Syria's civil war has killed more than 140,000 people. The city of Homs, once seen as the capital of the revolution, is now mostly controlled by government forces. Attack and starvation drove scores of rebels to flee or surrender, while the UN evacuated civilians in February. And yet, life goes on for some inhabitants. Lindsey Hilsum of Independent Television News reports from the besieged city.

The city's market place was seen bustling with life, contrasting with other parts of the city which have been reduced to rubble due to intense fighting, including a three-year-long siege that ended in 2014 with the Syrian Arab Army regaining control of the city.
"We have been working here before the war broke out for nearly 25 years, the situation was pretty good. Then the war erupted inflicting harm and pain. We fled the store nearly nine years ago and came back about a year and a half ago," said Ahmed Sebsebi al-Rifa'i, a trader in Homs market. "The situation is great as the country is heading toward recovery. So we call for all people who left to far or near places to return to Syria."
Previously a major industrial centre, the city is now trying to recover with reconstruction underway since 2018.
SOT, Lamiaa al-Naser, Homs Local (Arabic): "I lived here for nearly 6 months during the fighting. We were here in Homs. It was critical days. We did not imagine that all these distressing events grapple Syria. We wasted the best years of our lives. We were studying at the university and the situation was extremely difficult, but we managed to overcome the situation, praise be to God, regardless of being away from our families, as many people were forced to travel."

SOT, Mary Aboud, A trader in Homs market (Arabic): "Prior to the crisis, We had a jewellery shop, so our life was comfortably good. Then when the crisis broke out I travelled overseas with my family and spent 4-5 years abroad. When we heard that safety had returned we came back, but we had been gravely inflicted, we found our shops burnt into the ground, our homes ravaged, and our friends died and relatives left. The damage was dire. We were distressed but Praise to God we came back. We were able to rejuvenate our life again and went back to our stores and our homes."
SOT, Abu Ali Farid, A trader in Homs market (Arabic): "We have longed for the years 2010-2011 because they were tremendously good days. Intimacy and love dominated our lives. The market as you see today suffers a rise in the prices impeding customers to buy. In the past, the movement of buying and selling was better. Then came the crisis and the war, and armed criminal gangs entered here in the market and ravaged and vandalized the whole place. I like many neighbours have been deprived of their merchandises, including wholesalers and factories even shops all have been vandalized and burned. This area called Old Homs was not accessible."

Israeli planes said to strike Syrian airbase near Homs, wounding 6.
Six Syrian soldiers were wounded in an Israeli airstrike targeting the Tiyas, or T-4, airbase, outside of the Syrian city of Palmyra on Friday night, according to Syrian media.
The state-run SANA broadcaster said at around 9:30 p.m, Israeli warplanes launched their missiles from the direction of al-Tanf, a US outpost on the border between Syria, Jordan, and Iraq, and hit the airbase.
An official quoted by the state TV station said Syrian air defenses hit most of the incoming missiles. But he reported that six soldiers were wounded in the attack and that there was unspecified damage. There were no further details.
The airbase has been struck multiple times in recent years, allegedly by Israel.
Israeli defense officials have claimed in the past that the base is used by Iranian forces as part of the Islamic Republic’s efforts to entrench militarily in Syria, something Israel has vowed to prevent.
In February 2018, an Israeli jet was shot down in an attack on the T-4 base during a one-day skirmish with Iran-backed forces.
In April of that year, Israel attacked the base again in order to destroy a recently delivered Iranian advanced anti-aircraft system, killing at least seven members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, and seven members of the Syrian army.
Israel’s military does not comment on reports of specific strikes in Syria, save for those that are in retaliation for attacks from the country.
Israel has launched hundreds of strikes against Iran-linked military targets in Syria over the years, but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations.
Israel fears Iranian entrenchment on its northern frontier, and it has repeatedly struck Iran-linked facilities and weapons convoys destined for Hezbollah.

Some residents in the area have managed to carry out renovation work themselves - on their homes, shops and businesses that were badly hit by fighting.
In the devastated Khaldiyeh district, carpenters fixed the windows and doors of Mohammed Bayraqdar's charred apartment.
