Einstein's Dreams is a 1992 novel by Alan Lightman that was an international bestseller and has been translated into thirty languages. It was runner up for the 1994 L. L. Winship/PEN New England Award. Einstein's Dreams was also the March 1998 selection for National Public Radio's "Talk of the Nation" Book Club. The novel has been used in numerous colleges and universities, in many cases for university-wide adoptions in "common-book" programs.
Einstein's Dreams was first adapted for the stage by David Gardiner and Ralf Remshardt and performed at the University of Florida in 1996. An off-off-Broadway production of this stage version ran briefly at the New York Fringe Festival in 2001; it has also been performed in Beijing (2009).
The novel fictionalizes Albert Einstein as a young scientist who is troubled by dreams as he works on his theory of relativity in 1905. The book consists of 30 chapters, each exploring one dream about time that Einstein had during this period. The framework of the book consists of a prelude, three interludes, and an epilogue. Einstein's friend, Michele Besso, appears in these sections. Each dream involves a conception of time. Some scenarios may involve exaggerations of true phenomena related to relativity, and some may be entirely fantastical. The book demonstrates the relationship each human being has to time, and thus spiritually affirms Einstein's theory of relativity.
Alan Paige Lightman (born November 28, 1948) is an American physicist, writer, and social entrepreneur. He is a professor of humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the author of the international bestseller Einstein's Dreams. Einstein's Dreams has been adapted into dozens of independent theatrical productions and is one of the most widely used "common books" on college campuses. Lightman was the first professor at MIT to receive a joint appointment in the sciences and the humanities. He is also the founder of the Harpswell Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower a new generation of women leaders in Cambodia.
Lightman was born in Memphis, Tennessee. His father was Richard Lightman, a movie theater owner, and his mother, Jeanne Garretson, a dancing teacher and volunteer Braille typist. He is one of four brothers, including Big Star bass guitarist John Lightman.
A surname or family name is a name added to a given name. In many cases, a surname is a family name and many dictionaries define "surname" as a synonym of "family name". In the western hemisphere, it is commonly synonymous with last name because it is usually placed at the end of a person's given name.
In most Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries, two or more last names (or surnames) may be used. In China, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Madagascar, Taiwan, Vietnam, and parts of India, the family name is placed before a person's given name.
The style of having both a family name (surname) and a given name (forename) is far from universal. In many countries, it is common for ordinary people to have only one name or mononym.
The concept of a "surname" is a relatively recent historical development, evolving from a medieval naming practice called a "byname". Based on an individual's occupation or area of residence, a byname would be used in situations where more than one person had the same name.
Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur usually involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not definitively understood, though they have been a topic of scientific speculation, as well as a subject of philosophical and religious interest, throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology.
Dreams mainly occur in the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep—when brain activity is high and resembles that of being awake. REM sleep is revealed by continuous movements of the eyes during sleep. At times, dreams may occur during other stages of sleep. However, these dreams tend to be much less vivid or memorable.
The length of a dream can vary; they may last for a few seconds, or approximately 20–30 minutes. People are more likely to remember the dream if they are awakened during the REM phase. The average person has three to five dreams per night, and some may have up to seven; however, most dreams are immediately or quickly forgotten. Dreams tend to last longer as the night progresses. During a full eight-hour night sleep, most dreams occur in the typical two hours of REM.

Elegant Universe - Einstein's Dreams - DOCS CHANNEL Among the most ambitious and also interesting concepts ever suggested-- one that might be the long-sought "theory of everything," which avoided also Einstein-- gets a masterful, lavishly computer-animated explanation from bestselling author-physicist Brian Greene, when NOVA offers the nuts, screws, and sometimes straight-out nuttiness of string theory. Likewise referred to as superstring concept, the stunning suggestion proposes that the basic ingredients of nature are inconceivably small strings of energy, whose different methods of vibration underlie everything that happens in deep space. The concept effectively unifies the legislations of the large-- general relativity-- and also the laws of the tiny-- quantum technicians-- destroyin...
Alan Lightman discusses the distinctions between how scientists try to name things -- to identify and to distill, so that there is only a single meaning of a thing, like an equation -- and the artist tries to avoid naming things. The scientist works by formulating questions that have definite answers, while in the arts, the answer is less important, and often an answer does not exist. Both scientists and artists are seeking truth, and in this their enterprises are similar. But the truths are different. In the sciences, it is truth in the world of mass and force -- the external world -- and in the arts, it is truth in the world of the mind and the heart -- the internal world. I review 'Einstein's Dreams' by Alan Lightman. Lightman's first work of fiction, it is made up of a dozen or so different short passages that deal with the nature of time. Philosophical, intriguing, and very short, everybody should give it a quick read, if they can.

It's crazy, dreams amaze me
Strange dreams, love dreams, hate dreams
Don't wanna know when I'm awake
It's crazy, dreams amaze me
Strange dreams, love dreams, hate dreams
Don't wanna know when I'm awake
It's crazy, dreams amaze me
Strange dreams, love dreams, hate dreams
Don't wanna know when I'm awake
Once in my dream
I felt exactly like I was him
And the feeling was strangely familiar
One of those that you can never forget
Even if you're sad in the end
Sinful, daunted, and left alone in disgrace
I know that it wouldn't been my case if I hadn't braced myself for the moment of truth
I woke up and had to choose
Woke up and had to choose
Happily the choice was easy
And my common sense too busy
Trying to figure out where truth begins
I choose not to be afraid to be great
Not to be late to cross any gate
That opens only once in a lifetime
And there's usually no time to think twice
I choose to go three times when no one ever goes at any time
Four times or even more
I want to make sure if I can lift my body above the floor
I know it's not impossible
I choose not to hesitate to go straight
If a friend leads me astray
I'll tell him to go away
There's no other way, innit?
There's no other way
More or less, one big mess
The dream came to end
Got lost
But not without a trace upon my face
I'm aware of who I am
And who I'd rather be
That's it
It's crazy, dreams amaze me
Strange dreams, love dreams, hate dreams
Don't wanna know when I'm awake
It's crazy, dreams amaze me
Strange dreams, love dreams, hate dreams
Don't wanna know when I'm awake (wanna know when I'm awake)
As I lay me down to sleep
Cosy underneath the sheets
Glue my pillow to my cheek
Reality becomes a dream
And as crazy as this may seem
All my dreams are in fact reality
Reality
Let you know this ain't no nonsense, see
It happens quite subconsciously
When my mind goes travelling
Pass time unraveling
Taking my emotions back to where
I used to be a few years ago
Remembering a few peers and foes
And the person I was
It gets kind of scary
Yes, because
Reliving some past situations can get kind of painful
Those days full of no inspiration
Looking at the future with great hesitation
And then, suddenly, I awaken
In a cold sweat, thinking 'damn'
Sleep really is the cousin of death
Just like my man Nas said
But I
Don't let it get to my head like Brand Nub
Instead I get out of bed for some canned brew
Afterwards feeling brand new, put on some Badu
And go back to
The land of snooze
Put on some Badu and go back to
The land of snooze
It's crazy, dreams amaze me
Strange dreams, love dreams, hate dreams (hate dreams)
Don't wanna know when I'm awake (don't wanna know when I'm awake)
It's crazy, dreams amaze me (dreams amaze me)
Strange dreams, love dreams, hate dreams (hate dreams)
Don't wanna know when I'm awake (wanna know when I'm awake)
It's crazy (it's crazy), dreams amaze me (dreams amaze me)
Strange dreams, love dreams, hate dreams (hate dreams)
Wanna know when I'm awake
It's crazy, dreams amaze me
Strange dreams, love dreams
Wanna know when I'm awake
It's crazy, dreams amaze me ([...] dreams [...] amaze me)
Strange dreams, love dreams, hate dreams (please don't go away [...])
(Don't wanna know when I'm awake)
