Volga Region (Russian: Поволжье, Povolzhye) is a historical region in Russia that encompasses territories adjacent to the flow of the Volga River. Based on that, it is usually classified into the Upper Volga Region, Middle Volga Region (Central Volga Region) and Lower Volga Region.
Another notable distinction is the elevated right bank side featuring the Volga Upland and the left bank side or Trans-Volga Region, Transvolga (Russian: Заволжье, Zavolzhye), which consists of the elevated High Transvolga and the lowland Low Transvolga.
Idel-Ural region is also defined within Povolzhye.
In the modern Russian Federation, the Volga Region is associated with the Volga Federal District and Volga economic region (rather different entities).

The Volga Germans (German: Wolgadeutsche or Russlanddeutsche, Russian: Поволжские немцы, Povolzhskie nemtsy) are ethnic Germans who colonized and historically lived along the River Volga in the region of southeastern European Russia around Saratov and to the south. Recruited as immigrants to Russia in the 18th century, they were allowed to maintain their German culture, language, traditions, and churches (Lutheran, Reformed, Catholics, and Mennonites). In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many Volga Germans emigrated to Kansas, the Dakotas and other states across the western United States, as well as to Canada and South America (mainly Argentina and Brazil).
After the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 during World War II, the Soviet government considered the Volga Germans potential collaborators, and transported many of them eastwards, where thousands died. After the war, the Soviet Union expelled some ethnic Germans to the West. In the late 1980s and 1990s, many of the remaining ethnic Germans moved from the Soviet Union to Germany.

The Bulgars (also Bulghars, Bulgari, Bolgars, Bolghars, Bolgari; Proto-Bulgarians) were semi-nomadic warrior tribes of Turkic extraction who flourished in the Pontic-Caspian steppe and the Volga region during the 7th century. Emerging as nomadic equestrians in the Volga-Ural region, according to some researchers their roots can be traced to Central Asia. During their westward migration across the Eurasian steppe the Bulgars absorbed other ethnic groups and cultural influences, including Hunnic, Iranian and Indo-European. Modern genetic research on Central Asian Turkic people and ethnic groups related to the Bulgars points to an affiliation with western Eurasian and European populations. The Bulgars spoke a Turkic language, i.e. Bulgar language of Oghuric branch. They preserved military tit...
Deep within the Middle Volga region of Russia lives an ancient Finno-Ugric people, the Maris. The land they call home lies between the Malaya Kokshaga and Vyatka rivers and on this land, as early as the second half of the first millennium AD, the Mari's unique culture was formed. Here, under the Sacred Tree rest the remains of the son of the last Mari leader, Akpatyr. Traditionally, every Mari is expected, at least once in their lifetime, to make a journey to the Sacred Tree and bring a shawl or towel as an offering. Akpatyr was well known as an enlightener and a healer. In this area, he founded the first Mari village and promoted the Mari faith. Legend has it, that Akpatyr drew his strength from a golden duck that swam in a wooden basin filled with honey, hidden beneath the floor of his h...
