The Pula Arena is the name of the amphitheatre located in Pula, Croatia. The Arena is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre to have four side towers and with all three Roman architectural orders entirely preserved. It was constructed in 27 BC - 68 AD and is among the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the World. A rare example among the 200 Roman surviving amphitheatres, it is also the best preserved ancient monument in Croatia.
The arena that towers over Pula, Croatia is a marvel of ancient engineering.
The Pula Arena is amidst the world's two hundred Roman style amphitheatres left standing, and numbers among the grandest.
The arena's highest walls rise to a staggering almost one hundred feet.
Constructed mostly from limestone, the amphitheatre has nearly one hundred and fifty identical arches.
The arena was once home to gladiator's fights, medieval festivals, and is currently suited to stage concerts and theatre productions.
Estimated to be nearly 2,000 years old, the Pula Arena remains one of Croatia's most prolific sites.

Roman Amphitheatre at El Djem in Tunisia.
"El Djem is famous for its amphitheatre (often incorrectly called "a coliseum"), capable of seating 35,000 spectators. Only Rome's Colosseum (about 45,000 spectators) and the ruined theatre of Capua are larger. The amphitheatre at El Djem was built by the Romans under proconsul Gordian, who was acclaimed Emperor at Thysdrus, around 238 and was probably mainly used for gladiator shows and chariot races.
Until the 17th century it remained more or less whole. From then on its stones were used for building the nearby village of El Djem and transported to the Great Mosque in Kairouan, and at a tense moment during struggles with the Ottomans, the Turks used cannons to flush rebels out of the amphitheatre.
The ruins of the amphitheatre were declared a World Heritage Site in 1979."

Roman Amphitheatre in Chester, England.
The largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain, used for entertainment and military training by the 20th Legion, based at the fortress of 'Deva' (Chester).
Excavations by English Heritage and Chester City Council in 2004-5 revealed two successive stone-built amphitheatres with wooden seating.
The first included access to the upper tiers of seats via stairs on the rear wall, as at Pompeii, and had a small shrine next to its north entrance. The second provided seat access via vaulted stairways. The two buildings differed from each other and from all other British amphitheatres, underlining the importance of Roman Chester.(from English Heritage review)

A first glimpse at the reconstruction of Chester's Roman amphitheatre. This animation was created from the Lightwave assets and rendered in Element3D, primarily to demonstrate the work to an audience at a conference in Rome during early March 2016. Following the conference and further discussion, additional work is being done to elements of the structure. The final reconstructions will not be available until publication of the first volume of the Chester Amphitheatre report in 2017, but this is to give an early glimpse of how we think it looked in the Third Century.
The analysis and interpretation was a collaboration between Tony Wilmott of Historic England and Julian Baum of Take 27 Ltd. The 3D modelling and animation software Lightwave, along with LWCAD, played a key part in analysing the data and allowing both a deeper understanding of the excavated and map data, as well as reconstructions of the amphitheatre and its immediate environs.

This is our Pink Floyd cover band, "Pink Tones" playing our version of Atom Heart Mother absolutely live at the 2000 year old "Segobriga Roman Amphitheatre", one hour from Madrid (Spain).
We wanted to do something with the "live at Pompeii" feeling but also different. Something that goes further than the usual tribute band stuff and add something else.
With lots of respect to the originals, but also letting us go with ideas, and the will to do something different, this is our homage to a great song, a great band, and, because of the way the song perfectly fits that ancient, haunting place, a tribute to that lost civilization.
We played the song 4 times, around noon, and each time the cameras were set in different places, in order to have as many video positions as possible and at the same time, not to see the camera men in the final video. If you see small inconsistencies between image and audio it's because we used video from all takes, but the audio is exclusively the Take 3. We used absolutely no EQ nor compression or any treatment, it sounded that good as it was.
Before someone asks, the guitar has no mic in front of the WEM cabinet because it's recorded directly through an Axe-Fx unit.
Well, we hope you like this, it was a magical day, full of joy, illusion and hard work, and absolutely soaked in a "big family" vibe, with lots of friends that got involved purely for love to art, just the way we imagine these kind of things were done back in the 70s.

Roman amphitheatres are amphitheatres – large, circular or oval open-air venues with raised seating – built by the Ancient Romans. They were used for events such as gladiator combats, chariot races, venationes (animal slayings) and executions. About 230 Roman amphitheatres have been found across the area of the Roman Empire. Early amphitheatres date from the Republic Period, though they became more monumental during the Imperial Era.
Amphitheatres are distinguished from circuses; from hippodromes, which were usually rectangular and built mainly for racing events; and from stadia, built for athletics. But several of these terms have at times been used for one and the same venue. The word amphitheatrum means "theatre all around", i.e., a circular theatre, as distinguished from the traditional semicircular Roman theatres.
It is uncertain when and where the first amphitheatres were built. There are records attesting to temporary wooden amphitheatres built in the Forum Romanum for gladiatorial games from the second century BC onwards, and these may be the origin of the architectural form later expressed in stone. In his Historia Naturalis, Pliny the Elder claims that the amphitheatre was invented during the spectacles of Gaius Scribonius Curio in 52 BC, where two wooden semicircular theatres were rotated towards each other to form one circular amphitheatre, while spectators were still seated in the two halves. But while this may be the origin of the architectural term amphitheatrum, it cannot be the origin of the architectural concept, since earlier stone amphitheatres, known as spectacula or amphitheatra, have been found.

The Roman fortress at ISCA was one of the most important military sites in Britain under the Roman Empire. It was the home of the 2nd Augustan Legion of 6,000 soldiers and horsemen. The amphitheatre was built almost 2000 years ago and was believed to have been used for for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building was in use for approx 200 years after completion. Having received across the board critical acclaim for their recent LP 'Cold Spring Fault Less Youth', Mount Kimbie have become a force to be reckoned with and an incredible live prospect. Also confirmed to perform live is London four piece Portico Quartet, who have grown from strength to strength after their debut album 'Knee-deep in the North Sea' was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2008.Creating unique flavours of sound through the use of the Hang Drum, Portico Quartet have become an admired live act pushing boundaries with their live show. Ghanaian- British Andrew Ashong will also be performing an innovative live set. After releasing the incredible 'Flowers' last year, a collaboration with the imitable Theo Parrish and winner of 'Track Of The Year' at The Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards, Andrew Ashong has confirmed his status as a one to watch for 2013. Bringing his live show to Pula, Ashong is sure to deliver an interesting and memorable performance. Still to be announced is the evening's special guest headliner, who for contractual reasons can't be announced just yet. However what we can say is that this superbly talented electronica artist will be bringing their smoothly textured soundscapes masterfully translated into a multiple piece live show, in what will be an entirely memorable performance and a perfect fit for a venue of this magnitude. We have decided to keep the ticket price as low as possible in order to encourage as many festival goers and Pula locals to enjoy an amazing concert at such a historical venue; with standard tickets priced at just £15/€16. There are also a limited number of VIP tickets available for the seated area of the Arena for only £3/€4 more per ticket. Roman Amphitheatre in Chester, England. The largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain, used for entertainment and military training by the 20th Legion, based at the fortress of 'Deva' (Chester). Excavations by English Heritage and Chester City Council in 2004-5 revealed two successive stone-built amphitheatres with wooden seating. The first included access to the upper tiers of seats via stairs on the rear wall, as at Pompeii, and had a small shrine next to its north entrance. A first glimpse at the reconstruction of Chester's Roman amphitheatre. This animation was created from the Lightwave assets and rendered in Element3D, primarily to demonstrate the work to an audience at a conference in Rome during early March 2016. Following the conference and further discussion, additional work is being done to elements of the structure. The final reconstructions will not be available until publication of the first volume of the Chester Amphitheatre report in 2017, but this is to give an early glimpse of how we think it looked in the Third Century. Roman Amphitheatre in Chester, England.
The largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain, used for entertainment and military training by the 20th Legion, based at the fortress of 'Deva' (Chester).
Excavations by English Heritage and Chester City Council in 2004-5 revealed two successive stone-built amphitheatres with wooden seating.
The first included access to the upper tiers of seats via stairs on the rear wall, as at Pompeii, and had a small shrine next to its north entrance. The second provided seat access via vaulted stairways. The two buildings differed from each other and from all other British amphitheatres, underlining the importance of Roman Chester.(from English Heritage review)

A first glimpse at the reconstruction of Chester's Roman amphitheatre. This animation was created from the Lightwave assets and rendered in Element3D, primarily to demonstrate the work to an audience at a conference in Rome during early March 2016. Following the conference and further discussion, additional work is being done to elements of the structure. The final reconstructions will not be available until publication of the first volume of the Chester Amphitheatre report in 2017, but this is to give an early glimpse of how we think it looked in the Third Century.
The analysis and interpretation was a collaboration between Tony Wilmott of Historic England and Julian Baum of Take 27 Ltd. The 3D modelling and animation software Lightwave, along with LWCAD, played a key part in analysing the data and allowing both a deeper understanding of the excavated and map data, as well as reconstructions of the amphitheatre and its immediate environs.

This is our Pink Floyd cover band, "Pink Tones" playing our version of Atom Heart Mother absolutely live at the 2000 year old "Segobriga Roman Amphitheatre", one hour from Madrid (Spain).
We wanted to do something with the "live at Pompeii" feeling but also different. Something that goes further than the usual tribute band stuff and add something else.
With lots of respect to the originals, but also letting us go with ideas, and the will to do something different, this is our homage to a great song, a great band, and, because of the way the song perfectly fits that ancient, haunting place, a tribute to that lost civilization.
We played the song 4 times, around noon, and each time the cameras were set in different places, in order to have as many video positions as possible and at the same time, not to see the camera men in the final video. If you see small inconsistencies between image and audio it's because we used video from all takes, but the audio is exclusively the Take 3. We used absolutely no EQ nor compression or any treatment, it sounded that good as it was.
Before someone asks, the guitar has no mic in front of the WEM cabinet because it's recorded directly through an Axe-Fx unit.
Well, we hope you like this, it was a magical day, full of joy, illusion and hard work, and absolutely soaked in a "big family" vibe, with lots of friends that got involved purely for love to art, just the way we imagine these kind of things were done back in the 70s.

The amphitheatre was built almost 2000 years ago and was believed to have been used for for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building was in use for approx 200 years after completion.

Showcasing sounds across the deeper end of the electronic spectrum and taking place in one of the six largest Roman amphitheatres in the world, the remarkable venue will host a selection of artists that seamlessly fit within the ancient walls of this utterly unique and beautiful setting.
Confirmed to perform live is Warp's finest electronic duo Mount Kimbie. Having received across the board critical acclaim for their recent LP 'Cold Spring Fault Less Youth', Mount Kimbie have become a force to be reckoned with and an incredible live prospect.
Also confirmed to perform live is London four piece Portico Quartet, who have grown from strength to strength after their debut album 'Knee-deep in the North Sea' was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2008.Creating unique flavours of sound through the use of the Hang Drum, Portico Quartet have become an admired live act pushing boundaries with their live show.
Ghanaian- British Andrew Ashong will also be performing an innovative live set. After releasing the incredible 'Flowers' last year, a collaboration with the imitable Theo Parrish and winner of 'Track Of The Year' at The Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards, Andrew Ashong has confirmed his status as a one to watch for 2013. Bringing his live show to Pula, Ashong is sure to deliver an interesting and memorable performance.
Still to be announced is the evening's special guest headliner, who for contractual reasons can't be announced just yet. However what we can say is that this superbly talented electronica artist will be bringing their smoothly textured soundscapes masterfully translated into a multiple piece live show, in what will be an entirely memorable performance and a perfect fit for a venue of this magnitude.
We have decided to keep the ticket price as low as possible in order to encourage as many festival goers and Pula locals to enjoy an amazing concert at such a historical venue; with standard tickets priced at just £15/€16. There are also a limited number of VIP tickets available for the seated area of the Arena for only £3/€4 more per ticket. This area provides the best views across the Ampitheatre, as well as a drink delivery service -- so no need to stand at the bar. All VIP ticket holders also have access to the standing area.

After releasing the incredible 'Flowers' last year, a collaboration with the imitable Theo Parrish and winner of 'Track Of The Year' at The Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards, Andrew Ashong has confirmed his status as a one to watch for 2013. Bringing his live show to Pula, Ashong is sure to deliver an interesting and memorable performance.
Still to be announced is the evening's special guest headliner, who for contractual reasons can't be announced just yet. However what we can say is that this superbly talented electronica artist will be bringing their smoothly textured soundscapes masterfully translated into a multiple piece live show, in what will be an entirely memorable performance and a perfect fit for a venue of this magnitude.
We have decided to keep the ticket price as low as possible in order to encourage as many festival goers and Pula locals to enjoy an amazing concert at such a historical venue; with standard tickets priced at just £15/€16. There are also a limited number of VIP tickets available for the seated area of the Arena for only £3/€4 more per ticket. This area provides the best views across the Ampitheatre, as well as a drink delivery service -- so no need to stand at the bar. All VIP ticket holders also have access to the standing area.
