1 Samuel 15:22-24
22
Samuel said,
"Has the
Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice
...
We LIKE doing good things for God! But is THAT what makes God happy?
Saul decided he would do a major sacrifice to please God, but that's not what God is pleased with, but rather - He's
Happy When We
Obey Him
Unconditionally!
Deut. 18:9-13
9 "When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations..."
Sometimes,
Pastor Rob is uncomfortable preaching on a passage, but is under direction by God to preach it anyway, whether it's uncomfortable or not!
Rebellion is mëriy - stubborn - to dispute. Illustrated in word, as we saw last week. and may be illustrated in deed - when we act in opposition to God's direction.
Numbers 14:2-4 and 27-29 speaks of the congregation's grumbling against God. The consequences were to wander the wilderness until they died.
Phil 2:14-16
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing;..."
Saul never really grumbled or complained, but he DID make up his *own* mind - doing whatever seemed right to *him* at the time.
Numbers 14:2-4 and 27-29
"2 All the sons of
Israel grumbled against
Moses and Aaron...."
27 "How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who are grumbling against
Me?..."
Our acts of rebellion involve self-control and self-indulgence.
People in many places can't afford to have these challenges, but we hoard, consume to extremes - and much like Saul - we do what make us feel good, avoiding what is inconvenient and difficult. That's rebellion! That's disobedience!
For example, several in our church are developing and growing
Child Evangelism Fellowship chapters, serving on
the board and training workers, but they need more workers as they add more clubs! It won't be easy, but someone needs to step forward to help anyway - proclaiming
God's word to the children of
St. Mary's County!
Check out the powerful message in this song by
Lanny Wolfe:
My House Is Full, But My
Fields Are
Empty
There is
peace and contentment in my
Father's house today,
Lots of food on His table and no one turned away.
There is singing and laughter as the hours pass by,
But a hush calms the singing as the Father sadly cries,
My house is full, but my field is empty,
Who will go and work for Me today.
It seems my children want to stay around my table,
But no one wants to work my fields,
No one wants to work my fields.
Push away from the table.
Look out through the windowpane,
Just beyond the house of plenty
Lies a field of golden grain.
And it's ripe unto harvest,
But the reapers, where are they?
In the house,
Oh, can't the children hear
the Father sadly say,
My house is full, but my field is empty,
Who will go and work for Me today.
It seems my children want to stay around my table,
But no one wants to work my fields,
No one wants to work my fields.
Words and Deeds were exactly how the people knew
Jesus was sent by God!
John 8:42-44
"42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent
Me...."
The
Hebrew word for rebellion and stubbornness means to "push out of the way" and God said its as bad as divination. The energy for divination comes from the devil, and it's not a fairy tale -
It's worship of demons and
It's Real! The main street pop culture is loaded with glorification of witchcraft and the occult:
Wizards of Waverly Place,
Harry Potter, etc.
Gal 5:20-21
20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,..."
Rev 22:10-15
Outside the gates are those who practice sorcery. The worship of idols is also found in the worship of
Mary, and the
Pope, raising up individuals to the status of gods, and the worship of wealth!
Matthew 6:24
"24 "No one can serve two masters..."
