Tens of thousands of people converged on central London Sunday to protest against the government's treatment of its countryside constituency.
One of the main issues at stake was recent moves to outlaw the traditional country practice of fox hunting.
That decision seems to have enraged residents from as far as Scotland and Northern Ireland, who came to express their feelings.
But the affair remained calm, and marchers peacefully made their way from the Embankment to Hyde Park.
More than 100-thousand country dwellers converged on central London on Sunday to complain that they are being neglected by the British government.
When well-known sporting horseman Richard Meade lit this torch, once used for the Olympic games, the march officially began.
The marchers had plenty of grievances.
They were united in the desire to be heard by Prime Minister Tony Blair's "New Labour" government, which they feel is paying more attention to cosmopolitan London than to the rest of the country.
Their interests included the environment, the right to hunt foxes, government subsidies to farmers and complaints that the city is encroaching ever further into their domain.
Men dressed in their outdoor attire - red hunting jackets, fishing gear and hiking boots - looked a little out of place in the streets in the central London.

"I've come here really to protect my job, and the way of the countryside. We've been threatened by this bill as everybody knows, and we're going to stand up for our rights and the freedom of choice and everything in the countryside. We're not against the townies or anything like that, we're not against them looking at our countryside but we are against them telling us what to do with the countryside, that's what it's all about."

Public transport was flooded with people who came to town in trains, planes and automobiles.
Streets were barricaded off along the parade route, and traffic was rerouted.
But the protesters couldn't care less if there were transportation problems.
They were more concerned with getting their message across -- their desire to continue living a life without restrictions, spending their time doing what they enjoy and believe is their right.

"The freedom to do what I would like to do within the law, whenever I choose to do it - whether that is hunting or shooting or fishing I believe that is a democratic right, and that is why I am walking today."

The British government seems divided on the central issue of whether to ban fox hunting.
Although it has been a public supporter of banning fox hunting, Tony Blair's government will not supply parliamentary time to allow a private bill on the matter to become law.
And conspicuously absent from the march was Agriculture Minister Jack Cunningham.
He told Britain's Sunday Express newspaper he was worried the American gun lobby had promoted and supplied funds for the protest and as such he did not want to be a part of it.
This claim was emphatically denied by the organisers.

"Well I can tell you absolutely that is totally and utterly untrue. We do fund raise in America, like we fund raise in this country, through auctions and so on, but certainly not from the American gun lobby.''

If it is not, they will not take it lying down.

Brian May
Brian Harold May, CBE (born 19 July 1947) is an English musician, singer, songwriter and astrophysicist, best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen. He uses a home-built electric guitar, called the Red Special. His compositions for the band include "We Will Rock You", "Tie Your Mother Down", "I Want It All", "Fat Bottomed Girls", "The Prophet's Song", "Flash", "Hammer to Fall", "Save Me", "Who Wants to Live Forever" and "The Show Must Go On".
May was a co-founder of Queen with lead singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor, having previously performed with Taylor in the band Smile, which he had joined while he was at university. Within five years of their formation in 1970 and the recruitment of bass player John Deacon completing the lineup, Queen had become established as one of the biggest rock bands in Britain with the album A Night at the Opera and its single "Bohemian Rhapsody". From the mid-1970s until the early 1990s, Queen were an almost constant presence in the UK charts and played some of the biggest venues in the world, most notably giving an acclaimed performance at Live Aid in 1985. As a member of Queen, May became regarded as a virtuoso musician and he was identified with a distinctive sound created through his layered guitar work. Following the death of Mercury in 1991, Queen were put on hiatus for several years but were eventually reconvened by May and Taylor for further performances featuring other vocalists. Tens of thousands of people converged on central London Sunday to protest against the government's treatment of its countryside constituency.
One of the main issues at stake was recent moves to outlaw the traditional country practice of fox hunting.
That decision seems to have enraged residents from as far as Scotland and Northern Ireland, who came to express their feelings.
But the affair remained calm, and marchers peacefully made their way from the Embankment to Hyde Park.
More than 100-thousand country dwellers converged on central London on Sunday to complain that they are being neglected by the British government.
When well-known sporting horseman Richard Meade lit this torch, once used for the Olympic games, the march officially began.
The marchers had plenty of grievances.
They were united in the desire to be heard by Prime Minister Tony Blair's "New Labour" government, which they feel is paying more attention to cosmopolitan London than to the rest of the country.
Their interests included the environment, the right to hunt foxes, government subsidies to farmers and complaints that the city is encroaching ever further into their domain.
Men dressed in their outdoor attire - red hunting jackets, fishing gear and hiking boots - looked a little out of place in the streets in the central London.

"I've come here really to protect my job, and the way of the countryside. We've been threatened by this bill as everybody knows, and we're going to stand up for our rights and the freedom of choice and everything in the countryside. We're not against the townies or anything like that, we're not against them looking at our countryside but we are against them telling us what to do with the countryside, that's what it's all about."

Public transport was flooded with people who came to town in trains, planes and automobiles.
Streets were barricaded off along the parade route, and traffic was rerouted.
But the protesters couldn't care less if there were transportation problems.
They were more concerned with getting their message across -- their desire to continue living a life without restrictions, spending their time doing what they enjoy and believe is their right.

"The freedom to do what I would like to do within the law, whenever I choose to do it - whether that is hunting or shooting or fishing I believe that is a democratic right, and that is why I am walking today."

The British government seems divided on the central issue of whether to ban fox hunting.
Although it has been a public supporter of banning fox hunting, Tony Blair's government will not supply parliamentary time to allow a private bill on the matter to become law.
And conspicuously absent from the march was Agriculture Minister Jack Cunningham.
He told Britain's Sunday Express newspaper he was worried the American gun lobby had promoted and supplied funds for the protest and as such he did not want to be a part of it.
This claim was emphatically denied by the organisers.

"Well I can tell you absolutely that is totally and utterly untrue. We do fund raise in America, like we fund raise in this country, through auctions and so on, but certainly not from the American gun lobby.''

Touring as a front man, following Freddie’s passing, I was in complete denial of Queen, and regarded my new band as my future. I was blessed with the massive support of the late great Cozy Powell on drums. Here we see Cozy in fabulous form. Of course, when Ritchie Blackmore’s band, Rainbow, recorded the monumental version of this song that charted in 1979, Cozy had been the drummer, and for me, covering this track live was a kind of homage to Cozy. The vocal is almost impossibly rangey, and I made it a personal crusade to work on my voice, extending my range so I could sing it. The band was a dream outfit for me … with already legendary heavy rock stalwart Neil Murray on bass, who had worked with Cozy (and my friend Tony Iommi) in one of the incarnations of Black Sabbath, long-time Queen collaborator Spike Edney on keys, newly recruited Jamie Moses on guitar, who remains a great friend to this day, and two stunning backing vocalists, Catherine Porter and Shelley Preston. 720p is a high definition video standard (TVs that could play this were sold as 'HD ready' some years ago; it’s one step down from 1080p/1080i – known as 'Full HD'). The number 720 signifies the 720 horizontal scan lines of image display resolution (also known as 720 pixels of vertical resolution), while the letter p stands for progressive scan (ie non-interlaced). Those of us who grew up in the 1960s and 70s watched TV with a resolution of 405 lines vertically; this standard was gradually phased out in the 80’s, and 625 became the only standard available in 1985.

We caught up with May and his longtime guitar tech Pete Malandrone on Queen's summer tour with Adam Lambert to talk about his minimal effects, Vox amps, and of course, the Red Special. Brian May's entire career has been almost exclusively spent with the guitar that he and his father built in 1964. Note from Brian :
Mark initially came to me with an idea for making audio cassettes of guitarists explaining their techniques. It seemed a good one and we arranged to meet and make it happen. But I said ... if we’re going to the trouble of recording this stuff, why not film it as well, and make it into a Video Cassette ?! So we made a ‘pilot’ video, and people liked it, and this became the template for a whole collection of videos which, I think, stand up very well to this day.

The portfolio debuted with a wide-ranging group of players including Steve Lukather of Toto, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Al McKay (Earth, Wind & Fire) guitarist Albert Lee, and acclaimed guitarist/educator Wolf Marshall.
In this video, Brian discusses his equipment and techniques, and demonstrates a number of his guitar solos. He covers both famous and lesser known Queen songs, including Brighton Rock, Tie Your Mother Down, Somebody To Love, It's Late, Dead On Time, Put Out The Fire, It's A Hard Life, Keep Yourself Alive, Jesus, Father To Son and Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
The programme was produced and directed by Mark Freed and Robert Decker, and recorded at Sarm West, London, England. The video was originally released in 1983 and later reissued in 1993/4.
Note from Brian :
Mark initially came to me with an idea for making audio cassettes of guitarists explaining their techniques. It seemed a good one and we arranged to meet and make it happen. But I said ... if we’re going to the trouble of recording this stuff, why not film it as well, and make it into a Video Cassette ?! So we made a ‘pilot’ video, and people liked it, and this became the template for a whole collection of videos which, I think, stand up very well to this day.
Maybe we should do an update ?!

If there was a Mount Rushmore of British guitar heroes, undoubtedly, Queen's Brian May would grace that mountain. We caught up with May and his longtime guitar tech Pete Malandrone on Queen's summer tour with Adam Lambert to talk about his minimal effects, Vox amps, and of course, the Red Special.
Brian May's entire career has been almost exclusively spent with the guitar that he and his father built in 1964. "Red Special" is a three-pickup, double-cutaway guitar with Burns pickups and a very unique (at the time) switching system that allows May to cover a huge range of tones. According to May, everything on the guitar is still original from when it was built except for the tuning pegs and the rollers on the bridge.
During a typical show, May switches guitars during two songs. "Fat Bottomed Girls," which is in dropped-D tuning, is played with a Red Special replica that's green and was built by British luthier Andrew Guyton.
For "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," he uses another Guyton Red Special replica with the addition of an f-hole—which was featured on May's original designs for the guitar— a non-trem bridge, and an internal piezo pickup that is utilized during the opening parts of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." All his guitars are strung with Optima 24 Carat Gold .009--.042 strings.

RT caught up with legendary Queen guitarist Brian May, who also happens to be an astrophysicist, after a symposium of astronomers in the Canary Islands to talk about links between music and science, God, the universe and the mystery of death. May says being both a musician and a scientist gives him an interesting observation point to view both. "I love pure science and I love pure music. They are not the same for sure, but certainly throughout the centuries there have been people, who were immersed in both of them, from Leonardo da Vinci to Patrick Moore. Maybe it's an abstraction thing, maybe people who like those things, don't like the clutter of the world we live in. They just like to find the essence of life," he told RT. As a man of art, May has insights into life, which he has to put under question as a man of science, he says. "If you say 'there is no God,' where is evidence there is no God? You can say 'I don't know.' Being an agnostic to me is a scientific point of view, which is supportable. In my experience, I felt at times that there is a God of some kind. I don't subscribe to any organized religion -- that's a different matter. But if there is a God, we have very little idea of what that God may be. That's inherent in what we are," he said. Such limits of perception actually give hope at certain points of life, for instance, when you think of what come after it is over, May said. "I'm inclined to think that out view of the universe is very simplified. A beetle crawling over a piece of paper has a very limited view of the universe. I think we also have a limited view. So this existence that we know may be just a very small part of the whole picture. I'm not counting on it, because maybe at the end of your life -- that's it. I don't know. One thing is certain: you can't use it as an excuse. You can't say: 'this life is very bad, but the next one will be OK.' You have to make the best of what you are," he said. May, who contemplated suicide at one point in his life, says taking your life is very self-centered and thinking of people who love you and count on you helps in beating such thoughts. "In a sense it's a very selfish thing to kill yourself, because you make so much mess. You do terrible things to the people around you. I did check myself into a depression clinic, which was actually the best thing I ever did, because it was a new start. It was like re-starting your car. I had to ditch my preconceptions, and that work certainly gave me new energy. I realized that if I did not deal with the depression, I was of no use to anybody. It's the same kind of logic as not killing yourself," he said.
