Gourmet (Sik Gaek , 식객) also known as Trencherman, Best Chef is a 2008 Korean television series by SBS starring Kim Rae Won and Nam Sang Mi
Following in the footsteps of the most popular Korean TV drama of all time (based on worldwide sales), Jewel in the Palace (a.k.a. Dae Jang Geum), Gourmet’s main storyline focuses on the artistic and colorful dishes of Korean cuisine. The 24-episode TV mini-series first debuted in Korea on June 18, 2008 to September 9.
The television adaptation follows a movie based upon the same manga, Le Grand Chef
Talented chefs Bong Joo and Sung Chan were raised like brothers after Sung Chan was orphaned and taken in by Bong Joo's family. Bong Joo’s family owns a famous traditional Korean restaurant and claims descent from the last royal chef of the Joseon Dynasty. Bong Joo assumes that as the eldest, he will be the one to take over his family’s restaurant and marry Joo Hee when his father makes a surprising announcement about a special cooking contest!
Sung Chan is seen as a threat by some because of his youth, talent, creativity and non-conforming ways. Feeling sorry for him, Joo Hee tries to help him. Discovering the truth about their great-grandfather causes a crisis for Bong Joo, but he later becomes even more determined to be a success while Sung Chan decides to leave. Sung Chan becomes a food peddler, specializing in the freshest and best ingredients in traditional Korean cuisine. Will he ever become a chef again? Will they ever become united as "brothers"?
Kim Rae-won (born March 19, 1981) is a South Korean actor and model. Kim graduated from Joong-Ang University and his childhood dream was to become a basketball player, but his dream was shattered when he hurt his ankle tendon.
He starred in the movie Plum Blossom with actress Bae Doona in 2000.
He enlisted in the military in 2009 and served for 2 years; he was released from the military on August 23, 2011.
Nam Sang-mi (born May 3, 1984) is a South Korean actress.
Nam Sang-mi was working in a fast food restaurant near Hanyang University, Seoul in the fall of 2001 when someone posted her personal photos on the internet. Her popularity as an ulzzang led to her discovery as an actress. She made her debut in the 2003 MBC drama Love Letter, and began her acting career by taking small roles in movies, TV dramas, and commercials. Her first leading role came in the 2005 drama Sweet Spy.
Regarding her horror film Possessed, Nam said of the role, “The moment I read the script, I wanted this part badly. After such a long time away from films, it excited me, and I can show a completely different side than I’ve shown in dramas.”
After starring in close friend Goo Hye-sun's short film You, Goo cast her as the leading lady of her second feature film The Peach Tree.
In 2008 Cyworld featured a "Nam Sang-mi font" based on her handwriting. It was used on that internet portal and for mobile phones, eventually expanding later that year to other online services.
