The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is a concerto for piano and orchestra, composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff between the autumn of 1900 and April 1901. The second and third movements were first performed with the composer as soloist on 2 December 1900. The complete work was premiered, again with the composer as soloist, on 27 October 1901, with his cousin Alexander Siloti conducting. This piece is one of Rachmaninoff's most enduring popular pieces, and established his fame as a concerto composer. he opening movement begins with a series of bell-like tolling on the piano that build tension, eventually climaxing in the introduction of the main theme. In this first section, the orchestra carries the Russian-character melody while the piano makes an accompaniment made of arpeggios riddled with half steps. After the statement of the long first theme, a quicker transition follows until the more lyrical second theme, in E flat major, is presented. The agitated and unstable development borrows motives from both themes changing keys very often and giving the melody to different instruments while a new musical idea is slowly formed. The music builds in a huge climax as if the work was going to repeat the first bars of the work, but the recapitulation is going to be quite different. While the orchestra restates the first theme, the piano, that in the other occasion had an accompaniment role, now plays the march-like theme that had been halfway presented in the development, thus making a considerable readjustment in the exposition, as the main theme, played by the orchestra has become an accompaniment. This is followed by a piano solo, which leads into a descending chromatic passage and concluding with an eerie french horn solo. From here the last minutes of the movement are placid until drawn into the agitated coda, and the piece ends in C minor fortissimo.

From here the last minutes of the movement are placid until drawn into the agitated coda, and the piece ends in C minor fortissimo.

Sergei Rachmaninoff - Segundo movimento do Concerto para Piano nº 2 in C minor - HD

Watch and listen to Hélène Grimaud talk about her second album at Deutsche Grammophon featuring Chopin and Rachmaninov. She makes her return with what can easily be called the most intimate recording she has done so far: Juxtaposing the second piano sonatas by Chopin and Rachmaninov, this programme contains the very soul of Romantic piano literature - the sheer colour and uncompromising emotionality of this music is breathtaking.
Also this album is a debut for Hélène Grimaud as it contains her first ever Chopin studio recording - after visiting a Chopin recital concert of Maurizio Pollini in Tokyo in May 2004 she made the decision that it was time to approach probably the greatest of all piano composers again.
Hélène Grimaud is one of the most gifted pianists of our time, with an almost unheard-of sensitivity to emotional shades.

DAVID GARRETT - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op.43 (Rachmaninoff, Sergei)

David Garrett (born as David Bongartz on 4 September 1981) is a record-breaking German classical violinist and recording artist.
Musical education :
When Garrett was four years old, his father bought a violin for his older brother. The young Garrett took an interest and soon learned to play. A year later, he took part in a competition and won first prize. By the age of seven, he studied violin at the Lübeck Conservatoire, and by the age of 12, Garrett began working with the distinguished Polish violinist Ida Haendel, often traveling to London and other European cities to meet her. After leaving home at 17, he enrolled in the Royal College of Music in London, leaving after the first semester. On being asked in an interview if he was expelled, Garrett responded: "Well expelled wasn't the official term... It was mutually agreed that me and the RCM were going separate ways after the first semester. I did skip some lessons -- but I also broke in to do extra practice, so that didn't help!" In 1999 he moved to New York to attend the Juilliard School, in 2003 winning the Composition Competition of Juilliard School with a fugue composed in the style of Johann Sebastian Bach. While at Juilliard he studied under Itzhak Perlman, one of the first to do so, and graduated in 2004.
Career :
Garrett received his first Stradivarius at the age of 11, courtesy of German president Richard von Weizsäcker, after having performed for him. At the age of 13, Garrett recorded two CDs, appeared on German and Dutch television, and gave a concert in the residence of the Federal Republic of Germany President, the Villa Hammerschmidt, at Dr. von Weizsäcker's personal invitation.[citation needed] He was offered the use of the famous Stradivarius "San Lorenzo", which is among the best instruments of the "golden period". At the age of 13, as the youngest soloist ever, Garrett signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft. In April 1997, age 16, He played with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Zubin Mehta in Delhi and Mumbai in concerts marking the 50th anniversary of India's Independence.
Two years later, Garrett played with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester in Berlin, under the direction of Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, and was hailed by critics. This led to an invitation to perform at Expo 2000 in Hannover. At the age of 21, he was invited to perform at the BBC Proms.
While studying at Juilliard, Garrett supplemented his income by working as a model.
Garrett performing in Cologne on 15 January 2010
Garrett's 2008 album Encore pursues an aim of arousing young people's interest in classical music. The release contains arrangements and compositions of his own of pieces and melodies that have accompanied him in his life so far. Together with his band, consisting of keyboard, guitar and drums, he gives concerts that include classical sonatas (accompanied by a concert grand piano), arrangements, and compositions, as well as rock songs and movie themes. In Autumn 2007, Garrett was chosen by the Montegrappa firm (whose articles are distributed by Montblanc throughout the world) as an ambassador for the launch of the new pens from the Tributo ad Antonio Stradivari collection. The event took place in several different venues, including Rome, New York, Hong Kong, Berlin, and London. On this occasion, Garrett has been offered a Stradivarius from the Gli Archi di Palazzo Comunale collection. He also appeared at the Royal Variety Performance on 5 December 2011, playing his cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.
He joined the 9th annual Independent Music Awards judging panel to assist independent musicians' careers. His most recent album, Legacy, was released 4 November 2011. On May 19, 2012 he appeared in the UEFA Champions League Final performing with German singer Jonas Kaufmann.

Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30

- Composer: Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (1 April 1873 -- 28 March 1943)
- Performer: Vladimir Ashkenazy
- Year of recording: Live in Lugano, Switzerland, 1968(?)
Variations on a Theme of Corelli Корели) Op. 42, written in 1931.
The Theme is followed by 20 variations, an Intermezzo between variations 13 and 14, and a Coda to finish.
00:00 - Theme. Andante
01:11 - Variation 1. Poco piu mosso
01:58 - Variation 2. L'istesso tempo
02:38 - Variation 3. Tempo di Minuetto
03:12 - Variation 4. Andante
04:09 - Variation 5. Allegro (ma non tanto)
04:30 - Variation 6. L'istesso tempo
04:50 - Variation 7. Vivace
05:18 - Variation 8. Adagio misterioso
06:15 - Variation 9. Un poco piu mosso
07:28 - Variation 10. Allegro scherzando
08:01 - Variation 11. Allegro vivace
08:24 - Variation 12. L'istesso tempo
09:01 - Variation 13. Agitato
09:33 - Intermezzo
10:59 - Variation 14. Andante (come prima)
12:08 - Variation 15. L'istesso tempo
13:57 - Variation 16. Allegro vivace
14:27 - Variation 17. Meno mosso
15:27 - Variation 18. Allegro con brio
15:59 - Variation 19. Piu mosso. Agitato
16:26 - Variation 20. Piu mosso
17:24 - Coda. Andante
The theme is La Folia, which was in fact not composed by Arcangelo Corelli, but was used by him in 1700 as the basis for 23 variations in his Sonata for violin, violone, and harpsichord in D minor, Op. 5, No. 12. La Folia was popularly used as the basis for variations in Baroque music. Franz Liszt used the same theme in his Rhapsodie Espagnole S. 254 (1863).
Rachmaninov dedicated the work to his friend the violinist Fritz Kreisler.
He wrote to another friend, the composer Nikolai Medtner, on 21 December 1931: "I've played the Variations about fifteen times, but of these fifteen performances only one was good. The others were sloppy. I can't play my own compositions! And it's so boring! Not once have I played these all in continuity. I was guided by the coughing of the audience. Whenever the coughing would increase, I would skip the next variation. Whenever there was no coughing, I would play them in proper order. In one concert, I don't remember where - some small town - the coughing was so violent that I played only ten variations (out of 20). My best record was set in New York, where I played 18 variations. However, I hope that you will play all of them, and won't 'cough'."
Ashkenazy plays this piece very well, no 'coughs' in this performance...

In the attic I found an old tape. It was an old recording of earlier times. To be exact: a recording of the 20th century (1991).
I immediately bought software for digitizing the old tape.
Because the quality of the tape was not in a perfect state the result is not optimal. I even remastered it with professional music software to improve the sound.
But I see it more as a part of my musical past, a souvenir that I want to share with you. Thanks for listening!

The All-Night Vigil (Russian: Всенощное бдение, Vsenoshchnoe bdenie), Opus 37, is an a cappella choral composition by Sergei Rachmaninoff, written and premiered in 1915. It consists of settings of texts taken from the Russian Orthodox All-night vigil ceremony. It has been praised as Rachmaninoff's finest achievement and "the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church". It was one of Rachmaninoff's two favorite compositions along with The Bells, and the composer requested that one of its movements (the fifth) be sung at his funeral. The title of the work is often translated as simply Vespers, which is both literally and conceptually incorrect as applied to the entire work: only the first six of its fifteen movements set texts from the Russian Orthodox canonical hour of Vespers.
Rachmaninoff composed the All-Night Vigil in less than two weeks in January and February 1915. The first performance was given in Moscow on March 10 of that year, partly to benefit the Russian war effort. Nikolai Danilin conducted the all-male Moscow Synodal Choir at the premiere. It was received warmly by critics and audiences alike, and was so successful that it was performed five more times within a month. However the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the rise of the Soviet Union led to a ban on performances of all religious music, and on 22 July 1918 the Synodal Choir was replaced by a nonreligious "People's Choir Academy". It has been written that "no composition represents the end of an era so clearly as this liturgical work"

Never Gonna Fall in Love Again ".
