William Desmond Anthony "Bill" Pertwee, MBE (21 July 1926 – 27 May 2013) was an English comedy actor best known for playing the part of antagonist ARP Warden Hodges in the popular sitcom Dad's Army.
Pertwee was born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. His mother was Brazilian and his English father, James Francis Carter Pertwee, travelled the country as a salesman until he became ill and died in 1938, when Bill Pertwee was 12. The family moved home many times during Pertwee's childhood and he lived in Hereford, Glasbury, Colnbrook, Newbury, Erith, Belvedere, Blackheath, Storrington, Westcliff-on-Sea, Wilmington and Worthing. His education was disrupted by the moves and he attended many schools including an independent convent school, a small independent school, followed by Frensham Heights School in Surrey, Dartford Technical College and Southend College.
Pertwee's brother James Raymond "Jiggy" Pertwee was an RAF Whitley Bomber pilot who was killed in a crash on a hillside close to a disused quarry above Bank Foot, Ingleby Greenhow, following a leaflet drop over Dortmund, Germany, in June 1941.
Dad's Army is a BBC television sitcom about the British Home Guard during the Second World War. It was written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft and broadcast on the BBC from 1968 to 1977. The sitcom ran for 9 series and 80 episodes in total, plus a radio version based on the television scripts, a feature film and a stage show. The series regularly gained audiences of 18 million viewers and is still repeated worldwide.
The Home Guard consisted of local volunteers otherwise ineligible for military service, either because of age (hence the nickname "Dad's Army") or by being in professions exempt from conscription. Dad's Army deals almost exclusively with over age men, and featured older British actors, including Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, Arnold Ridley and John Laurie. Younger members in the cast included Ian Lavender, Clive Dunn (who played the oldest guardsman, Lance Corporal Jones), Frank Williams, James Beck (who died suddenly during production of the programme's sixth series in 1973), and air raid warden Bill Pertwee.

James "Jimmy" Perry, OBE (born 9 September 1923) is an English writer, scriptwriter, and actor, best known for devising and co-writing the BBC sitcoms Dad's Army (1968–1977), It Ain't Half Hot Mum (1974–1981), Hi-De-Hi (1980–1988) and You Rang M'Lord? (1988–1993) with David Croft.
Perry was born in Barnes, London on 20 September 1923. His father, Arthur was an antiques dealer and he was educated at two independent schools: at Colet Court and St Paul's School, which at the time were both based in Hammersmith in West London (now in Barnes).
Perry is credited with the original idea for Dad's Army, which was based on his experiences in the Home Guard during World War II. He also collaborated with Croft on It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Hi-de-Hi! and You Rang, M'Lord?
Many of the sitcoms Perry co-wrote with Croft drew heavily on his personal experience: at 16 he joined the Watford Home Guard (Dad's Army); two years later he was called up into the full-time forces, and was sent to Burma with the Royal Artillery, where he joined the Royal Artillery Concert Party and reached the rank of sergeant. Demobbed and back in the UK, he trained as an actor at RADA, spending his holidays working as a Redcoat in Butlin's Holiday Camps.

Bill Pertwee, who played Warden Hodges in Dad's Army, has died, his agent has confirmed. The 86-year-old also starred as PC Wilson in You Rang M'Lord? He also appeared in three Carry On films. Arthur Lowe (Captain George Mainwaring), John Le Mesurier (Sergeant Arthur Wilson), Clive Dunn (Lance-Corporal Jack Jones), Ian Lavender (Private Frank Pike) and Bill Pertwee (ARP Warden William Hodges). The film is shot on Madeira Drive, Brighton, probably in 1974. Possibly at the finish of the London to Brighton Historic run.
Clive Dunn was an English actor, comedian, artist and author. He played Lance-Corporal Jones in the BBC sitcom Dad's Army. Here's an interview with him in 1995 about Tony Hancock. Dunn played small film roles from the 1930s onwards, appearing alongside Will Hay in the films Boys Will Be Boys (1935) while still a schoolboy, and Good Morning, Boys (1937). In 1939, he was stage manager for a touring production of The Unseen Menace, a detective story. This was not a success as the billed star of the show, Terence De Marney, did not appear on stage and his dialogue was supplied by a gramophone recording. In 1940, after the start of the Second World War, Dunn joined the army and served with the 4th Queen's Own Hussars.[ The unit fought during the German invasion of Greece but surrendered afte...

Those being very small
Have been heard to say
That being small's OK.
Those getting rather big
May come to find
They've left their space behind.
Hey, yeah, you
Living in the middle
Too afraid to come out
Hanging on to your pride
So uneasy.
All fall down, it makes no difference
God Almighty holds the balance here
Get out, get out, get out of here.
We collide, how formal,
Is that why we're here?
Those going all the way
Have been heard to say
That being here's OK.
[Repeat 3rd Verse]
All fall down, it makes no difference.
God Almighty, hold the balance here
Get out, get out, get out of here.
We collide, how formal.
And gain control,
