We traveled to the border of India with Nepal, where began the legend of a creature able to attract people from around the world: The Unicorn India.
An incredible animal with a horn on its forehead, which can cure the ills of poor people who share ground with him. We follow the traces of this myth built 20 centuries ago crossing a jungle inhabited by wild creatures among which stands out one, the unicorn and is now known as the Indian rhinoceros, a unique species with enormous power on his forehead.
▶ Documentary "On the Tracks of the Unicorn"
http://pdoc.es/UnicornPL
Along the border between Nepal and India, there runs a strip of rainforests which alternate with the meadows of the lowlands. Open jungle whose floor, rich in pasture, provides food for many species of herbivores.
The presence of the Bengal tiger means the herbivores of the jungle must constantly be on the alert. Danger is ever-present.
But the tiger is not the only giant of these forests. On the intense green ground there is an animal which not even he would dare attack. The gaur, it is the largest wild bovine in the world.
All these biological marvels were already here two thousand years ago, when the first travellers spoke of this land as a magical place, inhabited by fantastic creatures, above all one in particular, the unicorn. The myth lives here, and it is the Indian rhinoceros. Just a few hundred years ago, the Indian rhinoceros grazed on all the flood plains of the Indus, the Ganges and the Brahmaputra, but now it has been reduced to just two national parks: Chitwan in Nepal and Kaziranga in India, 70% of the world population of Indian rhinoceroses live in the Kaziranga National Park.
But our unicorns have a taste for the high grasses of the banks of the swamp, and both in Kaziranga and here in Chitwan, these grasses are also a valuable resource for the human populations living around the edge of the park.
Since 1973, when it was declared a National Park, due to the fact it was the only place in Nepal where rhinoceroses remained, a number of human settlements have been moved, the people transferred to more fertile places without wild herbivores.
When the season arrives, the local inhabitants cross the river, and enter the reserves, armed with their recently-sharpened sickles.
The Indian rhinoceros deposits its faeces, creating over the years large piles which act as olfactory markers or beacons, defining its territory. Gigantic dung heaps that are impossible to ignore even for the least sensitive nose.
Another of the paradoxes of the ancient unicorn is that its horn is not the part of its body the Nepalese most appreciate.
They come to the dung heaps in search of what they swear is an infallible remedy for coughs. For them, the enormous piles of dung are a plentiful supply of the ingredients for the finest tobacco.
Rhinos are essentially solitary animals, but when the males reach sexual maturity, at ten years of age, they fight even the females when they meet. For the time being, Chitwan and Kaziranga are a good home for the rhinoceroses, with around 400 in the Nepalese park and 1,200 in the Indian one. The Indian rhinoceros have changed very little in the last million years. Rhinoceroses are perfectly content half-submerged in their very own vegetable soup, from which they eat while placing virtually no stress on their backbone, which most of the time has to carry the enormous weight of the animal.
In Bangkok, a kilo of Indian rhinoceros horn costs over three million pesetas. And, in a region where poverty is rife, the temptation to poach is enormous. The magic horn which made it a legend almost led to it join the dinosaurs, the dodo and the mammoth in the book of extinct species.
The charges for entering and camping in the park, the price of elephant tours, and lodging and permits, generate increasing income, making the local people more and more convinced that they are fortunate in having a national park on their doorstep.
Perhaps it was all true. Perhaps this is the magic of the unicorn. Night is drawing in around the Himalayas. Mist descends over the jungle where the last Indian rhinoceroses live. For some a green hell, for others the mythological forest inhabited by celestial creatures and unicorns; a place which holds an incredible fascination for all.
That is how the legend was born, with the translucent wings of the bats, perhaps under the effects of a fever, but it was here, by the Brahmaputra. It was all true. This is the home of an incredible animal, with a single horn emerging from its forehead, which can cure all the evils of the poor peoples with whom it shares this land. A being capable of attracting people from all over the world, simply in the hope of seeing it. The legend did not lie, the unicorn exists.

The park is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Rhino found dead at Kaziranga National Park,as the poachers chopped off its horn..
The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), also called the greater one-horned rhinoceros and one-horned Indian rhinoceros, belongs to the Rhinocerotidae family. Listed as a vulnerable species, the large mammal is primarily found in north-eastern India's Assam and in protected areas in the Terai of Nepal, where populations are confined to the riverine grasslands in the foothills of the Himalayas.
The Indian rhinoceros once ranged throughout the entire stretch of the Indo-Gangetic Plain, but excessive hunting reduced the natural habitat drastically. Today, about 3,000 rhinos live in the wild, 2,000 of which are found in India's Assam alone.
It is the fifth largest land animal.
Among terrestrial land mammals native to Asia, the Indian rhinoceros is second in size only to the Asian elephant. This heavily built species is also the second-largest living rhinoceros, behind only the white rhinoceros. Males have an average head and body length of 368--380 cm (12.07--12.47 ft) with a shoulder height of 163--193 cm (5.35--6.33 ft), while females have an average head and body length of 310--340 cm (10.2--11.2 ft) and a shoulder height of 147--173 cm (4.82--5.68 ft). [verification needed] The weights of captive individuals from the Basel Zoo were around 1,600 kg (3,500 lb) on average for the females and around 2,100 kg (4,600 lb) on average for the males. The skull is heavy with a basal length above 60 cm (24 in) and an occiput above 19 cm (7.5 in).
The largest sized specimens can range up to 4,000 kg (8,800 lb).
The rhino's single horn is present in both males and females, but not on newborn young. The black horn is pure keratin, like human fingernails, and starts to show after about six years. In most adults, the horn reaches a length of about 25 cm (9.8 in), but has been recorded up to 57.2 cm (22.5 in) in length. The nasal horn is slightly back-curved with a base of about 18.5 cm (7.3 in) by 12 cm (4.7 in) that rapidly narrows until a smooth, even stem part begins about 55 mm (2.2 in) above base. In captive animals, the horn is frequently worn down to a thick knob.
The Indian rhinoceros has thick, silver-brown skin, which becomes pinkish near the large skin folds that cover its body. Its upper legs and shoulders are covered in wart-like bumps. It has very little body hair, aside from eyelashes, ear fringes and tail brush. Males develop thick neck folds.

The water buffalo or domestic Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is a large bovine animal, frequently used as livestock in the Indian Subcontinent, and also widely in South America, southern Europe, the Middle East, northern Africa, and elsewhere.
In 2000, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimated there were approximately 158 million water buffalo in the world, with 97% of them (approximately 153 million animals) in Asia. There are established feral populations in northern Australia, but the dwindling true wild populations are thought to survive in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Thailand. All the domestic varieties and breeds descend from one common ancestor, the wild water buffalo, which is now an endangered species. The domestic water buffalo, although derived from the wild water buffalo, is the product of thousands of years of selective breeding in either the Indian Subcontinent or Southeast Asia.
Buffalo are used as draft, meat, and dairy animals. Their dung is used as a fertilizer, and as a fuel when dried. In the Chonburi of Thailand, Pakistan, and the southwestern region of Karnataka, India, there are annual water buffalo races known as kambala. A few have also found use as pack animals, carrying loads even for special forces.
The water buffalo genus includes water buffalo, tamaraw and anoas, all of which are Asian species. The ancestry of the African buffalo is unclear, but it is not believed to be closely related to the water buffalo.

Recognized as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International, Kaziranga has achieved notable success in Wildlife Conservation. Combining high species diversity and visibility, Kaziranga provides a vast area to large breeding populations’ elephants, swamp deer, wild water buffalo and many other species. Providing brilliant camouflage of the tall grasses the sighting of tigers is very difficult. Although the presence could be felt by seeing the territorial markings. One could enjoy Kaziranga by viewing the landscape along with few species, either elephant safari, zeep or vehicle safari or to experience at your own pace you can also go for trekking with a forest guide. The Kaziranga landscape is divided into four ranges namely – Burapahar Range, Ghorakati; Eastern Range, Agaratoli; Kaziranga Range, Kohora; and Western Range, Bagori. Trekkings are mostly preferable for the bird watchers. Providing with the best accommodations, there exists different hotels, lodge and huts as per tourist’s needs according to their individual budget and comfortability.

Kohora, Nov 20 (ANI): Two poachers were killed in an encounter with forest guards and the Special Task Force (STF) in the Kohora area of Kaziranga National Park on Friday (November 20). Kaziranga National Park is the world’s biggest reserve for the endangered great one-horned rhinoceros. The thick-skinned, one-horned Indian rhinoceros is one of the five surviving rhino species in the world. The forest guards had received prior information that a group of poachers would try to enter the national park through the National Highway-37. The forest guards noticed a group of five men entering the park in the wee hours of Friday soon after which the exchange of gunfire began. Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), Kaziranga National Park, Pradipta Baruah, said all the nearby camps in the park had been asked to maintain extra vigil. Baruah added a search operation was on to nab the remaining three poachers. So far this year 20 poachers have been gunned down by the security forces and 15 rhinos have been killed by poachers in Kaziranga National Park.

Kaziranga National Park (Assamese: কাজিৰঙা ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় উদ্যান, Kazirônga Rastriyô Udyan, pronounced [kazirɔŋa rastrijɔ udjan] ( listen)) is a national park in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the state of Assam, India. A World Heritage Site, the park hosts two-thirds of the world's great one-horned rhinoceroses.[1] According to the latest census held in March 2015, the current rhino population in Kaziranga National Park is 2,401 as published by the Forest Department under the Government of Assam, an operation conducted by the department officials in association with some recognized wildlife NGOs. The 2015 census revealed the rhino population as 1,651 adults (663 males, 802 females, 186 unsexed), 294 sub-adults (90 males, 114 females, 90 unsexed), 251 juveniles and 205 cubs. [2] Kaziranga boasts the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. The park is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer.[3] Kaziranga is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for conservation of avifaunal species. Compared to other protected areas in India, Kaziranga has achieved notable success in wildlife conservation. Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high species diversity and visibility.
Kaziranga is a vast expanse of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests, crisscrossed by four major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, and the park includes numerous small bodies of water. Kaziranga has been the theme of several books, songs, and documentaries. The park celebrated its centennial in 2005 after its establishment in 1905 as a reserve forest.

"Kaziranga National Park" is a national park and an UNESCO World Heritage Site in India. The park contains significant breeding populations of more than 35 "mammalian species", out of which 15 are threatened mammals according to the IUCN Red List.
The park has the world's single largest breeding population of Indian Rhinoceros, with the 2006 census estimating the present population to be around 1,855, around 70% of the world's total wild population of 2,700.
The park contains significant stock of three other large herbivores — the Asian Elephant, the Wild Asian Water Buffalo and the subspecies Eastern Swamp Deer . A census on wild Asiatic Buffaloes in March 2001 revealed the presence of 1,666 buffaloes — the largest single population of the species reported in this millennium, up from 677 in the 1984 census. Assam is India's most populous state with respect to Asiatic Elephants , and Kaziranga contains as many as 1,206 elephants , up from 1048 individuals . The combined Kaziranga - Karbi Anglong Elephant Reserve has as many as 1940 elephants according to the 2005 survey.
The Eastern race of the Swamp Deer also had 468 individuals existing as noted in the 2002 census, down from 756 individuals noted in the 1984 census. Other stable populations of large herbivores include the Gaur and the Sambar . Smaller herbivores include the Indian Muntjac , Wild Boar , Barking Deer and Hog Deer .
The park has a large variety of primates including all free roaming primates in India with the exception of the endemic Western Ghats primates and the newly discovered Arunachal Macaque. This includes the vulnerable and rare species of Bengal Slow Loris, Assamese Macaque, Capped Langur, Golden Langur and the only ape found in India — the Hoolock Gibbon.

A morning view of Kaziranga National Park, were we see varieties of animals like Rhino, Sambar Deer, Wild Boar taking a walk through grassland of the park.
Kaziranga National Park is a national park in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the state of Assam, India. A World Heritage Site, the park hosts two-thirds of the world's Great One-horned Rhinoceroses. Kaziranga boasts the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. The park is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Kaziranga is recognized as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International for conservation of avifaunal species.

The film’s subject, Bachada is a young, female Asian rhino living in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park.Filmed over a period of two years, RHINO STORY focuses on this one individual, reconstructing her development from infancy through adolescence to maturity. It is a difficult and confusing process for the young baby. Life starts with playful innocence and maturity is reached with the calculated manipulation of the males of the species.Using the device of the rhino’s ceaseless journey, both in time and space, the film will explore the biology and social behaviour of the Greater One-horned Rhinoceros against the rich backdrop of the national park. With rarely filmed rhino mating sequences and other unique footage of rhino behaviour, this film shows as never before, the surprising complexity of social behaviour and emotional sophistication of the Greater One-Horned Rhino.
