Prabodh Chandra Dey (1st May 1919 - 24th October 2013) better known by his nickname Manna Dey, was a playback singer in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Assamese films. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007. Along with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh he was a part of Indian film playback music industry. He is rated as the best classical singer among all singers of Hindi film music, though he sang various types of songs from pop to folk. A collection of best Bengali Film Songs by Manna Dey. If one talks about Bengali Film Songs or Modern Bengali Songs the one name that pops out first is the Legendary Manna Dey. Prabodh Chandra Dey, known by his stage name Manna Dey, was an Indian playback singer. Manna Dey sang in many different languages but primarily he sang for Hindi Films or play backed for Bengali Film Songs. He debuted in the film Tamanna in 1942,the musical score was by Krishna Chandra Dey and Manna sang a duet named "Jago Aayee Usha Ponchi Boley Jago" with Suraiya which was an instant hit. Manna Dey went on to record more than 4000 songs from 1942 to 2013. He sang for first time songs composed by Sachin Dev Burman, Upar Gagan Vishal and Duniya Ke Logo in the 1950 movie Mashal, which became popular and from here his association with S.D.Burman began. Its lyrics were written by Kavi Pradeep. In 1952, Dey sang for a Bengali and a Marathi movie with the same name and storyline, Amar Bhupali. This established him as a leading playback singer in Bengali films and Marathi films as well by 1953. Manna Dey was one of the most versatile male playback singer of his era. Skilled in Indian Classical Music and other various formats, Manna Dey had an unparalleled reputation. Especially his signature style of singing and his vocal range was phenomenal.

Apart from doing playback for Bengali Films Manna Dey also sang and composed for many private albums especially in Bengali. This changed the course of Modern Bengali Songs. About Manna Dey :-
Prabodh Chandra Dey (born May 1, 1919), better known by his nickname Manna Dey (Bengali: মান্না দে Manna De), is one of the greatest playback singers of all time in Hindi films and other vernacular Indian films, especially Bengali.
Manna dey was born to Purna Chandra (father) and Mahamaya Dey (mother)on 1 May, 1919. Besides his parents, his youngest paternal uncle Sangeetacharya (meaning "Venerable Teacher of Music" in Sanskrit) K. C. Dey highly inspired and influenced him. Manna received his early education in a small pre-primary school named Indu Babur Pathshala. Thereafter he attended Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College, followed by Vidyasagar College where he received his graduate education. From his childhood, Manna showed a keen liking for wrestling and boxing, and excelled in both sports. He has a jovial personality and likes to play pranks on people once in a while.
His experimentation with western music has produced some unforgettable melodies. He has recorded more than 3500 songs.
On December 18, 1953, Manna Dey married Sulochana Kumaran from Kerala. They have two daughters: Shuroma, born on October 19, 1956, and Sumita, born on June 20, 1958.
Manna Dey currently lives in Bangalore in the township of Kalyannagar after spending more than fifty years in Bombay. He also maintains a Calcutta address. He still travels widely in the world to present musical programs.
Renowned singer, Mohammad Rafi, once said to reporters: "You listen to my songs. I listen only to Manna Dey's songs".[citation needed] According to musicians Sachin Dev Burman and Anil Biswas, Manna Dey could sing any song of Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh and Talat Mehmood.
Manna Dey has been honored with the titles Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

Prabodh Chandra Dey (1 May 1919 − 24 October 2013), known by his stage name Manna Dey, was an Indian playback singer. He debuted in the film Tamanna in 1942, by this song "Upar Gagan Bishal" and went on to record more than 4000 songs from 1942 to 2013. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007.
Dey sang in all the major regional Indian languages, though primarily in Hindi and Bengali. His peak period in Hindi playback singing was from 1953 to 1976.
Early life
Dey was born to Mahamaya and Purna Chandra Dey on 1 May 1919 in Kolkata. Besides his parents, his youngest paternal uncle, Sangeetacharya Krishna Chandra Dey highly inspired and influenced him. He received his early education in Indu Babur Pathshala, a small pre-primary school. He started doing stage shows in school since 1929. He attended Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College. He participated in sports events like wrestling and boxing in his college days, taking training from Gobar Guha. He graduated from Vidyasagar College.

Skilled in Indian Classical Music and other various formats, Manna Dey had an unparalleled reputation. Especially his signature style of singing and his vocal range was phenomenal. Besides his parents, his youngest paternal uncle Sangeetacharya (meaning "Venerable Teacher of Music" in Sanskrit) K. C. Dey highly inspired and influenced him. Manna received his early education in a small pre-primary school named Indu Babur Pathshala. Thereafter he attended Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College, followed by Vidyasagar College where he received his graduate education. From his childhood, Manna showed a keen liking for wrestling and boxing, and excelled in both sports. He has a jovial personality and likes to play pranks on people once in a while. His experimentation with western music has produced some unforgettable melodies. He has recorded more than 3500 songs. On December 18, 1953, Manna Dey married Sulochana Kumaran from Kerala. They have two daughters: Shuroma, born on October 19, 1956, and Sumita, born on June 20, 1958. Manna Dey currently lives in Bangalore in the township of Kalyannagar after spending more than fifty years in Bombay. He also maintains a Calcutta address. He still travels widely in the world to present musical programs. Renowned singer, Mohammad Rafi, once said to reporters: "You listen to my songs. I listen only to Manna Dey's songs".[citation needed] According to musicians Sachin Dev Burman and Anil Biswas, Manna Dey could sing any song of Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh and Talat Mehmood. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007. Along with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh he was a part of Indian film playback music industry. He is rated as the best classical singer among all singers of Hindi film music, though he sang various types of songs from pop to folk. He has recorded more than 3500 songs over the course of his career.

Prabodh Chandra Dey, known by his stage name Manna Dey, was an Indian playback singer. Manna Dey sang in many different languages but primarily he sang for Hindi Films or play backed for Bengali Film Songs. He debuted in the film Tamanna in 1942,the musical score was by Krishna Chandra Dey and Manna sang a duet named "Jago Aayee Usha Ponchi Boley Jago" with Suraiya which was an instant hit. Manna Dey went on to record more than 4000 songs from 1942 to 2013. He sang for first time songs composed by Sachin Dev Burman, Upar Gagan Vishal and Duniya Ke Logo in the 1950 movie Mashal, which became popular and from here his association with S.D.Burman began. Its lyrics were written by Kavi Pradeep. In 1952, Dey sang for a Bengali and a Marathi movie with the same name and storyline, Amar Bhupali. This established him as a leading playback singer in Bengali films and Marathi films as well by 1953. Manna Dey was one of the most versatile male playback singer of his era. Skilled in Indian Classical Music and other various formats, Manna Dey had an unparalleled reputation. Especially his signature style of singing and his vocal range was phenomenal.
This compilation album contains some of the Best Of Manna Dey Songs from Bengali Films. Apart from doing playback for Bengali Films Manna Dey also sang and composed for many private albums especially in Bengali. This changed the course of Modern Bengali Songs. This album has hit Manna Dey tracks like Bharat Amar Bharat Barsha from the Superhit film CharMurti and Ei Brishtite Bhije Mati a super duper duet with Lata Mangeshkar. About Manna Dey :-
Prabodh Chandra Dey (born May 1, 1919), better known by his nickname Manna Dey (Bengali: মান্না দে Manna De), is one of the greatest playback singers of all time in Hindi films and other vernacular Indian films, especially Bengali.
Manna dey was born to Purna Chandra (father) and Mahamaya Dey (mother)on 1 May, 1919. Besides his parents, his youngest paternal uncle Sangeetacharya (meaning "Venerable Teacher of Music" in Sanskrit) K. C. Dey highly inspired and influenced him. Manna received his early education in a small pre-primary school named Indu Babur Pathshala. Thereafter he attended Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College, followed by Vidyasagar College where he received his graduate education. From his childhood, Manna showed a keen liking for wrestling and boxing, and excelled in both sports. He has a jovial personality and likes to play pranks on people once in a while.
His experimentation with western music has produced some unforgettable melodies. He has recorded more than 3500 songs.
On December 18, 1953, Manna Dey married Sulochana Kumaran from Kerala. They have two daughters: Shuroma, born on October 19, 1956, and Sumita, born on June 20, 1958.
Manna Dey currently lives in Bangalore in the township of Kalyannagar after spending more than fifty years in Bombay. He also maintains a Calcutta address. He still travels widely in the world to present musical programs.
Renowned singer, Mohammad Rafi, once said to reporters: "You listen to my songs. I listen only to Manna Dey's songs".[citation needed] According to musicians Sachin Dev Burman and Anil Biswas, Manna Dey could sing any song of Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh and Talat Mehmood.
Manna Dey has been honored with the titles Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.
