The Leopard and the Scrub Hare
Scrub hares are not known for their vast intelligence or ability to solve complex problems, a sentiment that's clearly at play here as a seemingly oblivious scrub hare happily hops up to Tingana, a rather large male leopard. Yet, one thing scrub hares do seem to possess is a "sixth sense" dedicated entirely to their survival and the detection of danger. Luckily, this hare managed to escape an untimely death, by a hair.

SCRUB HARE SNIFFS SLEEPING LEOPARD 😱
Not Nyeleti's proudest moment...
After a few very quiet hours spent with Nyeleti (a resident leopard in the Klaserie) as she lazed about, this peculiar moment occurred...
A scrub hare, with a possible death wish, hopped out of the bushes to give her a sniff. The lucky rodent then hopped off unharmed. Nyeleti woke up a few minutes later, blissfully unaware that she'd missed out on a tiny snack.
We'd love to know what was going through the scrub hares mind to make it do something like that... What do you think?

Cheetah cub learns how to hunt and kill a scrub hare
Cheetah Kweli is a fantastic mom. She caught a scrub hare but did not kill it, and is now teaching her little bouncy cub how to hunt. Difficult to watch as the poor scrub hare is being played with and fighting for its life, but a critical life lesson for the four month old cub. Filmed in the Masai Mara, with thanks to @KichecheCamps for their brilliant guiding as always, and to Barry Chapman for the incredible photo used as the thumbnail for this video.

Scrub Hare
We had a nice view of this Scrub Hare (Lepus saxatilis) towards the end of our first Nylsvley drive. This is one of two subspecies of hares in the Southern African region. The species is endemic to Southern Africa.
Although it is not listed as an endangered species the populations have declined significantly due mostly to habitat loss and hunting by local people for food and skins.

We are very pleased with the hand-raising of the leverets this year, as we have seen a huge success. We have been struggling to find information or studies on hand-raising Scrub hare leverets and their rehabilitation care.
We asked the other permitted rehabilitation centers for their advice and did some research on a very similar species called the Jackrabbit. Scrub Hares and Jackrabbits are leporids belonging to the genus Lepus. We found that besides the regions, these species share similarities of body size, diets, and habitats. We then adapted all the information given and research findings to put together a suitable diet, handling techniques and to ensure there is enough space in the enclosure for a happy hare. We found this has worked for FreeMe Wildlife. 🤗🎋

Scrub Hare (Lepus saxatilis) Video From Night Drives & Day Sightings In The Kruger Park
The Scrub Hare (Lepus saxatilis) is arguably the most common nocturnal animal in the Kruger National Park, and they can be found throughout the Kruger National Park, especially during the darker hours of the night. The best way to see a Scrub Hare is to go on a night drive, and many Kruger Park rangers will not stop for them, so I often request on night drives if the rangers can stop when there is a decent video or photographic opportunity of these cute little mammals. The Scrub Hare is almost a guarantee on any night drive, in any part of the Kruger National Park. They are almost like the Impala of the night, if I can put it into perspective for you.
You do not often see them in the day time because they hide/sleep in thickets, burrows or holes created by Aardvark. They are generally strictly nocturnal. Unfortunately their numbers are declining all over Southern Africa, and this being one of two true species of Hare found in Southern Africa, is quite sad. There has been extensive research done on the Scrub Hare, and for the time being their population is healthy, and we hope, happy.
The Scrub Hare is a cute little mammal, and can weigh anywhere between 1 and 5 kilograms, depending on the food opportunities and how healthy the area is. They only live to about 5 years in the wild, and in the Kruger National Park are a favourite prey item of many nocturnal predators, Owls, other birds of prey, certain reptiles, and even Leopard.
The Scrub Hares literally do "breed like rabbits", have a gestation period of only 38 days. This, and the supply of food (grazing), means they become abundant in certain areas of the Kruger National Park.
In the background of this video you can hear the beautiful call of the African Scops Owl, a widespread nocturnal Owl that occurs within the Kruger National Park.
We hope you enjoy the video! Please like and subscribe for more Wildlife and Kruger National Park videos and content!
