Govan, Montana After a sizeable sandbank was found in the region of Lincoln County, Washington state, Govan was soon a boomtown for people looking to extract themselves some sand. A railway for Central Washington was soon carved into the landscape, and Govan as a town was soon born. However, its railway history is not what the ghost town is well known for. It’s also apparently been a site of unsolved murders after its opening at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century. In the late 1930s, a fire had destroyed its business district, with its population dwindling soon after, until there wasn’t anyone left. 8. Bodie, California Near the Sierra Nevada mountain range is the famous ghost town of Bodie, California. And just so you’re aware, mining of gold was one of the reasons the town even started. Bet you couldn’t have seen that one a mile away, could you? The area was initially a mining camp that opened in 1859. Named after W.S. Bodey, a prospector from the East Coast, he ended up succumbing to a blizzard before the town named after him entered its boomtown era. By 1915, Bodie was considered a ghost town, though pockets of people still resided in the area. It is now what is called an authentic Wild West ghost town, as of 1961, bringing in lots of curious visitors every year. 7. Belmont, Nevada Along route 82, you’ll come across the abandoned town of Belmont, Nevada, a historic site according to the National Register of Historic places. The a few buildings have made it through the 150 or so years since the establishment of Belmont as a town, although many others look ruinous. 6. Cahawba, Alabama Whether you spell it with a W or not, Cahawba remains a significant historic site and a popular ghost town. Lying to the southwest of the town of Selma, Cahawba was at once the state capital of Alabama. It was during the era of the Postbellum did Cahawba ultimately see its demise, with many moving away during the South’s Reconstruction and by the year 1903, many of the buildings in the town had been moved, leaving a barren looking ghost town in its wake. 5. North Brother, Island So you’ve heard of ghost towns, which are unsettling enough. But this is a whole island abandoned, which is 10 times more creepy because it’s essentially in the middle of water and would be harder to escape if something scary happens. North Brother Island is the home of what’s left of the Riverside Hospital. It’s now the location of a bird sanctuary, which is great and less creepy for bird enthusiasts--and not so much for people who watched the film The Birds and were traumatized. 4. Centralia, Pennsylvania Not only is Centralia, Pennsylvania creepy, it’s also pretty dangerous. Centralia is considered a “near ghost town” meaning it’s pretty much hanging by a thread, with only 10 residents part of the population as of 2010. Centralia is known for its mine fires, which have been burning since 1962. No one knows who started the fire or even how, but since it was a place where coal was once mined, it makes sense smoke still emits from the ghost town. 3. Rhyolite, Nevada These ghostly statues that kinda resemble the Nazgul from Lord of the Rings can be found in the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada, which is located 120 miles outside of the bustling city of Las Vegas and quite close to Death Valley. Founded in 1905, the mine at Rhyolite closed soon after, with the rest of the town with it by 1920. Described by some as a ghost version of The Last Supper, these white statues were created by Belgian artists who went all the way to Death Valley in the 80s for artistic inspiration. 2. Rodney, Mississippi Rodney was once an important city in the south, founded back in 1828. And talk about jilted. The town of Rodney nearly became the capital of Mississippi before the territory was officially a state. The buildings have clearly fallen into disrepair for the past century, the town used to be located near the Mississippi River, but along with not being chosen as the capital and then ultimately abandoned, this old town can’t seem to catch a break since it’s now famously not located near the River anymore. Boston Mills, Ohio You probably have heard it more famously referred to as Helltown, Ohio. It’s among one of the creepiest ghost towns in all of America, said to be location for hauntings and satanic rituals and gatherings. If you ever come across that road closed sign, do yourself a favor and just go the other way. Founded in 1806, it seemed Gerald Ford was what had led to the closing down of the town after he signed a bill to enforce the National Park Service’s plans to make it a national park. Houses and establishments were done away with, and after a chemical spill discovered in the 80s, it became one of America’s most famous ghost towns.
