Map
The Maremma is a vast area in Italy bordering the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas, consisting of part of south-western Tuscany - Maremma Livornese and Maremma Grossetana (the later coincident with the province of Grosseto), and part of northern Lazio - Maremma Laziale (in the province of Viterbo and Rome on the border of the region).
The poet Dante Alighieri in his Divina Commedia places the Maremma between Cecina and Corneto, the former name of Tarquinia.
It was traditionally populated by the Butteri, cattle-breeders who until recently used horses with a distinctive style of saddle. Once unhealthy because of its many marshes, the Maremma was drained during the fascist regime and re-populated with people coming from other Italian regions, notably from Veneto.
Endowed with significant natural and environmental resources, the Maremma is today one of the best tourist destinations in Italy,[says who?] a region where ancient traditions have survived and Tuscan culture is preserved. It is being promoted as a destination for agritourism.

I was trying to get a clip of Fingal sliding down the hill, as he likes to do, but he wasn't going for a big slide, opting instead for a slow motion tumble. Then King who was behind me heard something down at the bottom of the field and all three dogs went quickly into action. Perfect LGD behavior; the boys out on point while Maple hangs back to protect the livestock (in this case me :-). Not sure what it was they went after. I didn't hear anything. Maybe a coyote or bird of prey. -

Second, we believe that the best way to explore these wonderful destinations is by car. Many locations within Tuscany, for example, are simply not accessible by train and with so much to see and do, why be stuck in a tour bus with strangers on a schedule out of your control? The roads in Europe are terrific and the smaller roads that crisscross Tuscany are a joy to drive.
The problem comes when you find yourself hopelessly lost. Navigating in a foreign land can be a real challenge and lead to many frustrations. Everyone has heard of sheepdogs, but few people outside of Warrnambool, Australia have heard of penguin dogs used to protect a colony of little penguins from foxes on Middle Island, off its coast. The dogs, actually a pair of maremmas named Eudy and Tula have been doing their job since 2006 after the birds were nearly wiped out by the vulpine predators, which reportedly wiped out 360 penguins in one attack.... ....

A coalition of conservationists, academics and Warrnambool city council are crowdfunding to raise money to buy and train two maremma dogs to guard a group of penguins that are under constant threat from foxes ... no penguins were lost to foxes after the maremmas arrived....
