Biographical Information For: Dr. William R. Morris, Ph.D. President of the Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin William R. Morris, Ph.D. is the president and CEO of the Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin, a graduate school of acupuncture and Chinese medicine in Austin, Texas. He was previously dean for seven years at Emperors College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in Santa Monica. Dr. Morris received his doctorate in Oriental medicine from Samra University of Oriental medicine in 1988. He also received a master of science in medical education from the University of Southern California in 2004, and a doctorate in acupuncture and Oriental medicine from Emperors College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in 2006. He completed a Ph.D. program in Transformative Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2008. Morris is responsible for the development of two doctorate of acupuncture and Oriental medicine programs, at his alma maters Emperors College and Samra University. Morris considers his most important education to be the work within family lineages of China. He spent five years studying dermatology under Neiqiang Gu in the Gu family external medicine lineage. He spent 7 years studying internal medicine and Chinese pulse diagnosis (his academic specialty) in the Ding family lineage. Morris has been responsible for a number of notable accomplishments since joining AOMA as president in 2005. These accomplishments include: •Achieving regional accreditation by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, becoming the nations first and only stand-alone, single-degree granting school of acupuncture and Chinese medicine to be regionally accredited, in December 2009. •Developing a new, larger headquarters campus, opening in April, 2011. •Creating collaborations with institutions of Western medicine, including the Seton Healthcare Network and Peoples Community Clinic. •Raising the international profile of AOMAs Southern Symposium, an acupuncture conference that now brings faculty from China and around the world, in its 10th year. •Expanding AOMAs infrastructure and services, including improved campus technology and a greatly expanded library (now believed to be the largest of any acupuncture and Chinese medicine college in the nation). Morris is a national leader of the movement to incorporate Chinese medicine into the American healthcare system. He is the former president of the American Association of Oriental Medicine (AAOM), a national professional association of licensed Oriental medical practitioners. He led the merger of the AAOM with the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Alliance, creating a single, national professional association: the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM), in Sacramento, California. An internationally recognized expert in Chinese pulse diagnosis, which an important piece of Chinese medical data collection, Morris speaks and leads seminars around the world and is the author of an upcoming book on the topic.
