Helsinki Airport or Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is the main international airport of the Helsinki metropolitan region and the whole of Finland.
It is located in Vantaa, Finland, about 17.0 km north of Helsinki city centre.
Originally built for the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, the airport served 15,279,043 passengers in 2013 and it is the fourth largest airport in the Nordic countries.
This is the new Helsinki-Vantaa airport train connection in Finland opened in July 2015.

I visited the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. I just wanted to see the place - I was not going to fly anywhere. I am not used to flying - I have never done any holiday travel by airplane. And I have never travelled from this airport.

This is in practise the only international airport in Finland - and the only big airport. I practise if you want to fly somewhere from Finland/Helsinki or come here your journey will start here.
It seems that check in etc. should be done by yourself, not much service. And I must say that I did not get idea how to travel by Finnair because there was no check-in. Ukrainan airlines and Turkish airlindes would have bee clear because they had check-in desks.
I was also looking for the public observation platform which should be somewhere - I did not find it. I visited the airport not seeing any airplanes.

Snow, ice or slippery conditions are not a problem at Helsinki Airport or any other airport in Finland. The Finnish airport operator Finavia has invested plenty of resources in winter maintenance.
The airports stay open in spite of snowfalls and sub-zero temperatures. The maintenance units, on call 24 for hours a day, and special machinery developed for reducing the slippery conditions of runways are the key.
Safety is the first priority; that is why winter maintenance and anti-ice and de-icing treatments of runways are so important.

We are at Helsinki Vantaa International Airport (HEL) in transit on our way to our connection flight. We have arrived from Copenhagen (CPH) Denmark with Finnair at Gate 27. Our end destination is Koh Samui, via Bangkok, Thailand. This footage shows the Helsinki Airport International Departures area, International Arrivals Area, Transit Area. The footage covers our airport transit path from Gate 27 to Gate 38 (with a few stops in the middle). We are heading for Gate 38 where our Finnair flight is due to begin boarding soon. The walk from Gate 27 to Gate 38 is estimated to be around 5 minutes from Gate 27 where we have disembarked the aircraft (according to Helsink Vantaa Airports own information screens). However travelers should be very aware that when making intercontinental flights from Helsinki Airport (HEL) even when in transit, they will have to pass through customs (passport control), this can take a long time with very long cues. If you are an EU citizen the process can go quicker if you use the automatic passport scanning machines. This is a fully automated system, you scan your passport where after the gate opens, you then stand infront of a webcam and are photographed after which passport control is completed and you may continue your transit walk to your connection flight (there is no footage from passport control as filming is not allowed in this area). All in all transit to connecting flights at Helsinki Airport is very swift and easy. As can be seen on the footage there are many shops, kiosks, souvenir stores, restaurants and cafes on the way and passengers will also find charging points for electronics such as mobile phones, tablets and laptop computers. The area after passport control is where most, if not all, of Finnair´s flights to Asia depart. Finnair´s Asian route network includes flights to Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Xián (in China), Hong Kong, Delhi (India), Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo (Japan), Seoul (Korea), Singapore, Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket (Thailand) and Hanoi in Vietnam.

Vantaa (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈʋɑntɑː]; Swedish: Vanda) is a city and municipality in Finland. Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo and Kauniainen make up the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
Vantaa, with its population of 203,177 (31 January 2012), is the fourth most populated city of Finland. The biggest airport in Finland, the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, is located there. It also hosts a science centre, Heureka.
The city is bilingual[citation needed], with a majority (88.6 %) being Finnish speakers and minority (3%) speakers of Finland Swedish. Vantaa's residents that speak a native language other than Finnish or Swedish stand at 8.4% of the population.
Vantaa encompasses 240.34 square kilometres (92.80 sq mi), of which 1.97 km2 (0.76 sq mi) is water. Population density is 852.36 /km2 (2,207.6 /sq mi). It borders Helsinki, the Finnish capital, which is to the south and southwest. Other neighbouring municipalities are Espoo to the west, Nurmijärvi, Kerava and Tuusula to the north and Sipoo to the east.
Vantaa is divided into seven districts (Finnish: palvelualueet, Swedish: storområden): Myyrmäki (Myrbacka), Tikkurila (Dickursby), Hakunila (Håkansböle), Korso, Koivukylä (Björkby) and Aviapolis.

Helsinki Airport or Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is the main international airport of the Helsinki metropolitan region and the whole of Finland. It is located in Vantaa, Finland, about 17.0 km north of Helsinki city centre. Originally built for the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, the airport served 15,279,043 passengers in 2013 and it is the fourth largest airport in the Nordic countries. -

I visited the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. I just wanted to see the place - I was not going to fly anywhere. I am not used to flying - I have never done any holiday travel by airplane. And I have never travelled from this airport. -------- This is in practise the only international airport in Finland - and the only big airport. I practise if you want to fly somewhere from Finland/Helsinki or come here your journey will start here. It seems that check in etc. should be done by yourself, not much service. And I must say that I did not get idea how to travel by Finnair because there was no check-in. Ukrainan airlines and Turkish airlindes would have bee clear because they had check-in desks. I was also looking for the public observation platform which should be somewhere - I did not find ... -

Snow at Helsinki Airport - operations run smoothly without cancellations or delays
Snow, ice or slippery conditions are not a problem at Helsinki Airport or any other airport in Finland. The Finnish airport operator Finavia has invested plenty of resources in winter maintenance. The airports stay open in spite of snowfalls and sub-zero temperatures. The maintenance units, on call 24 for hours a day, and special machinery developed for reducing the slippery conditions of runways are the key. Safety is the first priority; that is why winter maintenance and anti-ice and de-icing treatments of runways are so important. -

We are at Helsinki Vantaa International Airport (HEL) in transit on our way to our connection flight. We have arrived from Copenhagen (CPH) Denmark with Finnair at Gate 27. Our end destination is Koh Samui, via Bangkok, Thailand. This footage shows the Helsinki Airport International Departures area, International Arrivals Area, Transit Area. The footage covers our airport transit path from Gate 27 to Gate 38 (with a few stops in the middle). We are heading for Gate 38 where our Finnair flight is due to begin boarding soon. I visited the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. I just wanted to see the place - I was not going to fly anywhere. I am not used to flying - I have never done any holiday travel by airplane. And I have never travelled from this airport.

This is in practise the only international airport in Finland - and the only big airport. I practise if you want to fly somewhere from Finland/Helsinki or come here your journey will start here.
It seems that check in etc. should be done by yourself, not much service. And I must say that I did not get idea how to travel by Finnair because there was no check-in. Ukrainan airlines and Turkish airlindes would have bee clear because they had check-in desks.
I was also looking for the public observation platform which should be somewhere - I did not find it. I visited the airport not seeing any airplanes.

Our end destination is Koh Samui, via Bangkok, Thailand. This footage shows the Helsinki Airport International Departures area, International Arrivals Area, Transit Area. The footage covers our airport transit path from Gate 27 to Gate 38 (with a few stops in the middle). We are heading for Gate 38 where our Finnair flight is due to begin boarding soon. The walk from Gate 27 to Gate 38 is estimated to be around 5 minutes from Gate 27 where we have disembarked the aircraft (according to Helsink Vantaa Airports own information screens). However travelers should be very aware that when making intercontinental flights from Helsinki Airport (HEL) even when in transit, they will have to pass through customs (passport control), this can take a long time with very long cues. If you are an EU citizen the process can go quicker if you use the automatic passport scanning machines. This is a fully automated system, you scan your passport where after the gate opens, you then stand infront of a webcam and are photographed after which passport control is completed and you may continue your transit walk to your connection flight (there is no footage from passport control as filming is not allowed in this area). All in all transit to connecting flights at Helsinki Airport is very swift and easy. As can be seen on the footage there are many shops, kiosks, souvenir stores, restaurants and cafes on the way and passengers will also find charging points for electronics such as mobile phones, tablets and laptop computers. The area after passport control is where most, if not all, of Finnair´s flights to Asia depart. Arto continues to evolve as skateboarder, and his passion has grown to encompass skateboard photography, and indeed all aspects of photography. His photo work has been described a visual diary; a pictorial history of his incredible journey, those Arto has inspired along the way.

With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

One of Copenhagen’s most beloved attractions is Tivoli Gardens, a theme park that dates back to 1843. Watch a pantomime, ride one of the oldest roller coasters, or just enjoy a trip in a dragon boat. After a few hours at Tivoli Gardens, continue your Copenhagen sightseeing in the city proper. Copenhagen is like something out of a fairy tale, full of multicolored houses and boats that tie up at Copenhagen’s wharves.
Next, rent a bike. With almost 250 miles of bicycle lanes, getting around two wheels is a healthy, athletic way to get to know the city. Ride your bike to Nyhavn, a waterfront district that dates back to the 17th century. This is the spot to make friends at the local pubs, or to simply sit and watch the boats go back and forth over the waters of the Oresund. Nyhavn is also home to “The Little Mermaid,” a statue fashioned after the titular character in the Hans Christian Andersen tale. Make sure you bring your camera, as the mermaid is a popular place for a photo op.

Helsinki may be small but it packs a big punch and is one of the more accessible European capitals. A cosmopolitan vibe pervades the city, museums and theatres abound, the tidy streets are packed with bars, restaurants and cafés, and nothing is more than a short tram ride away from the centre.
Helsinki has a character that perfectly reflects its geographical location, on the historical fault-line between the Swedish and Russian empires. Although the Finnish capital is unmistakably Scandinavian, the architecture and the psyche of its inhabitants show the clear influence of mother Russia.
Another intrinsic part of the city's personality is the sea and all that comes with it; Helsinki boasts 315 islands and almost a 100km (60 miles) of coastline, at its most beautiful in the summer. There are a plethora of maritime attractions from Suomenlinna sea fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to cruises enabling visitors to explore the best of the archipelago, to Pihlajasaari and Uunisaari islands for gorgeous beaches. Its proximity to the ocean means Helsinki's seafood restaurants are bountiful -- try perch, whitefish, pikeperch and salmon served with new potatoes in summertime, while the legendary crayfish season starts in August.
In fact, when it comes to dining out, Helsinki has upped its game. "New Nordic Cuisine" (experimental, innovative cooking) has been adopted by numerous small, trendy restaurants and up and coming chefs, while a wave of popup restaurants has increased the diverse flavour of the city's dining scene. All things foodie are celebrated during Restaurant Day, now held four times a year, while the new Abbatoir encapsulates the city's dynamic food culture by showcasing cutting edge restaurants and food-related events. Visit Market Square and Esplanade Park for street food, the Hietalahti Market Hall flea market held every Sunday and sip coffee at one of the city's ubiquitous open air cafes.
In the summer, enjoy at picnic at Winter Garden, stroll along Ruoholahti canal, spend the day brushing up on your strokes at Kumpula Outdoor Swimming Pool or partake in that quintessential Finnish experience; the sauna. Kotiharju sauna the oldest public wood sauna in the city, dates back 70 years where the tradition of completing your visit with a lashing from a birch twig still thrives.
If you need advice whilst exploring the city, look out for the Helsinki Helpers, easily identifiable by their green vests, who patrol the inner city and cruise harbours from June until the end of August.
For outdoor lovers, there are plenty other activities: in summer, try fishing, cycling, golfing or head for the new Finnish Nature Centre in nearby Nuuksio National Park. Built entirely of wood and resembling a bird, the environmentally-friendly building opened in 2013 and showcases the best of nature using sounds, lights and scents. The centre is also the gateway to some fabulous hiking trails.
In winter, enjoy ice skating, skiing and snowboarding. In the city itself, there are also 180km of groomed crosscountry skiing trails, with the best are located in Central Park (Keskuspuisto), proving that Helsinki is a year round destination.

Another intrinsic part of the city's personality is the sea and all that comes with it; Helsinki boasts 315 islands and almost a 100km (60 miles) of coastline, at its most beautiful in the summer. There are a plethora of maritime attractions from Suomenlinna sea fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to cruises enabling visitors to explore the best of the archipelago, to Pihlajasaari and Uunisaari islands for gorgeous beaches. Its proximity to the ocean means Helsinki's seafood restaurants are bountiful -- try perch, whitefish, pikeperch and salmon served with new potatoes in summertime, while the legendary crayfish season starts in August.
In fact, when it comes to dining out, Helsinki has upped its game. "New Nordic Cuisine" (experimental, innovative cooking) has been adopted by numerous small, trendy restaurants and up and coming chefs, while a wave of popup restaurants has increased the diverse flavour of the city's dining scene. All things foodie are celebrated during Restaurant Day, now held four times a year, while the new Abbatoir encapsulates the city's dynamic food culture by showcasing cutting edge restaurants and food-related events. Visit Market Square and Esplanade Park for street food, the Hietalahti Market Hall flea market held every Sunday and sip coffee at one of the city's ubiquitous open air cafes.
In the summer, enjoy at picnic at Winter Garden, stroll along Ruoholahti canal, spend the day brushing up on your strokes at Kumpula Outdoor Swimming Pool or partake in that quintessential Finnish experience; the sauna. Kotiharju sauna the oldest public wood sauna in the city, dates back 70 years where the tradition of completing your visit with a lashing from a birch twig still thrives.
If you need advice whilst exploring the city, look out for the Helsinki Helpers, easily identifiable by their green vests, who patrol the inner city and cruise harbours from June until the end of August.
For outdoor lovers, there are plenty other activities: in summer, try fishing, cycling, golfing or head for the new Finnish Nature Centre in nearby Nuuksio National Park. Built entirely of wood and resembling a bird, the environmentally-friendly building opened in 2013 and showcases the best of nature using sounds, lights and scents. The centre is also the gateway to some fabulous hiking trails.
In winter, enjoy ice skating, skiing and snowboarding. In the city itself, there are also 180km of groomed crosscountry skiing trails, with the best are located in Central Park (Keskuspuisto), proving that Helsinki is a year round destination.

While in town, stop by the Nobel Peace Center—yes, this is the very location where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded. The center itself showcases winners of the award, and highlights their impact on the world at large. After spending an afternoon wandering the center, prepare yourself for an evening of extraordinary live performances, as the Oslo Opera House is just a short walk away. This majestic building, with its sloping roofs and massive wall of windows, has been compared to an iceberg in appearance. Besides being a popular performing arts venue, it’s also a popular place for locals to meet before heading out into town.
