The following list of place names with royal patronage in the United Kingdom includes both those granted a royal title or status by express wish of a specific monarch, and those with prefixes or suffixes such as "King's" or "Regis" that relate to historic ownership of the area by the Crown.
The following places have been explicitly granted or confirmed the use of the title "royal" by royal charter, letters patent or similar instrument issued by the monarch. Since 1926 the entitlement to the title "royal borough" has been strictly enforced.Devizes in Wiltshire, which had previously used the title without sanction, was forced to end the practice.
Regis, Latin for "of the king", occurs in numerous placenames. This usually recalls the historical ownership of lands or manors by the Crown. The "Regis" form was often used in the past as an alternative form to "King's", for instance at King's Bromley and King's Lynn.
Kensington and Chelsea could refer to:
The Metropolitan Borough of Kensington was a Metropolitan borough in the County of London from 1900 to 1965.
It bordered Chelsea, Fulham, Hammersmith, Paddington, and Westminster.
It included Kensington, South Kensington, Earls Court, Notting Hill, Brompton and part of Kensal Green.
In 1901 it was granted the status of a royal borough, and therefore from then was also known as the Royal Borough of Kensington. The status was granted after the death of Queen Victoria, in accordance with her wish (she was born at Kensington Palace in the borough).
In 1965 it was amalgamated with the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea to form the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
A number of street name plaques still bear the designation "Royal Borough of Kensington"; one such sign, in Portobello Road, is seen fleetingly in the Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971).
The Town Hall in Kensington High Street was an Italianate building dating from 1880 designed by Robert Walker. It was demolished "in controversial circumstances" in June 1982.
The Royal is a British medical drama series produced by ITV that ran from 2003 to 2011. The show comprised one-hour episodes which were normally first aired on ITV in the Sunday early evening slot.
The title of the series refers to the fictional "St Aidan's Royal Free Hospital", located in Elsinby, a fictional rural seaside town, portrayed as being close to Aidensfield, the fictional setting of the UK TV series Heartbeat. The series was shot in Whitby and Scarborough, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The Royal is an NHS hospital serving the local town, countryside and visitors. The show was set in the 1960s. It began as a spin-off from another popular ITV show set in North Yorkshire, Heartbeat.
Stars of the show included Ian Carmichael, Wendy Craig, Robert Daws, and Amy Robbins. The last episode of the show aired at 7.00 pm on Sunday, 31 July 2011 on ITV.
The Royal was introduced in the 14th episode of the 12th series of Heartbeat entitled 'Out Of The Blue' and The Royal benefited from this connection to the extremely popular parent series; several Heartbeat characters appeared in the first couple of series of The Royal, most notably Bill Maynard as a bed-ridden Claude Greengrass, but as the series progressed it generally dropped its character crossovers with Heartbeat to become its own entity.

The queen awarded Greenwich the title Royal Borough, the first such title in 80 years. To celebrate this on the 5th of February there was massive fireworks over the Themas in front of the Old Royal Naval Collage in Greenwich. I happened to stumble upon the celebrations as we headed to Greenwich in search of something to eat with my friend. The fireworks were impressive. See whole blog of the celebrations at: http://www.arcticnomad.com/2012/02/15/chance-encounters-greenwich-royal-borough-celebrations/
