The year 1994 was designated as the "International Year of the Family" and the "International Year of Sport and the Olympic Ideal" by the United Nations.
The last Russian troops were moved out of the Baltic states this year, in August.
A cave or cavern is a hollow place in the ground, especially a natural underground space large enough for a human to enter. Caves form naturally by the weathering of rock and often extend deep underground. The word cave can also refer to much smaller openings such as sea caves, rock shelters, and grottos.
Speleology is the science of exploration and study of all aspects of caves and the cave environment. Visiting or exploring caves for recreation may be called caving, potholing, or spelunking.
The formation and development of caves is known as speleogenesis. Caves are formed by various geologic processes and can be variable sizes. These may involve a combination of chemical processes, erosion from water, tectonic forces, microorganisms, pressure, and atmospheric influences.
It is estimated that the maximum depth of a cave cannot be more than 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) due to the pressure of overlying rocks. For karst caves the maximum depth is determined on the basis of the lower limit of karst forming processes, coinciding with the base of the soluble carbonate rocks.
Nicholas Edward "Nick" Cave (born 22 September 1957) is an Australian musician, songwriter, author, screenwriter, composer and occasional film actor. He is best known as the frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, established in 1983, a group known for its diverse output and ever-evolving line-up. Prior to this, he fronted the Birthday Party, one of the most extreme and confrontational post-punk bands of the early 1980s. In 2006, he formed the garage rock band Grinderman, releasing its debut album the following year.
Referred to as rock music's "Prince of Darkness", Cave's music is generally characterised by emotional intensity, a wide variety of influences, and lyrical obsessions with death, religion, love and violence.NME described him as "the grand lord of gothic lushness".
Cave has also worked as a composer for films, often in collaboration with fellow Australian musician Warren Ellis. Their films together include The Proposition (2005, based on a screenplay by Cave), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), The Road (2009) and Lawless (2012). Cave is the subject and co-writer of the semi-fictional "day in the life" documentary 20,000 Days on Earth (2014).
William Patrick "Billy" Corgan Jr. (born March 17, 1967) is an American musician, songwriter, producer, TV writer, and poet, best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and sole permanent member of The Smashing Pumpkins. Formed by Corgan and guitarist James Iha in Chicago, Illinois, in 1987, the band quickly gained steam with the addition of bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. The band's direction has largely been driven by Corgan through his confessional lyrics, grandiose production values, and virtuosic musical interplay. Three years after their first studio album release, Gish, the Smashing Pumpkins had transformed themselves into a major label success. Strong album sales and large-scale tours propelled the band's increasing fame in the 1990s until their break-up in 2000. Corgan started a new band called Zwan, and after their quick demise, he released a solo album (TheFutureEmbrace) and a collection of poetry (Blinking with Fists) before setting his sights on reforming Smashing Pumpkins.
While it doesn't really fit the 1990-2000 category, these type of idents lasted from the Bicentenary to at least the end of 1994. This particular ident reappeared in 2006 as part of the "Celebrating 50 Years" series of idents, and up until now, its only presence on YouTube was a screenshot featured during a signoff capture.
[Stereo feed] Nick Cave is somewhat bemused by the interview questions being fielded during the Lollapalooza tour. I would have loved to see what transpired after the cameras were turned off, judging from the way it quickly comes to an end - waved off, or some amusing mutterings?!

We board a flight from Amsterdam and in 9 hours we are in the Caribbean. After a layover of just a couple of hours on Curacao, we fly on to Jamaica. We land in Kingston around 11 am local time. The air is hot, but not too humid. We have a 3 hours layover, so we decide to get out of the airport and go have lunch in Port Royal, half an hour away on the coast. It's a bit of a ghost-town, once a very rich merchant harbor, destroyed at the end of the seventeenth century by a powerful earthquake. It looks l...
Published on Aug 1, 2015 In 1994, a group of scientists discovered a cave in Southern France perfectly preserved for over 20,000 years and containing the earliest known human paintings. Knowing the cultural significance that the Chauvet Cave holds, the French government immediately cut-off all access to it, save a few archaeologists and paleontologists. But documentary filmmaker, Werner Herzog, has been given limited access, and now we get to go inside examining beautiful artwork created by our ancient ancestors around 32,000 years ago. He asks questions to various historians and scientists about what these humans would have been like and trying to build a bridge from the past to the present. A new fossil discovery in the Cradle of Humankind, 50 kilometres from Johannesburg, has deepened the mystery around the origins of humankind. The discovery of a new human relative species, Homo naledi, was announced on Thursday by the University of the Witwatersrand, the National Geographic Society and the Department of Science and Technology/National Research Foundation. An international team of scientists took part in the find and have described it as the single largest fossil hominin (modern/extinct human species) find ever made in Africa. The Cradle of Humankind is a Unesco World Heritage Site known for its rich and diverse fossil record. Parts of 15 individuals of the Homo naledi species were recovered in an area not far from the Sterkfontein Caves, where human ancestors "Mrs Ples...
Sitting in a dark room
Falling to pieces
Try to find the right words
So you can sing along
Wear it like a tight noose
I don't wanna feel this
Might of made a wrong move
Now I'm all alone
I never know which way to go
A million thoughts I can't control
The city sleeps, but I can't close my eyes
California
California
Drowning in a bright room
Faking the feelings
Wonder if the right words
Are even here at all
I'm living through the hardest part
In a city full of fallen stars
A million dreams I can't close my eyes
California
