ART AND CONSCIOUSNESS-PART II -
Revolutionary Love Leaders William S.
Peters, Sr. and L.
Michelle Odom lead a discussion on the role of art and the artist in raising community consciousness. This video brings together clips taken from throughout tonight's event.
Part II of our discussion on the role of the artist begins with the reading of two poems – “
Five Spot” and “In
Line” – by
Shareef Abdur-Rasheed and ‘just bill,’ respectively.
Comments include the different ways in which people learn and the power of the arts to touch us in special ways.
We then shared our appreciation of each other and how we feel about our inclusion in
Series 2 of the
Revolutionary Love Leadership Series. Venita
Walker expressed her love for
Bill’s work and how much she has learned from Shareef’s presence. Shareef mentioned some of the artists who touched his life, like
Rakim and
Big Daddy Kane. Michelle reminded our audience
that Shareef Abdur-Rasheed recently published his first book, “
Poetic Snacks for the Conscious
Munchies,” and noted our co-host,
William S. Peters, Sr., is the author of close to 40 books, and has published, via
Inner Child Press, the works of many other artists.
Finally, bringing her to tears, Bill praised the work of this reading circle and encouraged Michelle (as usual) to write the books he knows are resting in her breast.
Love's word this evening focused on the
Epilogue, included in the anthology “
Black Male-D,” by Inner Child Press, and the Series 2
Closing. L. Michelle Odom and William S. Peters, Sr. co-hosted the event and were joined by Love
Leaders Venita Goines Walker and Shareef Abdur-Rasheed. Feeling our creative selves tonight, Shareef read his poem "Five Spot"; and our co-host and resident poet, 'just bill' closed out Series 2 with a powerful reading of his poem, "In Line."
