Starchild Owner and designer Janet Middleton teamed up with textile artist Bobby Britnel to help Bobby's charity http://www.handsupforuganda.org/ for sustainable development in a very poor part of Uganda. The project involves using Ugandan bark cloth (yes tree bark made into a textile in a traditional way). Over 100 textile artists decorated the barkcloth in their unique own styles, then Janet transformed these peices into our Art shoes. Including well known textile artists Jan Beaney, Jean Draper, Jean Littlejohn, Ruth Issett, Kim Thittichai and many more. The completed project was exhibited at the NEC and also at Excel recently at the Creative Stitches and Embroidery show. http://www.creativestitchesshow.co.uk/london/ The final stage is to auction the shoes (all unique one off pieces) for the charity. Janet documented the project here https://www.facebook.com/barkcloth2artcloth

I used to have lots of cats. Ever since having kids, I really haven't been able to have the cats around any more. My mother-in-law inherited one of our cats though. His name is Hector. He's not the friendliest cat and he really doesn't tolerate children at all. He mostly hisses and hides, but he has bonded with my mother-in-law. She told me the other day that she was looking for a cat tree for him. My brother-in-law recently moved out of her house and she has room in his old bedroom to splurge on something just for Hector. Since Hector original was my cat, I took it upon myself to help her out. I have been searching ever since she mentioned it for a way to get a cat tree for her because I know that they can be very expensive. I also know that even inexpensive ones will be more than she is willing to spend. I came across Cozy Cat Furniture in my search. I love the name! It says exactly what you want when spoiling your cat. You want a piece of furniture that the cat will find to be cozy. Cats love cat trees. I think I have only ever known one cat that that didn't like heights. It is typically in their nature to want to be up off the ground, preferably as high as possible. Cats like to be able to see everything that is going on around them, but they also have to feel safe. Cat trees provide the vantage point they prefer and make it a lot harder for someone to hurt them. They have the added benefit of providing a cat with something to sharpen their claws on which also files them down so they don't hurt you as much. Hector doesn't have his front claws, but his back claws are seriously dangerous. We are hoping that climbing up a cat tree will help to file down the back nails since we cannot clip them. He's very skittish around everyone except my mother-in-law at this time, so clipping his nails is pretty much impossible. Assembling the cat tree was actually easier than I anticipated. I It's pretty self-explanatory that a bolt goes into the drilled holes, pushes through the cloth covering, and screws into whatever piece you are assembling. Thankfully it is self-explanatory because my only complaint about the cat tree is that the directions for assembly were REALLY REALLY tiny. My mother-in-law looked at them and she could not read them. She doesn't wear reading glasses but she couldn't read them. I showed them to my mom, and she couldn't read them with her reading glasses. I could barely read them. When you watch my video which shows the entire assembly of the cat tree, you will see that I only had one section that I had a tough time figuring out even when looking at the instructions. It took three tries to get the little ladder attached. Everything else was simple. So the only complaint that I have is that the instructions could have been printed with each diagram on a separate page so that they are easier to read. Even with this issue though, it didn't take too long to assemble. After assembling the cat tree, we put it in my mother-in-law's extra bedroom. Since Hector is skittish, we thought he would like it where he could still hide, but be up high and warm. After two days, he still hadn't gotten on it, so my mother-in-law moved it to her bedroom. She thought he might sleep on it since he likes to sleep at night in her room. He still wouldn't get on it. Then she moved it into her dining room (which is basically part of her living room and kitchen). She put catnip on it in hopes to get him on it. He still wouldn't. So we learned that Hector is not willing to expose himself to get on it. Hector obviously wasn't going to use it and my mother-in-law didn't have the room to keep waiting for him to try it out. Thankfully, my mom has bout 12 cats in her house, so we moved it to her house. Her cats are not even remotely skittish and love to get on EVERYTHING. We decided to move it in one piece to see how well it would hold up. It if looked like it wouldn't hold up, the plan was to take it apart. It moved very easily and held up great showing the good quality of the materials. Her cats loved it. At any given point you can find a couple of cats climbing on it, and even fighting over the perches. Know you cat or cats. This is a fantastic cat tree, but if your cat doesn't like to be up high or to be out where people can get to him, you probably don't want to get a really tall tree. Try a short one instead. They do make short ones. Like the Carpeted Cat Condo Furniture One Story. If you have multiple cats and the room for a bigger cat tree, you can try the Floor to Ceiling Cat Tower (I LOVE THIS!).

The Times of India 2013-05-03Barkcloth or bark cloth is a versatile material that was once common in Asia, Africa, Indonesia, and the Pacific. Barkcloth comes primarily from trees of the Moraceae family, including Broussonetia papyrifera, Artocarpus altilis, and Ficus. It is made by beating sodden strips of the fibrous inner bark of these trees into sheets, which are then finished into a variety of items. Many texts that mention "paper" clothing are actually referring to barkcloth.
Presently, barkcloth is a soft, thick, slightly textured fabric, so named because it has a rough surface like that of tree bark. This barkcloth is usually made of densely woven cotton fibers. Historically, the fabric has been used in home furnishings, such as curtains, drapery, upholstery, and slipcovers. It is often associated with 1940s-through-1960s home fashions, particularly in tropical, abstract, "atomic" and "boomerang" prints, the last two themes being expressed by images of atoms with neutrons whirling, and by the boomerang shape which was very popular in mid-century cocktail tables and fabrics. Waverly, a famed design house for textiles and wall coverings between 1923 and 2007, called their version of this fabric rhino cloth, possibly for the rough, nubbly surface. American barkcloth shot through with gold Lurex threads was called Las Vegas cloth, and contained as much as 65% rayon as well, making it a softer, more flowing fabric than the stiffer all-cotton rhino cloth or standard barkcloth.
