Psychology Project 1st Period Theodora Reese Personality/ Music Genre Experiment Experiment Question: Do preferred styles of music reflect an individual’s central dimension of human personality? Storyboard: First I asked the participants to describe themselves in social and emotional stand points to collect an understanding of the type of people they were. Next, after giving them a psychological understanding of introversion and extraversion, they were asked to state which they were and why to determine which kind of personality they possessed. They were then asked to rate music of reflective and complex, intense and rebellious, upbeat and conventional, and energetic and rhythmic genres. This data was then compiled to show the correlation and comparison between the two qualities. Hypothesis: There will be a correlation. stand Participants who prefer fast-paced musical styles will have higher measures of extraversion and participants that prefer slower, calmer styles will have higher measures of being introverts. Designing a study and collecting data: Quick questionnaire that asks respondents to rate different musical styles on a scale from one to ten, ten being the most preferred. Conclusion: There was a slight correlation between introverts and preferring more calm and reflective genres such as classical music, and vice versa for extraverts. This correlation was not significant enough to make it a large factor in each causing each other. There are many more factors such as cultural exposure, peer exposure, age, race, gender, intelligence, etc. From this study it would be incorrect to say that being an introvert or extrovert directly relates to preferred music styles.
