An officer-involved shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, early Tuesday has sparked outrage and protests in the area.
The Baton Rouge Police Department says two officers encountered 37-year-old Alton Sterling outside a convenience store around 12:35 Tuesday morning. An altercation occurred, and Sterling was fatally shot in the chest and back.
"It could've been handled differently. On both sides, it could've been handled differently," a witness told WAFB.
Police first received a call that Sterling was selling CDs outside the convenience store and threatened the caller with a gun.
Video of the fatal shooting was recorded and posted to Facebook. One officer can be heard saying Sterling has a gun while another tells him not to move. Newsy has elected not to show the graphic footage.
Police say they've also recovered other footage from the shooting, including at least one video from the convenience store. The officers' body cameras, according to police, were knocked off during the struggle.
After word of the fatal shooting spread, WAFB reports "several hundred protesters" took to the streets.
"I really want to know more about what happened, about the whole situation, because my brother didn't deserve it. He didn't deserve it at all," a woman told WGNO.
Two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Wednesday that the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division will lead an investigation into the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge.
Edwards said after watching the video, “I have very serious concerns. The video is disturbing to say the least.”
The governor said he would be meeting with community leaders and he called for residents to remain calm. “We already have one family torn apart.”

Louisiana is the 31st most extensive and the 25th most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital is Baton Rouge and largest city is New Orleans. Louisiana is the only state in the U.S. with political subdivisions termed parishes, which are the local government's equivalent to counties. The largest parish by population is East Baton Rouge Parish, and the largest by land area is Plaquemines. Louisiana is bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, Texas to the west, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south.
Much of the state's lands were formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River, leaving enormous deltas and vast areas of coastal marsh and swamp. These contain a rich southern biota; typical examples include birds such as ibis and egrets. There are also many species of tree frogs, and fish such as sturgeon and paddlefish. In more elevated areas, fire is a natural process in the landscape, and has produced extensive areas of longleaf pine forest and wet savannas. These support an exceptionally large number of plant species, including many species of orchids and carnivorous plants.

Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. (born September 27, 1982), better known by his stage name Lil Wayne, is an American hip hop recording artist from New Orleans, Louisiana. Percy Robert Miller, known by his stage name Master P or his business name P. He is the founder of the record label No Limit Records, which was relaunched as New No Limit Records through Universal Records and Koch Records, then again as Guttar Music Entertainment, and finally, currently, No Limit Forever Records. He is the founder and CEO of P. Miller Enterprises, an entertainment conglomerate, and Better Black Television, a cable television network.
Miller gained fame in the late 1990s with the success of his hip-hop group TRU as well as his fifth solo rap album Ice Cream Man, which contained his first single "Mr. Ice Cream Man". In 1997, after the success of one of his biggest singles to date, "Make 'Em Say Uhh!," went double platinum, Miller grew further in popularity. Then Miller released his second platinum album Ghetto D. Miller also starred in his own street film, mostly based on his life, I'm Bout It.

An officer-involved shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, early Tuesday has sparked outrage and protests in the area. The Baton Rouge Police Department says two officers encountered 37-year-old Alton Sterling outside a convenience store around 12:35 Tuesday morning. An altercation occurred, and Sterling was fatally shot in the chest and back. "It could've been handled differently. On both sides, it could've been handled differently," a witness told WAFB. Police first received a call that Sterling was selling CDs outside the convenience store and threatened the caller with a gun. Video of the fatal shooting was recorded and posted to Facebook. After word of the fatal shooting spread, WAFB reports "several hundred protesters" took to the streets.
"I really want to know more about what happened, about the whole situation, because my brother didn't deserve it. He didn't deserve it at all," a woman told WGNO.
Two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

"I really want to know more about what happened, about the whole situation, because my brother didn't deserve it. He didn't deserve it at all," a woman told WGNO.
Two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
