Gutierrez taken inside high security prison STORYLINE Former President Lucio Gutierrez, who was arrested in Ecuador upon his return from exile to try to retake power, was being held on Saturday in cell Number 13 in the maximum-security wing of the capital Quito's main prison, facing a charge of threatening national security. Gutierrez was detained on Friday after renouncing political asylum in Colombia and flying home in a chartered jet, insisting he was unjustly ousted and accusing his successor, Ecuadorean President Alfredo Palacio, of fabricating charges against him. Gutierrez, exiled by Congress in April, landed in Manta at about 7:40 p.m. on Friday (0040 GMT on Saturday) in a chartered plane from the Colombian capital, Bogota. About 15 heavily armed police boarded the aircraft in the Pacific coast city and told Gutierrez he was under arrest and read him his rights. He was accompanied on the plane by his brother, Gilmar, and his lawyer, Fernando Larrea, as well as Fausto Cobo, a former official from his administration, and several journalists. Gutierrez remained calm as he was led to another plane, bound for the capital Quito. "I respect the police. This is yet another demonstration that they are violating my rights," he said before boarding the aircraft for Quito, some 260 kilometres (160 miles) to the northeast. A police spokesman suggested Gutierrez's imprisonment was for his own good, referring to the protests leading up to his flight from the country in April. Gutierrez took office in January 2003 as a populist, anti-corruption reformer. as illegal power grabs.
