How to make homemade infant formula.
UPDATE: I have uploaded a video going into details on everything from exactly why we decided to look into a different alternative, to estimated cost, how my daughter is thriving three months into using this formula, and much more. This might answer some of the questions you might have, although you all are still more then welcome to continue to message or PM me!
My daughter developed issues on commercial formula, and after a really bad bout of colic we decided to see if we could find something better. I did quite a bit of research before I found this recipe,
http://oreganicthrifty.blogspot.com/2009/05/goat-milk-formula-recipe
.html
I did adjust it to fit my daughter's needs, and it worked beautifully.
The adapted recipe is, ( I was saying TABLESPOONS in the video, mistakenly. It is Teaspoons. My apologies! )
6 cups of water
12 Tbsps of powdered goat milk
2 tsp of
Organic Black-strap Molasses ( It provides
Iron, trace amounts of minerals &
B vitamins. )
2 tsp of Lactose. ( It adds much needed carbs, which are essential for brain development. You can substitute the Lactose with Organic
Maple Syrup if your child is lactose intolerant. )
1/4 cup of homemade whey. (
Loaded with probiotics
and nutrients. )
1/4 tsp of bifodobacterium infantis OR Infants probiotic which contains 6 strains of beneficial bacteria for infants and toddlers. ( It helps maintain a healthy gut, supports their immune system, and provides trace amounts of B vitamins. )
1 tsp of
Cod liver oil, or
1/2 a tsp of high vitamin cod liver oil. ( I could never really find the high vitamin liver oil, so I use flavorless cod liver oil. )
1 tsp of unrefined sunflower oil. ( Vitamin
E )
2 tsp of virgin coconut oil. (
I've begun omitting this from my recipe because my daughter usually prefers cold milk, and it will harden when cold causing a stopped up nipple in her bottle. )
4 drops of
B-12 & folic acid. ( I use the liquid adult form, just giving her 1/4 the recommended amount. ) You could also use nutritional yeast. I don't because my daughter is because we switched her due to reflux and gas, therefore I did not want to add something that could potentially cause the same problem.
1/4 tsp of
Acerola powder. (
Vitamin C )
I switched my daughter from the commercial formula to this recipe at 4 months old, and she has been thriving and doing amazing!
We took her to the pedi right before 6 months due to allergies, and she had gained
2 & 1/2 pounds, and 2 inches, setting her right at 15 and 1/2 pounds & 26 and 1/2 inches tall. We took her again right before she was 7 months, due to some really bad teething discomfort and diarrhea, and she had gained another
1 & 1/2 pounds, and
1 1/2 inches!
She is also developing really well, and even her pediatrician seemed surprised. She started crawling at
6 & 1/2 months, and the day after she began to crawl she could already pull herself up to a standing position. She can now stand unassisted, and has for a little while, for close to a minute without falling, and she is already starting to want to walk, with assistance of course.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
I did want to add that I do
100% believe that breastfeeding is absolutely the best thing you can do, but unfortunately that is not an option for every mom. I had every intention of breastfeeding, but I developed
PPD when my daughter was born so I was put on anti-depressants, and I was told I could NOT breastfeed. I found out later that that is NOT true. I also have multiple sclerosis, and shortly after she was born my neurologist wanted me to get back on medication, because I was starting to develop problems again. ( Being off medication was not an option, otherwise there was no guarantee that I would be able to care for my daughter if I became disabled. )
