When God created man, He allotted man the responsibility of managing 'Time' with the warning that if 'Time' is managed well, man can really go places -- gain success and be less stressed in life. Each and every human is bestowed with this gift of time before he steps foot on earth. Be it someone born in a desert region or in the Alps or in a rich household or in a far of village -- time allotted to each and everyone is the same -- 24 hours per living day. Apposite management of these hours on a daily basis is what shifts your gear in the success mode. Inappropriate management of time is a recipe for unsuccessfulness. I look at killing time to be equivalent as wastage of a precious resource. You know how the saying goes -- time and tide wait for no one -- it is true. Time that has passed can never be brought back. We do not have second chances with time. A day wasted is a day buried. You could earn money back again, but earning time again? Unheard of and quite ridiculous I must say. You can't borrow time like you do with money to make up for waste, lost or lack of the later. Time is not money. Time is much more valuable than money. Physically you can measure time with watches, clocks and other such gadgets. However, psychologically you can never measure time even if you attempt to. Allow me to elaborate. Time that has flown is perceived as short; whereas time that has yet to be encountered by us is perceived to be long. When we are bogged down with a lot of work that needs to be cleared at the earliest or are very busy with chores, time seems to fly by. But when you are free and have absolutely nothing to do and are bored out of your mind, you feel that time is just not moving. You tap your watch to check if it is working and hope for the minutes to whizz past just as fast as when you thought time was slipping through your fingers. Same logic applies for when you are battling a bad phase or are enjoying a good phase in life. A thought may occur to you if the topic of time management is targeting at overtly ambitious or busy people or if it also applies to those who move through life at a moderate pace? Well, in my opinion, it is for both and even for those who may not have much to do during the day. It is no secret that knowing how to manage time means knowing how to keep yourself organised, knowing what comes next, being clear of how to go about achieving that end result, and most importantly, reducing stress levels within you. It is not an easy job initially, but once you come down to doing it, we realise its importance and fall in love with this organised way of living. Schools, colleges, universities abide by a schedule for students and teachers both. This makes administration smoother and also promises a successfully well organised day. Even if a housewife follows a routine, she will learn the ease with which her day floats by. Time management is a tool to ensure your focus -- this is confirmed by a study that concludes with a 20% success rate against 80% unfocussed efforts as opposed to an 80% success rate against a mere 20% of focussed efforts. Now that you know this fact, would you still go by the paradox of time management being a waste of time? How many of us have wished for more than 24 hours in a day? I know I have. Well, till I identified areas that had me wasting precious time. You should do the same. Identify these areas. To begin the task of managing time, as mentioned earlier in this chapter, we must first chart out how are we going about, currently, utilising time. How much are we wasting and how much time are we rightfully utilising is what we must distinguish. For this we should list our tasks for the day and allot the ideal amount of time that should be spent on this task. Following this, we should analyse how much time do we spend on a task in actuality. Deliberate over what can be done to cover the difference in time. Let us start with maintaining a time log. This time log will break your 24 hours into intervals of 15 minutes. So now your day is divided into 96 parts. Next to each part, make an entry in this time log. Let's assume you wake up at six each morning. At six you brushed your teeth and answered nature's call, at 6:15 you sipped on your cup of tea, at 6:30 you went in for a shower, so on and so forth. Write down each and every action -- the minute of the minutest detail. With full confidence I can confirm with you that after four days of maintaining this time log and reviewing it at the end of each day, you will be able to pin point exactly the slots of wastage. When you identify wasted time in your day, you will become more conscious to avoid this. This will make you even more able to manage your time towards being more productive throughout the day.
