"What is hateful unto you, do not do unto your neighbor. That is the whole Torah, all the rest is commentary. Now go and study."
This is the most famous teaching of Hillel, one of the greatest rabbis of the Talmudic era. What makes it so extraordinary is that is was offered to a gentile seeking conversion. Joseph Telushkin feels that this Talmudic story has great relevance for us today. At a time when religiosity is equated with ritual observance alone, when few Jews seem concerned with bringing Jewish teachers into the world, and when more than 40 percent of Jews intermarry, Judaism is in need of more of the openness that Hillel possessed two thousand years ago.
Hillel's teachings, stories, and legal rulings can be found throughout the Talmud; many of them share his emphasis on ethical and moral living as an essential element in Jewish religious practice, including his citing the concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world) as a basis for modifying Jewish law. Perhaps the most prominent rabbi and teacher in the Land of Israel during the reign of Herod, Hillel may well have influenced Jesus, his junior by several decades. In a provocative analysis of both Judaism and Christianity, Telushkin reveals why Hillel's teachings about ethics as God's central demand and his willingness to encourage the process of conversion began to be ignored in favor of the stricter and less inclusive teachings of his rabbinic adversary, Shammai.

Hillel was a famous Jewish religious leader, one of the most important figures in Jewish history. He is associated with the development of the Mishnah and the Talmud. Renowned within Judaism as a sage and scholar, he was the founder of the House of Hillel school for Tannaïm and the founder of a dynasty of Sages who stood at the head of the Jews living in the Land of Israel until roughly the fifth century of the Common Era.
He is popularly known as the author of two sayings: "If I am not for myself who is for me? And being for my own self, what am 'I'? And if not now, when?" and the expression of the ethic of reciprocity, or "Golden Rule": "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn."

Born a hundred years before Christ, Hillel the Elder was a famous Rabbi who wrote several theological treatises pertaining to Jewish law, one of which contained what is known today as the golden rule, which was later promulgated by Christians hundreds of years later. This portrait is the first in what I hope to be a long series of portraits of philosophers across the world, from Marx, to Kant, to Zarathustra. This particular portrait was created in the art style known as stippling, wherein individual dots are placed in different areas with different frequencies as to create the illusion of shade.

Almost everyone believes that Jesus walked the Holy Land in the early part of the 1st century CE. Many have never considered the alternative - that Jesus was a mythical being. Most Christians would probably consider such an idea to be blasphemy:
A conservative Christian, who believes in the inerrancy (freedom from error) of the Bible, and the inspiration by God of its authors, might cite passages from the Bible as proof of his existence. The gospels link Jesus' birth and crucifixion to historical persons and events. They describe his sayings, conversations, prayers and actions in great detail.
Many liberal Christians view Jesus as a great Jewish prophet and innovative, itinerant teacher. Even though they do not necessarily consider him divine, few ever question his existence.
Muslims also believe that Jesus was a great prophet. They do not believe that he died on the cross, but they definitely accept that he was born of a virgin, lived in Palestine in the early 1st century CE, and ascended to heaven without having previously died.
Many Jewish theologians regard Jesus as an itinerant rabbi of the 1st century CE who popularized many of the beliefs of the Pharisees and of teachings of Hillel the Elder, a first century BCE philosopher.
However, there are some individuals who disagree that the biblical accounts of Jesus are accurate:
Some claim that Jesus is simply a mythical character, not a historical person.
Others believe that the myths and legends associated with other religious leaders and founders were collected from Egypt, Persia, India, etc. They were rewritten to refer to a person in first century CE Palestine, who may or may not have existed.

This is just an interesting fact about the first recored sandwich in history. The first recorded sandwich was by the famous rabbi, Hillel the Elder, he lived during the 1st century B.C. He started the Passover custom of sandwiching a mixture of chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine between two matzohs to eat with bitter herbs. The filling between the matzohs served as a reminder of the suffering of the Jews before their deliverance from Egypt and represented the mortar used by the Jews in their forced labor of constructing Egyptian buildings. This practice was added to the Seder and the Hillel Sandwich was named after him.

Henry (Hillel) Abramson is the Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Services at Touro College's Miami branch (Touro College South). He is also currently the interim Chair of Judaic Studies there.
Henry Abramson was born and raised in Iroquois Falls, Ontario. He received his doctorate in history from the University of Toronto. He was Assistant Professor of History/Jewish Studies at Florida Atlantic University from 2002–2006 and during that time held appointments at a number of institutions including Oxford University, Cornell University, Harvard University, and Hebrew University. While teaching at Hebrew University, he simultaneously attended a class with Rabbi Mendel Weinbach at Ohr Somayach, Jerusalem. In 2006, Abramson moved to his current position at Touro College South.
Henry Abramson is largely known for his scholarship in Ukrainian Jewish history and antisemitic iconography. However, at the 40th Association of Jewish Studies Conference, Abramson chose to deliver a paper which reflected on his interest in the work of David Weiss Halivni and Joshua Rubinstein as regards the savoraim.

RA (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British Conservative politician and statesman known for his leadership of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. Hillel was a famous Jewish religious leader, one of the most important figures in Jewish history. He is associated with the development of the Mishnah and the Talmud. Renowned within Judaism as a sage and scholar, he was the founder of the House of Hillel school for Tannaïm and the founder of a dynasty of Sages who stood at the head of the Jews living in the Land of Israel until roughly the fifth century of the Common Era. Born a hundred years before Christ, Hillel the Elder was a famous Rabbi who wrote several theological treatises pertaining to Jewish law, one of which contained what is known today as the golden rule, which was later promulgated by Christians hundreds of years later. This portrait is the first in what I hope to be a long series of portraits of philosophers across the world, from Marx, to Kant, to Zarathustra. This particular portrait was created in the art style known as stippling, wherein individual dots are placed in different areas with different frequencies as to create the illusion of shade. -

Fact #1: The first sandwich ever
This is just an interesting fact about the first recored sandwich in history. The first recorded sandwich was by the famous rabbi, Hillel the Elder, he lived during the 1st century B.C. He started the Passover custom of sandwiching a mixture of chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine between two matzohs to eat with bitter herbs. The filling between the matzohs served as a reminder of the suffering of the Jews before their deliverance from Egypt and represented the mortar used by the Jews in their forced labor of constructing Egyptian buildings. Many liberal Christians view Jesus as a great Jewish prophet and innovative, itinerant teacher. Even though they do not necessarily consider him divine, few ever question his existence.
Muslims also believe that Jesus was a great prophet. They do not believe that he died on the cross, but they definitely accept that he was born of a virgin, lived in Palestine in the early 1st century CE, and ascended to heaven without having previously died.
Many Jewish theologians regard Jesus as an itinerant rabbi of the 1st century CE who popularized many of the beliefs of the Pharisees and of teachings of Hillel the Elder, a first century BCE philosopher.
However, there are some individuals who disagree that the biblical accounts of Jesus are accurate:
Some claim that Jesus is simply a mythical character, not a historical person.
Others believe that the myths and legends associated with other religious leaders and founders were collected from Egypt, Persia, India, etc. They were rewritten to refer to a person in first century CE Palestine, who may or may not have existed.

The gospels link Jesus' birth and crucifixion to historical persons and events. They describe his sayings, conversations, prayers and actions in great detail.
Many liberal Christians view Jesus as a great Jewish prophet and innovative, itinerant teacher. Even though they do not necessarily consider him divine, few ever question his existence.
Muslims also believe that Jesus was a great prophet. They do not believe that he died on the cross, but they definitely accept that he was born of a virgin, lived in Palestine in the early 1st century CE, and ascended to heaven without having previously died.
Many Jewish theologians regard Jesus as an itinerant rabbi of the 1st century CE who popularized many of the beliefs of the Pharisees and of teachings of Hillel the Elder, a first century BCE philosopher.
However, there are some individuals who disagree that the biblical accounts of Jesus are accurate:
Some claim that Jesus is simply a mythical character, not a historical person.
Others believe that the myths and legends associated with other religious leaders and founders were collected from Egypt, Persia, India, etc. They were rewritten to refer to a person in first century CE Palestine, who may or may not have existed.

Do the ten commandments only deal with Jews among eachother or are the laws universal ment for all people?
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow: this is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn" (Rabbi Hillel the Elder)
Comments of Jewish people talking about the situation in Israel and what is happening in the conflict with the Palestinians related to the ten commandments.
Once there was a gentile who came before Shammai, and said to him: "Convert me on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot. Shammai pushed him aside with the measuring stick he was holding. The same fellow came before Hillel, and Hillel converted him, saying: That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary, go and learn it."
"As Hillel the Elder had stated, whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world." 'Olam' can alternatively be translated 'age' or 'world'.
Hillel lived in Jerusalem during the time of King Herod and the Roman Emperor Augustus. In the Midrash compilation Sifre (Deut. 357), the periods of Hillel's life are made parallel to those in the life of Moses. Both lived 120 years (Deut. 34:7), and at the age of forty Hillel went to the Land of Israel; forty years he spent in study; and the last third of his life he was the spiritual head of the Jewish people. A biographical sketch can be constructed; that Hillel went to Jerusalem in the prime of his life and attained a great age. His activity of forty years likely covered the period of 30 BCE to 10 CE.

This is just an interesting fact about the first recored sandwich in history. The first recorded sandwich was by the famous rabbi, Hillel the Elder, he lived during the 1st century B.C. He started the Passover custom of sandwiching a mixture of chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine between two matzohs to eat with bitter herbs. The filling between the matzohs served as a reminder of the suffering of the Jews before their deliverance from Egypt and represented the mortar used by the Jews in their forced labor of constructing Egyptian buildings. This practice was added to the Seder and the Hillel Sandwich was named after him.

As the Jewish people began to spread out beyond Israel, they adopted the language of their new neighbors. This necessitated the need for translations of the Bible in their new languages in order for them to continue reading the Bible. While there have been many translations of the Hebrew Bible into many different languages, the three most widely used are the Latin, Aramaic and Greek.
Of the many Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible, there are three principle ones.
Targum Onkelos is an Aramaic translation of the first five books of the Bible. It was written in the 1st C CE by Onkelos, a Roman convert to Judaism.
Targum Jonathon is an Aramaic translation of the Prophets. It was written in the 1st C BCE by Jonathon Ben Uziel, a student of Hillel the Elder, the famous Jewish teacher and religious leader.
The Peshitta is an Aramaic translation of the entire Hebrew Bible that was written around the 2nd C. CE. The Peshitta also includes an Aramaic New Testament that was written around the 5th C. CE.
The Septuagint is a Greek translation of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, the Torah, written by Jewish scholars in the 3rd C. BCE. The remainder of the Hebrew Bible, the writings and the prophets were translated by unknown translators between the 2nd and 1st Centuries BCE.

Judaism is a gift. Jewish music is a treasure. One of the ways I express my love and pride for being a Jew is through my original Jewish compositions. I hope that the 12 compositions on my album (the name of which has yet to be determined) are able to inspire and enliven every type of Jew (and non-Jew).
Learning and teaching the Hebrew language are actions I am passionate about. I make sure to retain Hebrew throughout the album, enveloped with English here and there, as it is important to know what one is singing, praying, or hearing.
A constant concern in contemporary synagogues is keeping the interest of its congregants. It is hard to please everyone; however, with the right ingredients (a nice variety of music), it is more likely for almost everyone to be satisfied and refreshed after a Shabbat service. This concept of relevance and engaging the community is not limited to the synagogue; I believe that if my music triggers feelings of gratefulness and warmth, the location in which it is played will be a less important factor. Music fills the atmosphere, and if people are open to hearing new tunes, my melodies will increase the quality of every person's experience.

THE GOLDEN RULE:
The Golden Rule originates in a well-known Torah verse (Hebrew: "ואהבת לרעך כמוך"):
You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against your kinsfolk. Love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.

The Jewish sage and martyr Rabbi Akiba, following Hillel the Elder (c.110 BCE, died 10 CE), had singled out the Golden Rule (Leviticus 19:18) as a basic principle of the Torah meaning, that the principle of love must have its foundation in Genesis verse 1, which teaches that all men are the offspring of Adam who was made in the image of God (Sifra, Ḳedoshim, iv.; Yer. Ned. ix. 41c; Genesis Rabba 24). According to Jewish rabbinic literature, the first man Adam represents the unity of mankind. This is echoed in the modern preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And it is also taught, that Adam is last in order according to the evolutionary character of God's creation:
"Why was only a single specimen of man created first? To teach us that he who destroys a single soul destroys a whole world and that he who saves a single soul saves a whole world;[65] furthermore, so no race or class may claim a nobler ancestry, saying, 'Our father was born first'; and, finally, to give testimony to the greatness of the Lord, who caused the wonderful diversity of mankind to emanate from one type. The Jewish sage and martyr Rabbi Akiba, following Hillel the Elder (c.110 BCE, died 10 CE), had singled out the Golden Rule (Leviticus 19:18) as a basic principle of the Torah meaning, that the principle of love must have its foundation in Genesis verse 1, which teaches that all men are the offspring of Adam who was made in the image of God (Sifra, Ḳedoshim, iv.; Yer. Ned. ix. 41c; Genesis Rabba 24). According to Jewish rabbinic literature, the first man Adam represents the unity of mankind. THE GOLDEN RULE:
The Golden Rule originates in a well-known Torah verse (Hebrew: "ואהבת לרעך כמוך"):
You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against your kinsfolk. Love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
—Leviticus 19:18
This Torah verse represents one of several versions of the Golden Rule, which itself appears in various forms, positive and negative. It is the earliest written version of that concept in a positive form.
At the turn of the eras, the Jewish rabbis were discussing the scope of the meaning of Leviticus 19:18 and 19:34 extensively:
The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens; you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I the LORD am your God.
—Leviticus 19:34
Commentators summed up foreigners (= Samaritans), proselytes (= 'strangers who resides with you') (Rabbi Akiba, bQuid 75b) or Jews (Rabbi Gamaliel, yKet 3,1; 27a) to the scope of the meaning.
The Sage Hillel formulated a negative form of the golden rule. When asked to sum up the entire Torah concisely, he answered:
"That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn it."

Emanuel Ringelblum Historian of the Warsaw Ghetto Dr. Henry Abramson
An examination of the life and work of Emanuel Ringelblum (1900-1944), the heroic Polish scholar who organized the underground Oneg Shabbat society in the Warsaw Ghetto. Ringelblum recognized the extreme and unprecedented nature of the Nazi onslaught early in the war, and brought together a group of highly dedicated volunteers who recorded every aspect of Jewish life in the ghetto, including a functioning underground medical school, theaters, newspapers and the like. Betrayed to the Germans, he died a martyr's death, but not before he buried the Oneg Shabbat archives in milk cans. They were unearthed after the war, and constitute a major source for the study of the Holocaust. -

Do His will as if it were your own, so that He will do His will as if it were yours. Nullify your own will before His so that he will nullify the will of others before you (Pirkei Avot 2:4)
This teaching continues with sayings of Rabban Gamliel and then turns to Hillel the Elder, from whom Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai received the tradition (Tosefot Yom Tov).
Do His will as if it were your own will – that is, fulfill God’s will with eagerness and devotion – so that He may do your will as if it were His will, in fulfillment of His true desire to benefit His creatures. Another interpretation: Meiri translates this teaching as, "So that He may render your will as if it were His will" - and thus enable you to create harmony between the Divine will and your will (Bet HaBechirah, ad loc.). The reward for doing God's will as if it were your own is a profound spiritual transformation: You will be transformed from an ego-centered person to a God-centered person.
Nullify your will before His will, so that He may nullify the will of others before your will. The previous statement refers to the positive commandments, whereas this statement refers to the negative commandments (Tosefot Yom Tov).
Reb Noson: The Torah and its commandments collectively embody the Divine will.[i] By actively fulfilling the mitzvot of the Torah, we bind all our wills (that is, our desires) to the source of will, which is God’s will. This is the paradigm of “Nullify your will before His will,” which is the underlying principle behind our fulfillment of all the commandments.
You must never succumb to emotions which prompt impermissible behavior [vengeance, slander, violence, theft, cruelty, spite, etc.]. Never forget there is a "baalabus [boss, owner]" of the world [G-d]. Pirkei Avos, in several ways, tells us never to give up hope in Hashem's paying back the good or bad due to each person. No matter what a situation or another person does to you, Hashem has His requirements of you. His rules and standards always apply. If the situation is difficult, keep asking around to find intelligent, competent and dedicated rabbis who have expertise and who know how to help.
Bitul (Letting Go) with Emunah (faith) means that we let go of our fears and we let go and let HaShem. Letting go plus Emunah equals to the process of knowing that everything is from HaShem the good drama and what we call the bad. Bitul (Let go and let HaShem), you will be greatly surprised by the outcome.
Hitbodedut (secluded prayer), Talking to HaShem on a daily basis brings us closer to simcha (Ultimate Joy). Why is simcha so important? HaShem says to us, {Devarim 28:47} “Because you did not serve HaShem your God with simcha and with goodness of heart, out of an abundance of everything”. They were a part of the Christian readings of the Byzantine Empire. How Jewish Was Paul?
A person is either Jewish or not Jewish, and few actually believe that Paul was not. Hyam Maccoby is virtually alone in his opinion that Paul was a gentile. 1 However, if we can speak of the extent to which one demonstrates Jewish identity as that person's "Jewishness," perhaps it is Paul's Jewishness that people wish to call into question.
Perhaps most telling is what Paul himself had to say about being Jewish. Here is how he described himself: "Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the He-brews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless." (Philippians 3:5-6)
What did it mean to be "a Hebrew of the Hebrews"? Hebrews was a specialized term that referred to Jews who spoke Aramaic and worshiped at Hebrew-speaking congregations, as opposed to Hellenists who spoke and worshiped in Greek. A Hebrew of the Hebrews indicates an Aramaic-speaking, observant Jew whose parents were also Hebrews. Hebrews outside the land in places such as Tarsus-a city located in what today is Turkey-were immigrants who kept the more observant lifestyle of their place of origin. 2
Paul also wrote: "I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city [Jerusalem] at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers' law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today." (Acts 22:3)
Paul was educated at the feet of one of the most eminent Pharisaic rabbis of his time. In those days, leading rabbis headed schools in which they taught their perspectives and views to disciples. Gamaliel either succeeded the famous Hillel as head of the school of Hillel or headed his own school. 3 He sat on the Sanhedrin, the Supreme Court of ancient Israel, and had a reputation of great piety. The Mishnah 4 states: "When Rabban Gamaliel the Elder died, the glory of the Law ceased and purity and separateness died." The Pharisees were the separated ones. This accolade was tantamount to saying that Gamaliel was the last, and perhaps the best, exemplar of Pharisaism.

There is a story told about the famous Jewish sage Hillel, who lived in the first century before the Common Era. It is told that a Gentile challenged the great rabbi to recite the whole of the Torah while he stood on one leg. In response Hillel issued this version of the Golden Rule: "What is hateful to yourself, do not do to your fellow man. That is the whole of the Torah and the remainder is but commentary. Go study it." This provocative statement echoes down the ages to us all as we learn what is central to our own spirituality.

A strong earthquake has struck Myanmar, the US Geological Survey reports, with shaking felt across the region, BBC News reports.The 6.9 magnitude quake took place at a depth of around 140 kilometers (87 miles), northwest of Mandalay. There were no initial reports of any fatalities.The tremor could be felt in the northeast Indian state of Assam, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are staying....

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) engaged the help of professional hackers to find at least one software flaw to break into an iPhone used by one of the terrorists responsible for the Dec. 2 San Bernardino terrorist attacks, the Washington Post reported. The hackers were paid a one-time flat fee for their help, the Post said, quoting people familiar with the case....
