Ouverture 1812 (short version) - Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowski/arr. Ton van Grevenbroek
The 'Overture 1812' by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was composed to commemorate the victory of the Russian army over Napoleon’s army that year. The composition starts with a religious hymn played by the lower woodwinds; then there is a confrontation between the 'Marseillaise’ and the then Russian national anthem. The work is also famous because of the use of church bells and canons accompanying the Ts

Forty students from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance took a classical approach to the flashmob as they flashwaltzed Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers at the new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower in Jerusalem. Doctors, patients and passers-by joined in the fun.
The surprise concert was part of Good Deeds Day, an annual event that originated in Israel in 2007 and now takes place in over 50 countries worldwide. On this day volunteers reach out to the less fortunate and the vulnerable.
The Academy students enjoyed the day so much that they have decided to schedule regular concerts at the hospital. Hadassah Medical Organization treats over one million patients annually, without regard to race, religion or national origin.

Tchaikovsky, Pyotr Ilyich (1840-93) -composer
Vladimir Ashkenazy -piano
Score: http://javanese.imslp.info/files/imgl...
Each piece was given a subtitle and an accompanying verse. In the case of January the supplementary title was 'By the fireside' and the verse was from Pushkin. It is not entirely clear what input Tchaikovsky had in the choice of texts (he seems to have had a say in those for Nos 1 and 4), but the titles were certainly Bernard's, as the composer's letter of 24 November 1875 accepting the commission attests. Still, Bernard or Tchaikovsky, whichever it was, did match words to music-or music to words-with much sensitivity, and since the titles are already highly suggestive of his beloved Schumann, there is no reason to think that Tchaikovsky was in any way opposed to them. And while he may have expressed himself rather dismissively about the project as a whole, there is nothing in the music to suggest anything slapdash. Indeed he was evidently so fond of the middle section of January that he built Tatyana's letter scene around it while composing his operatic masterpiece Yevgeny Onegin in 1877.
The pieces themselves are perfectly matched to the market of amateurs who might not command massive techniques but who were prepared to persevere and whose sensitivities would identify readily with the moods of the music. Such a description matches Tchaikovsky's own pianistic accomplishments fairly precisely. He was a trained and competent pianist, numbering Anton Rubinstein among his teachers, but not an outstanding one.
The majority of the pieces are intimate. February is an example of the more extrovert exceptions. It bears the highly appropriate title of 'Carnival'-in Russian specifically Maslenitsa, the Shrovetide fair that also provides the setting for Stravinsky's Petrushka-and the music evokes bustling crowds, competitive attractions, and accordions on street-corners.
For March we are back to a more private expressive world. The score is headed 'The lark's song', and there are some suggestions of birdsong, which invite a pecking, staccato touch. April is subtitled 'The snowdrop' and comes with the tantalizing marking Allegretto con moto e un poco rubato. The next two pieces are also on the slow side. May evokes the joyfulness as well as the beauty of the 'White nights of May' in St Petersburg, and June-one of the most famous in the set-is entitled 'Barcarolle': somewhat curiously so, because it is only the undulating middle section that in any way evokes Venetian gondolas. July's 'Reaper's song' is another plein air tableau, contrasting communal, or at least outdoor, activity with the more inward tone of the previous four movements.
Tchaikovsky's technical demands move up a grade or two for the second half of the set. August follows July in placing a high premium on keyboard facility. This is a 'Harvest', nominally, but to the accompaniment of a Mendelssohnian scherzo, as though all concerned are anxious to bring in the corn before the arrival of September rains. Not the least of its challenges is to achieve a wide range of colour within a piano dynamic. September, 'The hunt', follows, accompanied by another verse from Pushkin, whose invitations to horn calls are gratefully taken up in the music. Opportunities for poetic reverie return in October, the 'Autumn song', where the doloroso marking is merely a confirmation of the sighs of disillusionment and the surges of hope that leap from the page. November, headed 'Troika' (the three-horsed Russian sleigh), is a movement Rachmaninov loved to play, and his scintillating, highly personal interpretation is one that has influenced many performers, especially Russians. Finally December, entitled 'Christmas', comes with a verse from Vasily Zhukovsky describing girls taking off their slippers at the gate, in line with a local fortune-telling tradition. For this Tchaikovsky composes one of his most unassuming, yet engaging, waltzes.

The March Slave in B-flat minor, Op. 31 (published as Slavonic March) or Serbo-Russian March is an orchestral composition by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
In June 1876, Serbia was at war with the Ottoman Empire. Russia openly supported Serbia. The Russian Musical Society commissioned an orchestral piece from Tchaikovsky for a concert in aid of the Red Cross Society, and ultimately for the benefit of wounded Serbian veterans. Many Russians sympathized with those they considered to be their fellow Slavs and Orthodox Christians and sent volunteer soldiers and aid to assist Serbia.
Tchaikovsky referred to the piece as his "Serbo-Russian March" while writing it. It was premiered in Moscow on November 17, 1876, conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein.

The work is also famous because of the use of church bells and canons accompanying the Tsar’s hymn in the finale.

The Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, Pathétique is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's final completed symphony, written between February and the end of August 1893. The composer led the first performance in Saint Petersburg on 16/28 October of that year, nine days before his death. The second performance, conducted by Eduard Nápravník, took place 21 days later, at a memorial concert on 6/18 November. It included some minor corrections that Tchaikovsky had made after the premiere, and was thus the first performance of the work in the exact form in which it is known today. The first performance in Moscow was on 4/16 December, conducted by Vasily Safonov.[4] It was the last of Tchaikovsky's compositions premiered in his lifetime; his last composition of all, the single-movement 3rd Piano Concerto, Op. 75, which was completed in October 1893, a short time before his death, received a posthumous premiere.
The symphony was written in a small house in Klin and completed by August 1893. Tchaikovsky left Klin on 19 October for the first performance in St. Petersburg, arriving "in excellent spirits." However, the composer began to feel apprehension over his symphony, when, at rehearsals, the orchestra players did not exhibit any great admiration for the new work. Nevertheless, the premiere was met with great appreciation. Tchaikovsky's brother Modest wrote, "There was applause and the composer was recalled, but with more enthusiasm than on previous occasions. There was not the mighty, overpowering impression made by the work when it was conducted by Eduard Nápravník, on November 18, 1893, and later, wherever it was played."
Tchaikovsky dedicated the Pathétique to his nephew, Vladimir "Bob" Davydov, whom he greatly admired.
The second theme of the first movement formed the basis of a popular song in the 1940s, "(This is) The Story of a Starry Night" (by Mann Curtis, Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston) which was popularized by Glenn Miller. This same theme is the music behind "Where," a 1959 hit for Tony Williams and the Platters as well as "In Time," by Steve Lawrence in 1961, and John O'Dreams by Bill Caddick. All four songs have completely different lyrics.
Excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Sixth can heard in a number of films, including Now, Voyager, the 1997 version of Anna Karenina, The Ruling Class, Minority Report, Sweet Bird of Youth, Soylent Green and The Aviator. It has also accompanied the cartoon The Ren & Stimpy Show, specifically the episode 'Son of Stimpy' where the eponymous cat walks out into a blizzard. In addition, Tchaikovsky's Sixth is featured in the sci-fi video game Destiny, during the mission The Last Warmind, in which the player must defend Rasputin, an old planetary defense system.
Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony has also been featured during the 2010 Winter Olympics closing ceremony, being danced by Russia's national ballet company.
Tchaikovsky's Sixth plays a major role in E. M. Forster's novel Maurice, where it serves as a veiled reference to homosexuality.

In this 1961 performance, fifty-seven year old Nathan Milstein (1904-1992) performs the Tchaikovsky violin concerto in D major, Op. 35. William Steinberg leads the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. I created this video from the LP shown above (4:12), issued in 1962 on the Angel label, serial number 35686.
So that there is no question in the mind of those as to the provenance of the recording to which they are listening, I rely principally on images of the LP (side 1, 4:12; side 2, 24:16) and LP jacket (front, 4:48; reverse, 29:06) in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these.

This series of four videos includes what I believe to be the best moments in the music from the Nutcracker ballet. Tchaikovsky handpicked his own selections of eight pieces from the score to be played at concerts, calling it the Nutcracker Suite. One of the most instantly recognizable tunes from music written originally for the ballet, the Theme from Swan Lake has enjoyed new heights of popularity in recent times, thanks to the award-winning film, Black Swan. Its poignant, melodic line thrills as it builds up to a climax.
On the guitar, the piece becomes more intimate, a portrait in music. Truly, on the classical guitar, the fragility of the central character, Odette, who turns into a swan under the spell of a sorcerer, comes to center stage.

Waltz of the Flowers - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (The nutcracker)
The "Waltz of the Flowers" (1892) is a piece of orchestral music from the second act of The Nutcracker, a ballet composed by Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky told his fellow musicians he was working on a "fantastic" ballet called The Nutcracker: "It's awfully fun to write a march for tin soldiers, a waltz of the flowers, etc." The waltz is also the last number in his Nutcracker Suite. The Year 1812, as the Overture was formally titled, was commissioned to commemorate the Russian defense of Moscow against Napoleon's army in the Battle of Borodino in 1812.Tthe piece was an immediate success, both in Russia and in the United States, where it was played in the inaugural concert of Carnegie Hall. The Overture begins with an Orthodox Russian hymn, followed by several martial and folk tunes, representing the struggle of the Russian people as they are overcome by the advancing French army. Cannon shots are heard amid strains of La Marsiellaise; the woodwinds evoke the winter storms that turn the tide of the battle; the French soldiers retreat during a long descending passage in unison, followed by a victorious chorus of church bells and the Russian anthem, God save the Tsar. In 1974, the 1812 Overture was featured in a Boston Pops Fourth of July Esplanade concert, with live cannons, real church-bells, and fireworks. The piece has since become an American Independence Day standard.

Swan Lake (Russian: Лебединое озеро, Lebedinoye ozero) ballet, op. 20, by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, composed 1875--1876. The scenario, initially in four acts, was fashioned from Russian folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Reisinger. The ballet received its première on March 4 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, billed as The Lake of the Swans.
Although it is presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stagings both choreographically and musically on the 1895 revival of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, first staged for the Imperial Ballet on January 15, 1895, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.

Romeo and Juliet is an orchestral work composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It is styled an Overture-Fantasy, and is based on Shakespeare's play of the same name. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, Romeo and Juliet does not have an opus number.
In 1880, ten years after his first reworking of the piece, Tchaikovsky rewrote the ending and gave the piece the sub-title "Overture-Fantasia". It was completed by September 10, 1880, but did not receive its premiere until May 1, 1886, in Tbilisi, Georgia (then part of the Russian Empire), under Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov.

The "Waltz of the Flowers" is very popular. It has been arranged for various instruments and for various combinations of instruments. Percy Grainger arranged the waltz for piano solo as Paraphrase on Tchaikovsky's Flower Waltz. Walt Disney animated the waltz for the movie Fantasia.

Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker Suite, Op 71a
The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, intended for concert performance. The Nutcracker Suite should not be mistaken for the complete ballet. The outline below represents the selection and sequence of the Nutcracker Suite culled by the composer.

The String Sextet in D minor "Souvenir de Florence", Op. 70, is a string sextet scored for 2 violins, 2 violas, and 2 cellos composed in the European summer of 1890 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky dedicated the work to the St. Petersburg Chamber Music Society in response to his becoming an Honorary Member. The work, in the traditional four-movement form, was titled "Souvenir de Florence" because the composer sketched one of the work's principal themes while visiting Florence, Italy, where he composed The Queen of Spades. The work was revised between December 1891 and January 1892, before being premiered in 1892.
1. Allegro con spirito (00:00)
2. Adagio cantabile e con moto (10:16)
3. Allegretto moderato (19:56)
4. Allegro con brio e vivace (26:11)
