Food for Thought

Did you know that we throw out 40% of the food we produce?  And 25% of the food produced is thrown out by households.  Suddenly, though, this waste is starting to get noticed.

The first thing that happened was that Trader Joe’s ex-president started a non-profit that sells surplus and unsold food at very low prices: 99 cents for a dozen eggs, 29 cents for a pound of bananas.  There’s only one store so far, and it’s in Boston, but the model may pick up steam.

The second thing that happened was a law enacted in France that requires supermarkets …

Hillary Clinton Channels Allen and John Foster Dulles

Is the Clinton Foundation the Dulles Brother’s Sullivan and Cromwell?

According to Counterpunch editors Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair:

The desire for secrecy is one of Mrs. Clinton’s enduring and damaging traits…Befitting a Midwestern Methodist with a bullying father, repression has always been one of Mrs. Clinton’s most prominent characteristics. Hers has been the instinct to conceal, to deny, to refuse to admit any mistake. Mickey Kantor, the Los Angeles lawyer who worked on the 1992 [presidential] campaign, said that Hillary adamantly refused to admit to any mistakes. Since Vietnam, there’s never been a war that Mrs. Clinton didn’t like. She argued passionately in the White House for the

The Mythification of Climate Change

Now that Super Tuesday is over, it looks like Donald Trump is the likely Republican presidential nominee. Not only is this bad news to women and the majority of the earth’s population against whom Trump’s sexist and racist politics would harm should be be president, but the earth might be Trump’s biggest casualty.

ThinkProgress created a climate and energy candidate chart and Trump’s politics regarding climate issues are Onionesque as Trump has repeatedly gone against scientific consensus mocking the notion of climate change while demonstrating that he understands very little about this subject.

Leap Manifesto Brings Out Worst in Some “Leaders”

What is it with union and political ‘leaders’ who treat their members as if they were children not old enough to deal with reality?

Across Canada for the past three days the right wing media has been attacking the NDP for passing a resolution agreeing to “discuss” over the next two years the Leap Manifesto, a common sense document that calls for taking global warming seriously, actually doing what is necessary to prevent our planet from being cooked and trying to create a better world while we attempt to ensure our collective survival.

Of course, condemnations from the Tyrannosaurus Rex Murphys …

The Logic of Murder in Israel: A Culture of Impunity in Full View of the Entire World

“Whether he made a mistake or not, is a trivial question,” said an Israeli Jewish man who joined large protests throughout Israel in support of a soldier who calmly, and with precision, killed a wounded Palestinian man in al-Khalil (Hebron). The protesting Jewish man described Palestinians as ‘barbaric’, ‘bestial’, who should not be perceived as people.

This is hardly a fringe view in Israel. The vast majority of Israelis, 68%, support the killing of Abdel Fatah Yusri al-Sharif, 21, by the solider who had reportedly announced before firing at the wounded Palestinian that the “terrorist had to die.”

Latest Corbyn Hit-Piece: He earns MP’s Salary

If I hadn’t seen for myself that this article “exposing” Jeremy Corbyn was published on the Daily Telegraph’s website, I would have assumed it was a spoof from The Onion – an even more preposterous one than normal.

In a lengthy hit-piece, the Telegraph suggests that Corbyn is a hypocrite for criticising David Cameron over his efforts to conceal the financial benefits he received from his father’s tax-haven investments.

What’s the Telegraph’s evidence for accusing Corbyn of a double standard?

Corbyn is apparently part of the fat-cat class himself because he earnt £1.5 million. That sounds a lot – except it was his total earnings as an …

Going Negative: Sanders, the Clintons and the Exploitation of Dead Children

It wasn’t long ago—just a couple months—that Hillary Clinton was whining about Bernie Sanders “going negative” in their debates. You see, in Hillary’s alternate reality (one unfortunately shared by the Democratic establishment, the corporate media and a large portion of left-leaning voters), any and all criticism leveled at her or her degenerate husband is unfair and just flat out mean.

To criticize a Clinton is to be a “hater.” After all, look at everything they’ve done for us! What’s not to love? Remember: we’re dealing with The Most Qualified Presidential Candidate Ever. This designation, say the great pundits of our age, …

Free Trade Agreements, Tariffs and Tax Reductions

“Squeezing the Lemon Dry” on Behalf of Giant Corporations

Big capital has constantly decreased its contribution to the state – creating a gap in the state’s coffers which is then filled by more and varied taxes on ordinary people – ultimately shrinking the very market big capital needs to sell its increased production of goods.

Tariffs and Taxes

Before the income tax was imposed on us just 80 years ago, government had no claim to our income. Only sales, excise, and tariff taxes were allowed.

— Alan Keyes

Free trade areas and free trade agreements have allowed for the growth of multinational corporations but the concomitant reductions in tariffs caused a decline in …

Trump “the Fascist”

Backdoor Backing of a Political Psychopath Named Hilary Clinton

From left to right a raucous chorus has emerged to denounce Republican Presidential primary frontrunner Donald Trump as a ‘fascist’. They cite his campaign promises to build an Israeli-style wall along the US border; his threats to expel eleven million undocumented immigrants; and to restrict foreign Muslims from entering the US, as well as the way his pugnacious face and arm resemble those of Benito Mussolini (‘he juts out his chin, he raises his arm’). They decry his extreme nationalism as ‘resembling Hitler’s policy’, by which they mean his opposition to detrimental free trade agreements and his slogan to …

Jewish Money and the Labour Party: Here Are the Numbers

If you are curious about why the Labour Party has been groveling to the Jewish Lobby for the last few months, Jewish Donor Michael Foster provides the nitty gritty — the numbers of kosher domination.

In his commentary in the Daily Mail , Foster, who donated £400.000 to the party ahead of last May’s election, reveals: “This year, no major Jewish donor has given a pound to the central Labour Party.”

The numbers are shocking. “In the run-up to last May’s General Election, the Jewish community donated almost one-third of the £9.7 million that Labour received from private donors – and that despite …

Greece loses its Soul

The soul of Greece has flown away, zipping past Mount Olympus, gone.

The negotiating position of Greece à la Troika has gone from bad to worse to much worse, as suffocation of the body politic is well underway. The politicians of Greece have become pliable pawns in the hands of the all-powerful European Troika.

It’s all about saving the Banks, saving the Creditors. The people, well, they don’t count for much “they’re nothing more than numbers,” maybe worse. Plastic bureaucrats see it that way.

Zoe Konstantopoulou, a Greek lawyer and former Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, recently (April) discussed the issues at …

Zionism: Imperialism in the Age of Counter-revolution

Coercive Engineered Migration: Zionism's War on Europe (Part 11 of an 11 Part Series)

During the 1920s General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Josef Stalin formulated what he considered to be the essential contribution of Lenin to Marxist political economy. Leninism, he wrote, is Marxism in the era of proletarian revolution. Since 1989 proletarian and national liberation revolutions throughout the world have been overturned by a general, global counter-revolutionary upsurge. It is a a political phenomenon that has seen the onslaught of US colour revolutions, which seek to do away with the bourgeois nation-state itself, the last barrier to the total exploitation of the world by the global corporate and financial …

Is Hillary Qualified? Is Bernie Qualified? Who Decides?

So what happens if a campaign tries “disqualification” as a tactic?

Hillary Clinton and the Clinton campaign hinted and hinted and hinted that Bernie Sanders is not qualified to be president, but they may never have actually said it. No matter. Some news media believed them, took the hints for facts, and reported that Hillary said Bernie was not qualified. In response, Bernie openly and loudly said Hillary is not qualified to be president. New York media predators had a grand time chewing on all this raw meat. And that was just last week.

The week began predictably enough with …

The War on Savings: The Panama Papers, Bail-Ins, and the Push to Go Cashless

Exposing tax dodgers is a worthy endeavor, but the “limited hangout” of the Panama Papers may have less noble ends, dovetailing with the War on Cash and the imminent threat of massive bail-ins of depositor funds.

The bombshell publication of the “Panama Papers,” leaked from a Panama law firm specializing in shell companies, has triggered both outrage and skepticism. In an April 3 article titled “Corporate Media Gatekeepers Protect Western 1% From Panama Leak,” UK blogger Craig Murray writes that the whistleblower no doubt had good intentions; but he made the mistake of leaking his 11.5 million documents to the …

Controlling History: The Sordid Story of the International Tribunal for Yugoslavia and NATO Aggression

After having stoked the civil wars and violent dismantling of Yugoslavia of 1991-1995, the United States—with the help of the ICTY—stoked a crisis in Kosovo which it used to force a war against Serbia, a war which enabled the U.S.-led NATO bloc to occupy Kosovo and later separate it from Serbia, and left Serbia a crushed and subservient state. The construction and use of the ICTY to demonize Serbs was part of the war-making plan, as the ICTY called for refusing to negotiate a settlement with, and pursuing as criminals, Serb targets.

The Establishment Snarls a Warning to Sanders

Paul Krugman Over the Top

When Republicans are in the White House, Paul Krugman and the New York Times sometimes sound pretty good. But when someone starts seriously and effectively challenging core assumptions and values of our political economic system, the progressive veneer quickly vanishes.  This is demonstrated in Paul Krugman’s verbal attack on the Bernie Sanders campaign in his “Sanders Over the Edge” editorial.

Krugman does not hold back. Bernie supporters and Bernie himself are described by Krugman as intolerant, cultish, shallow, vague, without substance, lacking character and values, dishonest, short on ethics, really bad, petulant and self-righteous. Wow!

Krugman’s diatribe deserves scrutiny and lampooning. …

When will the Lights go out in Venezuela?

My friend Jose tells me that the electrical outages haven’t so far had too great an impact on him and his family in Merida, Venezuela. I’d asked if the food in his refrigerator spoiled more quickly and he laughed. “Well, you know the ‘fridge stays cold for a while without electricity,” he said. “And besides, these days, there’s very little in the fridge.” He’d just come from spending eleven hours in a line: from 3 a.m. until 2 p.m., to get just two bags of flour, the first he’d had in some two weeks. Food was clearly a bigger concern …

Star Trek and the End of Occupation

Part 2

See Part 1.

Back in the 1960s, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry depicted a 23rd century future where the bridge of an Earth spaceship had an African, an East Asian, a Slav, Anglos, and a half human/half Vulcan crew exploring the galaxy together in — for the most part — respectful harmony. In the 1980s, Roddenberry was behind the series Star Trek: The Next Star Generation. The spaceship Enterprise again had a diverse crew. By the 1990s, TV executives felt comfortable enough to allow a Black captain on the Star Trek: Deep Space 9 series and a female captain …

Paris is Burning!

This week we take a look at the multiple converging flashpoints of resistance in France, which have combined into a popular movement that has inspired over a million peeps to take to the streets in a massive expression of collective rage.

On the music break, we have French antifa hip hop group Sang Mêlé, with Le Bal Des Insurgé.es.

No Lawyers, No Jail

Judge Demands Constitution Be Respected in Louisiana Public Defender Catastrophe

New Orleans Criminal Court Judge Arthur Hunter, a former police officer, ruled that seven people awaiting trial in jail without adequate legal defense must be released.  The law is clear. The US Supreme Court, in their 1963 case Gideon v Wainwright, ruled that everyone who is accused of a crime has a Constitutional right to a lawyer at the state’s expense if they cannot afford one. However, Louisiana, in the middle of big budget problems, has been disregarding the constitutional right of thousands of people facing trial in its most recent statewide public defender meltdown. Judge Hunter ruled …
