Martha and the Muffins are a Canadian new wave band, active from 1977 to the present. Although they only had one major international hit single (1980's "Echo Beach") under their original band name, they had a number of hits in their native Canada, and the core members of the band also charted in Canada and internationally as M + M.
The group's initial line-up came together in Toronto in 1977, when David Millar asked his fellow Ontario College of Art student Mark Gane to help him start a band. Millar recruited Martha Johnson to play keyboards; Johnson brought in a friend from high school, Carl Finkle, to play bass; and Gane's brother Tim signed on as the drummer. With Millar and Mark Gane as guitarists, and Johnson as lead vocalist, this is the line up that debuted at an Ontario College of Art Hallowe'en party in October 1977.
They chose the name "Martha and the Muffins" to distance themselves from the aggressive names adopted by many punk bands of the era. According to Mark Gane: "We decided to use it as a temporary name until we could all agree on something better." The name ended up sticking for the next seven years.
Martha of Bethany (Aramaic: מַרְתָּא Martâ) is a biblical figure described in the Gospels of Luke and John. Together with her siblings Lazarus and Mary, she is described as living in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem. She was witness to Jesus' resurrection of her brother, Lazarus.
The name Martha is a Latin transliteration of the Koine Greek Μάρθα, itself a translation of the Aramaic מַרְתָּא Martâ, "The mistress" or "the lady", from מרה "mistress", feminine of מר "master". The Aramaic form occurs in a Nabatean inscription found at Puteoli, and now in the Naples Museum; it is dated AD. 5 (Corpus Inscr. Semit., 158); also in a Palmyrene inscription, where the Greek translation has the form Marthein.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus visits the home of two sisters named Mary and Martha. The two sisters are contrasted: Martha was "cumbered about many things" while Jesus was their guest, while Mary had chosen "the better part", that of listening to the master's discourse. The name of their village is not recorded, nor any mention of whether Jesus was near Jerusalem:
Mostly forgotten classic by Martha & the Muffins from their 2nd 1980 album “Trance And Dance.” Written by Mark Gane. I was someone who Put a lot of faith In what I saw and what I heard. There were persons who Said they were my frieds And I took them at their word. I was fooled and I was tricked and These friends were hand-picked so What can you do? What can you say? Only thing to do is Be blase'. No one's happy in the modern world, Jean-Paul Sartre told us that. Despite the loads of rhetoric, He was talking through his hat. There's an exit, There's a throughway, Here's the word it's Be blase. Riding on the streetcar, Not going very far, Someone pats me on the head, Someone who I thought was dead. Says: "It's time to go to bed." This is what I said: "You ...

Blaze Black is a hack for Pokemon Black that allows you to catch and evolve every single pokemon without the need for trading between games. It also drastically increases the difficulty of the game by providing stronger trainers and gym battles, the first gym alone has a 6 pokemon roster. You can find out more here: http://gbatemp.net/topic/286850-pokemon-blaze-black-pokemon-volt-white/ A Nuzlocke Run is a run in which you are only allowed to catch a certain amount of Pokemon and if they faint you must release them adding even further to the difficulty and making it possible to "lose" and have to start over. The benefit of doing this with Blaze Black is the sheer number of Pokemon in an area makes it so your teams will always be drastically different from run to run. You can read about th...

Martha and the Muffins live at Nottingham Theatre Royal 1980 - Rockstage Track: Echo Beach
Martha and the Muffins live on ATV's Rockstage 1980 in Nottingham UK. Tracks include Paint By Number Heart
This early rendition of 'Echo Beach' comes from footage shot by Henry Dunsmore and Robin Cass of Martha and the Muffins performing for the second year at the annual Hallowe'en Dance at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto on October 27, 1978. (The band's very first gig ever had been a year earlier at the same event.) Video cameras were very cumbersome at the time, with open reel, black and white video tape being the standard. Several years later, the original open reel tapes literally started to fall apart as they were being transferred to VHS in order to view the footage on a more up to date format. Only a few songs remain in a viewable state although the badly damaged sections are interesting in their own right as they flicker intermittently between figuritive and purely abstract images...

Stick Figure Neighbourhood was the first album by the Burlington band Spoons. Released in 1981, it received some airplay on college stations, particularly the songs Conventional Beliefs and Red Light. This album was recorded by Daniel Lanois at the Grant Avenue Studios in Hamilton, Ontario. Its liner notes collectively thank fellow contemporary Toronto bands The Diodes, Martha and the Muffins, and concert promoter Gary Cormier of "The Garys". As Gordon Deppe mentions in his liner notes for Collectible Spoons, this collection of songs "is a bit rough around the edges, but there are things on it that [are] still very interesting and perplexing." 1. "Conventional Beliefs" 2. "Stick Figure Neighbourhood" 3. "Red Light" 4. "For Tran" 5. "Capitol Hill" 6. "Ice Age" 7. "Dropped D...

This practical workshop examines how cultural institutions can connect with their audiences through storytelling. The masterclass will address specific issues faced by cultural institutions today, using storytelling along with the latest digital tools and techniques, to ask questions and come up with potential answers. Each participant will bring a real question or problem to the masterclass; case studies and projects involving best practices and outcomes will create a framework for our discussions. Working in small groups, participants will be guided to develop innovative solutions and a plan to implement them, which will then be presented to and di...

Martha & The Muffins Interview on Countdown 1980
Rare interview from Australian TV show Countdown. September 1980.
On the boardwalk of Sunnyside Beach in Toronto, Mark Gane describes how he wrote "Echo Beach" for Martha and the Muffins. I know it's out of fashion And a trifle uncool But I can't help it I'm a romantic fool It's a habit of mine To watch the sun go down On Echo Beach, I watch the sun go down From nine till five I have to spend my time at work My job is very boring, I'm an office clerk The only thing that helps me pass the time away Is knowing I'll be back at Echo Beach some day On a silent summer evening The sky's alive with light A building in the distance Surrealistic sight On Echo Beach Waves make the only sound On Echo Beach There's not a soul around Echo Beach Far away in time
http://www.canadianmusician.com/ CM's Mike Raine had the chance to speak with Martha Johnson of iconic Canadian new wave outfit Martha and the Muffins. She also released a solo children's album, Songs from the Treehouse, in 1997, for which she won the Juno Award for Best Children's Album at the Juno Awards of 1997. She is married to her Martha and the Muffins bandmate, Mark Gane. In 2001, Johnson was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, but continues to perform and has used this platform to raise awareness in her shows. In 2013 Johnson announced her latest solo project called "Solo One," with a portion of the proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
A segment from the long running Australian music TV series Countdown, which aired on the ABC from 1974-1987. This particular segment aired during the Countdown episode which originally aired on September 21, 1980, on the ABC. This clip features an interview of Canadian band Martha & The Muffins, with band members Martha Johnson, Martha Ladley, and Mark Gane, conducted by Countdown London-based interviewer/reporter Cherry Ripe. The interview begins with Cherry asking about the co-incidence of there being two members of the band named Martha, and where the 'Muffin' part of their name came from. Cherry then asks about the premise of their single 'Echo Beach', and asks about the writing of some of their other songs. Note: Martha & The Muffins hit single 'Echo Beach' plays from the begin...
