hurricane on September 22 north of the Lesser Antilles. During that time, the storm had moved generally westward, although it turned to the northwest due to a weakening of the ridge. Gloria quickly intensified on September 24, and the next day reached peak winds of 145 mph (230 km/h). The hurricane weakened before striking the Outer Banks of North Carolina on September 27. Later that day, Gloria made two subsequent landfalls on Long Island and later western Connecticut, before becoming extratropical on September 28 over New England. The remnants moved through Atlantic Canada, eventually dissipating on October 2.

Long Island is an island located just off the northeast coast of the United States and a region within the U.S. state of New York. Stretching east-northeast from New York Harbor into the Atlantic Ocean, the island comprises four counties: Kings and Queens (these form the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, respectively) to the west; then Nassau and Suffolk to the east. However, many people in the New York metropolitan area (even those living in Queens and Brooklyn) colloquially use the term "Long Island" (or "The Island") exclusively to refer to the Nassau-Suffolk county area collectively, which is mainly suburban in character. North of the island is Long Island Sound, across from which lie the states of Connecticut and a small part of Rhode Island.
With a Census-estimated population of 7,804,968 in 2014, constituting nearly 40% of New York State's population, Long Island is the most populated island in any U.S. state or territory, and the 18th-most populous island in the world (ahead of Ireland, Jamaica, and Hokkaidō). Its population density is 5,571 inhabitants per square mile (2,151/km2). If Long Island geographically constituted an independent metropolitan statistical area, it would rank fourth most populous in the United States; while if it were a U.S. state, Long Island would rank 13th in population and first in population density.
North Carolina (i/ˌnɔːrθ kærəˈlaɪnə/) is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. The state borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. North Carolina is the 28th most extensive and the 9th most populous of the 50 United States. North Carolina is known as the Tar Heel State and the Old North State.
North Carolina is composed of 100 counties. Its two largest metropolitan areas are among the top ten fastest-growing in the country: its capital, Raleigh, and its largest city, Charlotte. In the past five decades, North Carolina's economy has undergone a transition from reliance upon tobacco, textiles, and furniture-making to a more diversified economy with engineering, energy, biotechnology, and finance sectors.
North Carolina has a wide range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet (2,037 m) at Mount Mitchell, the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River. The climate of the coastal plains is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the state falls in the humid subtropical climate zone. More than 300 miles (500 km) from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a subtropical highland climate.
Gloria may refer to:
A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as hurricane (/ˈhʌrᵻkən/ or /ˈhʌrᵻkeɪn/), typhoon /taɪˈfuːn/, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone.
Tropical cyclones typically form over large bodies of relatively warm water. They derive their energy through the evaporation of water from the ocean surface, which ultimately recondenses into clouds and rain when moist air rises and cools to saturation. This energy source differs from that of mid-latitude cyclonic storms, such as nor'easters and European windstorms, which are fueled primarily by horizontal temperature contrasts. The strong rotating winds of a tropical cyclone are a result of the conservation of angular momentum imparted by the Earth's rotation as air flows inwards toward the axis of rotation. As a result, they rarely form within 5° of the equator. Tropical cyclones are typically between 100 and 2,000 km (62 and 1,243 mi) in diameter.
PART 1 Hurricane Gloria hit Long Island, New York on September 27th 1985 at approximately 9am. This was the last Hurricane to directly hit our area, it is now 2007 and 22 years since Gloria, we are long overdue for another like this or greater. This i recorded back in 1985 from the Weather Channel not only the Hurricane hitting Long Island, but broadcasts from weeks before when Glori was nothing but a mass of Thundershowers moving off the African Coast, to the Bildup to a Catergory 5 in the Carribean, to Tropical Storm Henri that hit Long Island 2 days prior to Gloria, to The uncertain landfall of Gloria, to the power going out on my VCR as i lost electricity with the Hurricane over Islip. The total clip is 40 minutes, i had to break this up into 5 parts to fit, this is part #1.. This...
Some TV news footage coupled with my home video from an early VHS camcorder tells my story of the storm and its aftermath in Connecticut.
This seemed appropriate, so here's the 11pm Eyewitness News from September 26, 1985, the eve of Hurricane Gloria. Ernie Anastos and Kaity Tong anchor, Dr. Bill Gutsch handles the forecast, and much of the great early/mid 80s Eyewitness News team - including Josh Howell, Lou Young, Gloria Rojas, and Will Spens, and a pre-Fox Carol Iovanna - are in the field. Corey MacPherrin runs down some sports highlights for variety. It's a great reminder of how much has changed regarding weather coverage - and how much hasn't. You'd just need to swap out the radars for the more current model and it'd be quite similar.
This is the Action News 11pm broadcast on the eve of Hurricane Gloria. This was supposed to be one of the biggest hurricanes to ever hit the Philadelphia area. It was pretty bad (especially for those around the Jersey Shore), but not the monster that was being predicted during this broadcast. With Jim Garner, Cathy Gandolfo, Phyllis Burke, Vernon Odom, Harry Martin, Dave Roberts, and Eliott Rodriguez.
This is a 90 second video of the news story regarding the approach of Hurricane Gloria to the New York area in 1985. I'd have more but we lost power for days after it hit.
I recorded the storm with my camcorder with some help from Timmy. Also, the only thing I just added to this video was a part of one song by Albert Castiglia called Hurricane Blues.
The 6 Friends shoot confessions one after another at Mr & Mr Geller during Season 6's Thanksgiving episode.
From September 26th through the 28th, 1985, large and powerful Hurricane Gloria impacted the east coast of the United States from North Carolina northward through New England. Prior to landfall, Hurricane Gloria reached its peak intensity, east of the Bahamas, on the afternoon of September 25th. With maximum sustained winds of 145mph and a minimum central pressure of 919mb (27.14in), at this time, Gloria was a strong category four. After this, the hurricane gradually weakend as it accelerated northward. On the early morning of the 27th, Gloria made its first landfall over eastern North Carolina with maximum sustained winds of 105mph and gusts to near 125mph. Diamond Shoals lighthouse recorded sustained winds of 98mph with gusts to 120mph. Between 1am - 2am, the eye of Gloria moved di...
Yeiyeah!
We're sickeningly pretty and unpleasantly vain
Something to really drive you insane
We're voluntarely obsessed with the play
So c'mon now, sing with the tempest & rock like a
hurricane
I love to see you high 'cause of me
I drop you down to put you back on the peak
You're face to face with pride and you reap what you sow
Don't you see what you deny, don't you see what you deny?
So afraid to be alone
There's a winner in me and I'm breaking the ground
I am technology, I'll be sticking around
There's a winner in me, the sun in a cloud
There's a killer in me!
Yeiyeah!
Do the shadows bother you when you're all alone?
Does your mind play games with you or is it me after all?
No time for hesitation, are you ready to fall?
No time for useless patience, so how about some rock'nâ
€™roll?!
So afraid to be alone
