Afghanistan is the world’s biggest exporter of black-market opium from which heroin is made. It’s a multi-billion dollar business, responsible for around a hundred thousand deaths every year and it’s a major source of income for terrorists. RT Doc travelled to the poppy fields where death is harvested to find out why no one can put a stop to this deadly trade.
When it comes to heroin, a non-intervention policy is still going strong in Afghanistan where over 90% of the world’s black market opium is produced. Most finds its way onto the international drug market and the profits fund organized crime and terrorist groups like ISIS, which is growing in strength here.
The dealers and manufacturers aren’t hard to find: they live in luxurious houses, have fields blooming with poppies and sell their narcotic wares in broad daylight. Even so, they still manage to evade arrest. Poppy fields are destroyed and drugs seized but it’s only ever the middle men who are punished, not the drug lords. There’s been a NATO military presence in the country for 14 years now but still, drugs production continues to grow.
Local people suffer from the drug business too, around 18% of the capital’s population are drug addicts. The places where drugs are sold and used are well known but the police are powerless to act. Mafia wars drive civilians from their land in the southern regions, forcing them into refugee camps in their own country. Opium growers get rich by plunging fellow citizens into the depths of misery.
RT Doc’s investigative team visited Afghanistan to document the Police’s losing battle against opium producers and its effect on the rest of the country. They talk to police officers, drug users and opium growers in search of a fuller picture and to ask why this massive and life-destroying industry continues to flourish.

Opium is called “Afeem” in India and it is obtained from poppy plant- scientifically known as Papaver somniferum. Opium is dried latex obtained from the opium poppy i.e. fruit of this plant. Seeds of poppy, locally known as Khas-khas are sowed in the month of November. By February, the poppy plants are fruited enough to yield opium. At this time, farmers do rituals and pray for the good yield, and then collection of opium starts. Two special handmade instruments are used for opium collection “Nakhi” and “Sarapla”. This video shows how do the opium farmers harvest their opium crop.

Cette chanson a été créée en 1930 par Charlys (musique et paroles) et Guy d'Abzac (paroles) ; les soldats de l'infanterie de marine en ont fait un chant militaire, atypique par son sujet. Le ton mélancolique et désabusé rappelle certains autres chants (tel que Marie-Dominique). Durant la guerre d'Indochine, des soldats, loin de la mère patrie - ils partaient alors pour trois années - cédant parfois aux "merveilleux mensonges" promis dans les fumeries d'opium.
Jacques Dutronc a, à la fin des années 80, enregistré une version de ce chant ; on en trouve une version enregistrée en public dans l'ablum enregistré au Casino de Paris.

Opium (poppy tears, lachryma papaveris) is the dried latex obtained from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum).[4][5] Opium latex contains approximately 12% of the analgesic alkaloid morphine, which is processed chemically to produce heroin and other synthetic opioids for medicinal use and for the illegal drug trade. The latex also contains the closely related opiates codeine and thebaine and non-analgesic alkaloids such as papaverine and noscapine. The traditional, labor-intensive method of obtaining the latex is to scratch ("score") the immature seed pods (fruits) by hand; the latex leaks out and dries to a sticky yellowish residue that is later scraped off, and dehydrated. The word "meconium" (derived from the Greek for "opium-like", but now used to refer to infant stools) historically referred to related, weaker preparations made from other parts of the opium poppy or different species of poppies.[6]
The production of opium itself has not changed since ancient times. Through selective breeding of the Papaver somniferum plant, the content of the phenanthrene alkaloids morphine, codeine, and to a lesser extent thebaine, has been greatly increased. In modern times, much of the thebaine, which often serves as the raw material for the synthesis for hydrocodone, hydromorphone, and other semisynthetic opiates, originates from extracting Papaver orientale or Papaver bracteatum.
Opium for illegal use is often converted into heroin, which is less bulky,[citation needed] making it easier to smuggle, and which multiplies its potency to approximately twice that of morphine.

In a small village in northeastern Afghanistan,
it's estimated more than half the residents are addicted to opium, Even the youngest of children are given the drug
In a village in northeastern Afghanistan, it's just past eight in the morning at Islam Begs house, and the family is already curled up around a burning opium pipe
They include his one-year-old grandson
No one looks twice as his aunt blows the opium at him
It's a common practice here, resulting in rampant child addiction. Residents argue there is no alternative because there is no medicine: there is one drug and that's opium´
Islam Beg at age 65 admits he's ashamed of what he's become.
Islam Beg, drug addict "I started taking a smoke until I got addicted to this (opium). I lost my property, I lost my strength, my bravery and now I am laying here with an empty stomach."
Beg's forefathers used to own much of the land in the village and he once had 1,200 sheep. But they were sold, and then the land sold, to pay for opium.
The pipe is passed around and they all take turns to fill their lungs with this deadly substance.
This family of five is typical of the growing number of narcotics addicts in Afghanistan. There are an estimated 150,000 opium addicts and a further 50,000 heroin addicts here
Decades of war and poverty have instilled a sense of hopelessness in many people here, making narcotics an easydestructive way to deal with an often grim reality
This village Sarab has a population of fewer than 2,000, and half are already addicts
Afghanistan has few drug treatment services availablecountry-wide, there are fewer than 200 beds total for drug rehabilitation
In small villages like this everyone is linked and every family sinks further and further into debt
Jan Begum, drug addict "All I had I lost buying this (opium) you can see nothing has been left for me. I have been sick for the last six months and I don't have money to go to the doctor, all I had I spent on this (opium)."

Beg is hopeful that his grandchildren will escape his fate, he believes they're not yet addicted

The word "meconium" (derived from the Greek for "opium-like", but now used to refer to infant stools) historically referred to related, weaker preparations made from other parts of the opium poppy or different species of poppies.[6] The production of opium itself has not changed since ancient times. Through selective breeding of the Papaver somniferum plant, the content of the phenanthrene alkaloids morphine, codeine, and to a lesser extent thebaine, has been greatly increased. In modern times, much of the thebaine, which often serves as the raw material for the synthesis for hydrocodone, hydromorphone, and other semisynthetic opiates, originates from extracting Papaver orientale or Papaver bracteatum. Opium for illegal use is often converted into heroin, which is less bulky,[citation needed] making it easier to smuggle, and which multiplies its potency to approximately twice that of morphine. August 10, 2009 In a small village in northeastern Afghanistan, it's estimated more than half the residents are addicted to opium, Even the youngest of children are given the drug In a village in northeastern Afghanistan, it's just past eight in the morning at Islam Begs house, and the family is already curled up around a burning opium pipe They include his one-year-old grandson No one looks twice as his aunt blows the opium at him It's a common practice here, resulting in rampant child addiction. Residents argue there is no alternative because there is no medicine: there is one drug and that's opium´ Islam Beg at age 65 admits he's ashamed of what he's become. Islam Beg, drug addict "I started taking a smoke until I got addicted to this (opium). I lost my property, I lost my strength, my bravery and now I am laying here with an empty stomach." Beg's forefathers used to own much of the land in the village and he once had 1,200 sheep. But they were sold, and then the land sold, to pay for opium. The pipe is passed around and they all take turns to fill their lungs with this deadly substance. This family of five is typical of the growing number of narcotics addicts in Afghanistan. There are an estimated 150,000 opium addicts and a further 50,000 heroin addicts here Decades of war and poverty have instilled a sense of hopelessness in many people here, making narcotics an easydestructive way to deal with an often grim reality This village Sarab has a population of fewer than 2,000, and half are already addicts Afghanistan has few drug treatment services availablecountry-wide, there are fewer than 200 beds total for drug rehabilitation In small villages like this everyone is linked and every family sinks further and further into debt Jan Begum, drug addict "All I had I lost buying this (opium) you can see nothing has been left for me. I have been sick for the last six months and I don't have money to go to the doctor, all I had I spent on this (opium)." Plot: Hercules is finally a happy family man with his wife Deianeira, two young sons Aeson and Clonus, daughter Ilea and in-living centaur Nessus. When a trickster lures men to fight -using a fake- Eryx the Boxer, they are slain, so Hercules is called and slays the giant, but to Zeus' disappointment loses his temper when Hera shows by a peacock feather to be behind it again, and wrecks her temple. Nessus grumbles he's tired of the Herc-idolatry. The next call for help is made by Iole, from a city where people are killed by the fume from an entrance to the underworld which opened the earth there. He goes, but when an old woman recognizes the pendant the messenger gave Deianeira, saying it proves she belongs to maidens trained so well in the art of seduction they can get any man in their power, she finally believes jealous Nessus' warnings not to trust her with Hercules; they catch up with him, but he convinces her to trust him, then Nessus tries to rape her and dies cursing Hera's failure to protect him and showing Deianeira the cloak his blood drenches can secure his love again. They continue their journey, discussing their past and popularly exaggerated reputations. Iole demonstrates how her power can work for good, stopping an apparently ranging men from causing a major fight be touching him and diagnosing he just burnt his mouth at hot soup. She also stops Hercules killing Lycastus from her village, who attacks anyone he considers a rival for Iole. When they arrive at the village, the hell-mouth is stronger then ever. The half-god hesitates to believe his father Zeus, who answers reluctantly he can die, yet turns Ioles desperate plea -offering herself- down but when the cloak drenched in Nessus' blood nearly kills him as he puts it on setting out to return home and displays Hera's peacock-sign, he jumps into the underworld. He forces the ferryman Charon to bring him over the river Styx. Back home, a messenger tells his wife Deianeira the cloak killed him, driving her to despair as she gave it to him. Numerous monsters attack Hercules, but fail to stop him, nor can a hosts of villains he killed and cleverly makes fight each-other. The centaur Nessus is worse: he shows him Deianeira has committed suicide and is in Elysium, but enjoys Hercules' torment enough to grant him a 'last view', so he can jump into the magical image. There Hades tells him she is happy but oblivious of everything, even him, but parental love gets trough. When Hades tells him she still can not be relieved, he makes a deal: they can go if he delivers back the three-headed hell-hound Cerberus, who got loose and causes havoc all trough the underworld. The hunt is arduous, but his physical force and kindness at the right time do the job, so Hera closes the hell-mouth and Hercules' family can resume its earthly happiness too.

Afghanistan is the world’s biggest exporter of black-market opium from which heroin is made. It’s a multi-billion dollar business, responsible for around a hundred thousand deaths every year and it’s a major source of income for terrorists. RT Doc travelled to the poppy fields where death is harvested to find out why no one can put a stop to this deadly trade. When it comes to heroin, a non-intervention policy is still going strong in Afghanistan where over 90% of the world’s black market opium is produced. Opium Farming - How do they do it ?
Opium is called “Afeem” in India and it is obtained from poppy plant- scientifically known as Papaver somniferum. Opium is dried latex obtained from the opium poppy i.e. fruit of this plant. Seeds of poppy, locally known as Khas-khas are sowed in the month of November. By February, the poppy plants are fruited enough to yield opium. At this time, farmers do rituals and pray for the good yield, and then collection of opium starts. Two special handmade instruments are used for opium collection “Nakhi” and “Sarapla”. Local people suffer from the drug business too, around 18% of the capital’s population are drug addicts. The places where drugs are sold and used are well known but the police are powerless to act. Mafia wars drive civilians from their land in the southern regions, forcing them into refugee camps in their own country. Opium growers get rich by plunging fellow citizens into the depths of misery.
RT Doc’s investigative team visited Afghanistan to document the Police’s losing battle against opium producers and its effect on the rest of the country. They talk to police officers, drug users and opium growers in search of a fuller picture and to ask why this massive and life-destroying industry continues to flourish.

Opium is called “Afeem” in India and it is obtained from poppy plant- scientifically known as Papaver somniferum. Opium is dried latex obtained from the opium poppy i.e. fruit of this plant. Seeds of poppy, locally known as Khas-khas are sowed in the month of November. By February, the poppy plants are fruited enough to yield opium. At this time, farmers do rituals and pray for the good yield, and then collection of opium starts. Two special handmade instruments are used for opium collection “Nakhi” and “Sarapla”. This video shows how do the opium farmers harvest their opium crop.

Cette chanson a été créée en 1930 par Charlys (musique et paroles) et Guy d'Abzac (paroles) ; les soldats de l'infanterie de marine en ont fait un chant militaire, atypique par son sujet. Le ton mélancolique et désabusé rappelle certains autres chants (tel que Marie-Dominique). Durant la guerre d'Indochine, des soldats, loin de la mère patrie - ils partaient alors pour trois années - cédant parfois aux "merveilleux mensonges" promis dans les fumeries d'opium.
Jacques Dutronc a, à la fin des années 80, enregistré une version de ce chant ; on en trouve une version enregistrée en public dans l'ablum enregistré au Casino de Paris.
Il se trouve parfois quelques variations : "Et le soir au port falot" ; "Puisse l'aile de nos chimères" , "Où dans l'ivresse de mes songes" ou "fondre" à la place de "prendre"

Opium (poppy tears, lachryma papaveris) is the dried latex obtained from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum).[4][5] Opium latex contains approximately 12% of the analgesic alkaloid morphine, which is processed chemically to produce heroin and other synthetic opioids for medicinal use and for the illegal drug trade. The latex also contains the closely related opiates codeine and thebaine and non-analgesic alkaloids such as papaverine and noscapine. The traditional, labor-intensive method of obtaining the latex is to scratch ("score") the immature seed pods (fruits) by hand; the latex leaks out and dries to a sticky yellowish residue that is later scraped off, and dehydrated. The word "meconium" (derived from the Greek for "opium-like", but now used to refer to infant stools) historically referred to related, weaker preparations made from other parts of the opium poppy or different species of poppies.[6]
The production of opium itself has not changed since ancient times. Through selective breeding of the Papaver somniferum plant, the content of the phenanthrene alkaloids morphine, codeine, and to a lesser extent thebaine, has been greatly increased. In modern times, much of the thebaine, which often serves as the raw material for the synthesis for hydrocodone, hydromorphone, and other semisynthetic opiates, originates from extracting Papaver orientale or Papaver bracteatum.
Opium for illegal use is often converted into heroin, which is less bulky,[citation needed] making it easier to smuggle, and which multiplies its potency to approximately twice that of morphine.

In a village in northeastern Afghanistan, it's just past eight in the morning at Islam Begs house, and the family is already curled up around a burning opium pipe
They include his one-year-old grandson
No one looks twice as his aunt blows the opium at him
It's a common practice here, resulting in rampant child addiction. Residents argue there is no alternative because there is no medicine: there is one drug and that's opium´
Islam Beg at age 65 admits he's ashamed of what he's become.
Islam Beg, drug addict "I started taking a smoke until I got addicted to this (opium). I lost my property, I lost my strength, my bravery and now I am laying here with an empty stomach."
Beg's forefathers used to own much of the land in the village and he once had 1,200 sheep. But they were sold, and then the land sold, to pay for opium.
The pipe is passed around and they all take turns to fill their lungs with this deadly substance.
This family of five is typical of the growing number of narcotics addicts in Afghanistan. There are an estimated 150,000 opium addicts and a further 50,000 heroin addicts here
Decades of war and poverty have instilled a sense of hopelessness in many people here, making narcotics an easydestructive way to deal with an often grim reality
This village Sarab has a population of fewer than 2,000, and half are already addicts
Afghanistan has few drug treatment services availablecountry-wide, there are fewer than 200 beds total for drug rehabilitation
In small villages like this everyone is linked and every family sinks further and further into debt

Every August, while Europe's bankers, lawyers, and other desk jockeys shut off their phones and head to the beach, the junkies of Prague set up camp in the poppy fields outside the city for a vacation of their own. For one glorious month, there are no cops to run from, no dealers to skirt—just acres of vermilion blooms and as much free opium as you can collect before nodding out.
This year we joined the junkies on their heroin holiday, to learn how to turn the same poppies that seed our morning bagels into potent injectable narcotics and sample the most all-natural, locally sourced opiates Europe has to offer. If they ask, please tell our moms we went to Majorca.
