James Bond (literary character)
Royal Navy Commander James Bond, CMG, RNVR, is a fictional character created by British journalist and novelist Ian Fleming in 1953. He is the protagonist of the James Bond series of novels, films, comics and video games. Fleming wrote twelve Bond novels and two short story collections before his death, although the last two books—The Man with the Golden Gun and Octopussy and The Living Daylights—were published posthumously.
The Bond character is a Secret Service agent, code number 007, residing in London but active internationally. Bond was a composite character who was based on a number of commandos whom Fleming knew during his service in the Naval Intelligence Division during World War II, to whom Fleming added his own style and a number of his own tastes; Bond's name was appropriated from American ornithologist James Bond. Bond has a number of character traits which run throughout the books, including an enjoyment of cars, a love of food and drink, and an average intake of sixty custom-made cigarettes a day.

Colonel Sun is a novel by Kingsley Amis published by Jonathan Cape on 28 March 1968 under the pseudonym "Robert Markham". Colonel Sun is the first James Bond continuation novel published after Ian Fleming's 1964 death. Before writing the novel, Amis wrote two other Bond related works, the literary study The James Bond Dossier and the humorous The Book of Bond. Colonel Sun centres on the fictional British Secret Service operative James Bond and his mission to track down the kidnappers of M, his superior at the Secret Service. During the mission he discovers a communist Chinese plot to cause an international incident. Bond, assisted by a Greek spy working for the Russians, finds M on a small Aegean island, rescues him and kills the two main plotters: Colonel Sun Liang-tan and a former Nazi commander, Von Richter.
Amis drew upon a holiday he had taken in the Greek islands to create a realistic Greek setting and characters. He emphasised political intrigue in the plot more than Fleming had done in the canonical Bond novels, also adding revenge to Bond's motivations by including M's kidnapping. Despite keeping a format and structure similar to Fleming's Bond novels, Colonel Sun was given mixed reviews.
Colonel Sun was serialised in the Daily Express newspaper in 1968 and adapted as a comic strip in the same newspaper in 1969–1970. Elements from the story have been used in the Eon Productions Bond series: The 1999 instalment The World Is Not Enough used M's kidnapping, whilst the villain of 2002 film Die Another Day, Colonel Tan-Sun Moon, owes his name to Colonel Sun Liang-tan. Chapter 19 ('The Theory and Practice of Torture') was adapted for the torture scene in the Spectre (2015)). Though Blofeld replaced Sun as Bond's tormentor, much of Blofeld's dialogue in the scene was written by Amis for Sun, resulting in an acknowledgement to Amis' estate in the end title credits, though no mention of the book itself.

William Boyd 'asked Daniel Craig's advice' for new James Bond book Solo
William Boyd has revealed he asked Daniel Craig's advice before writing the new James Bond novel - but admitted he would cast Daniel Day-Lewis as his ideal 007.
The writer, whose book Solo is published on September 26, is the latest in a long line of novelists to continue the adventures of the spy first created by Ian Fleming.
Boyd said he approached the story, which sees 007 embroiled in a civil war in 1969 Africa, as a fan of both the books and films.
He said: "The thing is with the literary Bond, as opposed to the cinematic Bond, is that he's a very complex character. I mean he is a cool, capable, guy and he's a very successful operative but what makes him fascinating for readers is the darker side of him, he's troubled, he makes mistakes, and I think that three dimensional portrait of him you get in the novels explains why he's not just some cardboard caricature spy, he's a real living, breathing, interesting individual."
Boyd, who has written screenplays for films starring three Bond actors - Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan and Craig - said he had "discussions" with the current 007 about whether he should write the book.
He said: "I knew he was going to say yes."
The writer, whose novel Restless was adapted for television last year, said it was "highly unlikely" Solo would be made for the cinema.
He said: "It is set in 1969 and the Bond films are always set in the present day. They'll never make a retro Bond, I suppose they can take my plot and update it but then it would be different and because it's set in the 1960s it gives it a particular flavour."
Boyd, who has written his personal recipe for the perfect dry martini into the book, added: "If there was to be an actor to play my James Bond, I'd choose another actor who has also been in a film of mine and who I also know and who is also called Daniel - Daniel Day-Lewis - because I think Daniel Day-Lewis actually resembles the Bond that Fleming describes."

The ownership of the SPECTRE organisation and its characters had been at the centre of long-standing litigation starting in 1961 between Ian Fleming and Kevin McClory over the film rights to the novel Thunderball after Fleming incorporated elements of an undeveloped film script written by McClory into Thunderball. In 1963 Fleming settled out of court with McClory, which awarded McClory the film rights and in turn enabled him to become a producer for the 1965 film Thunderball—with Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman as executive producers—and the non-canonical film Never Say Never Again in 1983.[N 1] Under the terms of the settlement, the literary rights stayed with Fleming.[9]
In November 2013 MGM and the McClory estate formally settled the issue with Danjaq, LLC—the parent company of Eon Productions—and MGM acquiring the full copyright film rights to the concept of SPECTRE and all of the characters associated with it.
