An online community is a virtual community whose members interact with each other primarily via the Internet. For many, online communities may feel like home, consisting of a “family of invisible friends." Those who wish to be a part of an online community usually have to become a member via a specific site and necessarily need an internet connection. An online community can act as an information system where members can post, comment on discussions, give advice or collaborate. Commonly, people communicate through social networking sites, chat rooms, forums, e-mail lists and discussion boards. People may also join online communities through video games, blogs and virtual worlds.
Constance Elise Porter of Notre Dame in a paper entitled A Typology of Virtual Communities: A Multi-Disciplinary Foundation for Future Research offers this definition: "a virtual community is defined as an aggregation of individuals or business partners who interact around a shared interest, where the interaction is at least partially supported and/or mediated by technology and guided by some protocols or norms."
(May 29, 2009) This talk focuses on ways to build members' commitment to online communities, based on theories of social identity and interpersonal bonds. It provides an overview of the relevant theory, describes results of 6 months of field research and examines different approaches to moderating the content in a group influence social identity and interpersonal bonds. Finally, it illustrates a number of design claims that translate the abstract principles from the social sciences into concrete design choices. When it comes to getting value to problems and life's challenges, Social Media sites are total rubbish. Online forums and Online Communities have been around since the dawn of the Internet - and that's where all the real value is. Why pretend a 140 character Tweet is of any benefit to you - that's a joke. Same for Facebook - most times you'll get back some smart 30 second Status Update that is ultimately meanless. Google+ is the same - great for pictures and quotes but not much more. Come join Online Communities who will support you as will their likeminded members. http://www.geekandjock.com/join - see you on the inside!
YouTuber, missrxrojas - aka Rosianna - discusses the way that the internet is altering our access to further discussion and learning. She argues that, whilst many consider youth to use the internet as distraction - it can also be a place for more intense engagement through online communities. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules ...

Big or small, public or private, the health of a community is measured by the participation and interaction of the people in it. This week, we have +Mark Timberlake, Director of the online marketing company,+SME Heroes as our special guest. Mark also runs a very successful Community at Online Video Educators & Entrepreneurs. (http://goo.gl/UqUJyW) Mark describes his Community as a place… “...that enables collaborative marketing efforts and help each other learn what marketing works and what doesn't.” One of the questions I'll be asking Mark is: Does it take the same skills to run a successful business as it does a Community?

There is abundant research on commons-based Peer Production communities, from free/open source software and wikis to fablabs and even community gardens. Research shows how these communities, regardless of their type, follow a deeply unequal distribution of effort (the 1-9-90 rule). This fact frequently generates feelings of frustration and guilt among contributors and users. How can we translate social research into evidence-based interventions to aid these communities? Which online tools would help reduce the invisible wall between contributors and users to facilitate participation? How can we ensure the tools we build respond to the communities' needs? Listen to the full audiobook: http://easyget.us/mabk/30/en/B01LXTV935/book The argument offered in this book is that new technology, as opposed to traditional media such as television, radio, and newspaper, is working against the national grain to weaken its imagined community. Online activities and communications between people and across borders suggest that digital media has strong implications for different articulations of identity and belongingness, which open new ways of thinking about the imagined community. The findings are based on transnational activities by Kurdish diaspora members across borders that have pushed them to rethink notions of belonging and identity. Through a multidisciplinary and comparative approach, and multifaceted (online-offline) methodologies, the book unve...

It counters contemporary moral panics about children's risk from dangerous strangers on-line, about corruption and lost innocence from adult-centred material on the web and about...
