Entry from: Nazca, Peru Entry Title: "The Nauseating flight over Nazca" Entry: "Hello again, I think I am paying for it after the flight over Nazca lines, they were very dramatic but the ride was a nightmare nauseating experience.....just got off the small plane, still wanna puke...... I was lucky that my hotel was able to arrange the tour for me. The manager Luis was able to put me on the flight over Nazca line and Chauchilla tomb tour at a good price. Because of the filight over Nazca line was so popular, I had to wait until 330 pm until I can get on the plane. According to the Loney Planet guide book, it recommends tourists to skip breakfast, so I have been NPO( nothing by mouth) since last night in order to avoid a nauseating experience. Now I know how my patients feel when I put them on NPO.... The morning starts with the tour of the Chauchilla Cemetery. This site dated back to 600 BC to 600 AD, more than 2000 years old. This was the former burial site of the Nazca people. Since they lived in the desert, they were nomads wondering from place to place until they found water and food. They also had shrt life span between 20-30 years. In order for the deceased to have a good passing into the after life, the Nazca people mummified them by first removing the organs and second allow the desert to dehydate the body and then wrap them either in cloth or cotton. Inside each square tomb, the dried bodies were surrounded by offerings such as jewelry, gold, pottery, strands of hair and other objects. Unfortunately, when the Spainards arrive in the 1500-1600´s the tomb were mercilessly looted, romoving all their jewelries, while the remainder were constantly loots by grave robbers who ended up taking the potteries for sell on the black market for 3-4000 dollars a piece. During the process, the remains of the Nazca ancestors were scattered all over the desert until the archeologists and scientists came along to put the most complete mummies back into the tomb and protect them with huts and mud walls o prevent further damages. The tourists are only allowed in certain areas now a days to see these mummies. It is sad to see still fragments of wrapping cloths, hair strands and cotton still scattered everywhere. Next we visited the ceramic factory where the local artisans continued the tradition of making Nazca potteries. These potteries are very beautiful with pretty designs. We also visited the gold extracting site where thousands of pounds of dirt were cleaned in order to extract several grams of gold, talking about hard work. SInce my flight won´t leave until 330 pm, my guide dropped me off at the aerodrome to wait . I ran into several other travellers whom I met on my other segments of tour and we had a nice chat. The flight was done on a light plane and it lasts for 15 minutes. The shaking and tilting of the plane was very unpleasant. But seeing the Nazca line in person must be one of the most amazing experience in my life. The theory behind the purpose of these lines are multiple and hypothetical. They run from ancestral ceremonial sites to sacrificial site to space alien landing site. The figures are so huge that the only way to appreciate them is by flying over them. The designs include monkey, astronaut, condor, hummingbird, spider and much more. It was a great experience but I wouldn´t do it again. The motion sickness is just too overwhelming. I was so happy when the plane landed because I was about to go. I will be returning to Lima tonight and spend the last three days there relaxing."
