She must have been all of 13 or 14 years old at the time and her name was Yoland Wolf. We lived on the same road at number 10 and her house was towards the end of the road near the railway lines and station. (Franz) I knew her and we were just friends amongst a bunch of others that also lived down the same street. A couple of years later I was the lead vocalist in our college choir at St. Benedict’s. She was a Good Shepherds or Holy Family student and sang in their choir.At the annual public schools choir concerts that we held in Colombo we took part and in 19 52 or 3 we won the first prize trophy for the boys choir, singing a negro ministerial SWING LOW SWEET CHARIOT. I was the lead singer at the time and when being presented with our trophy the lead judge made reference to the need for me to sing ministerial in the “black” folks spirit and not try to croon like Bing Crosby. Internationally known singer and performer Yolande Bavan was born in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). She started her career while still in her teens, touring Australia and Asia as a performer in the band led by renowned pianist Graeme Bell. Inspired by friend and mentor Billie Holiday, she developed her skills as a jazz artist. She replaced Annie Ross in the acclaimed award-winning jazz vocal trio, Lambert Hendricks and Ross. As Lambert Hendricks and Bavan, the group recorded three albums together. Yolande has had a long association with the American Foundation of the Blind Talking Books program administered by the U.S. Library of Congress. She has recorded over 200 books and has received the Alexander Scourby Narrator of the Year award for her work in this field. She has worked extensively in Europe and has appeared on the London stage and made several movies for British television. She also performed at Norway's Oslo Nye Theater, in a role that was specially created for her unique talents as an actress and a singer. In the United States, Yolande has appeared in several movies and television productions and continues her acting career on both in New York (on Broadway and Off) and in prestigious regional theaters across the country At Newport '63 is an album by the jazz vocalese group Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan recorded at the 1963 Newport Jazz Festival. The album features the group who had re-formed in 1963 featuring Dave Lambert and Jon Hendricks, with Yolande Bavan replacing Annie Ross who had left the group in 1962. The album was reissued in 1999 as part of RCA Victor's Classic Edition series, which featured improved audio quality and original cover art Andrew Hovan, writing for All About Jazz said that the album "...proves to be a rhapsodic moment captured on tape that at the time provided evidence that the loss of Annie Ross was anything but the demise of the group. Sure, Bavan didn't have the range that Ross did, but she was more than able to keep up with her two gentleman friends and add a different tonal color to the group to boot! ...Terry and Hawkins sound inspired and Mahones and the trio provide the kind of spunky support that spurs on such performances".[2] Hovan also described pianist Gildo Mahones as "tragically underrated" and trumpeter Clark Terry as sounding "tart and tasty" on "Sack O' Woe"
