On September 3, 2013, three days after the inaugural Kuria Cultural Festival, we visited musicians from the winning performance troupe from Ntimaru, a small village in Southwestern Kenya, just metres from the Tanzania border. The singing includes Kikuria but is mostly alliterative sounds (vocables), accompanied by the iritungu (eight-string lute), ekegogo (single-string fiddle) and ibirandi (gourd shakers). Michael Derek Gideon studied the poetry and music of Kuria for nine months in 2013, with the guidance and expertise of teacher and scholar, Peter Muniko. Both are dancing in the background.

Following FGM cases going on in Kuria District whereby young girls are taken for the cut in the month of December annually, more than 200 young girls are camping in Ikerege village at a rescue camp fearing forced female genital mutilation. Speaking to press at the center, the girls said the Government must now come out strongly and save them from this culture. But according to one of the Kuria elders, men should not be blamed over FGM but the girls must blame their mothers who take them for the procedure.

A form three student has died and his brother is fighting for his life at Oruba Nursing Home after cattle rustlers at Chimato Location in Kuria East District attacked them. Domnic Maroa Nyansai a student at Tomokobo Secondary School was shot and then hacked to death by the rustlers while he and his brother tried to protect their family's cattle. Nyanza PPO Joshua Ole Tito called for calm among locals and discouraged any revenge attacks when he visited the area. Residents have however complained over police laxity in curbing insecurity.

The Narok-Migori border is said to be the point where Kuria District and Ongata Barrikoi residents have conflicted on several occasions over cattle rustling.

Kuria District is an administrative district in the Nyanza Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Kehancha (sometimes spelled as Kihancha). The district has a population of 256,086 (2009 census) and an area of 581 km². It is inhabited by Kuria people.
Kuria district was split into two in December 2007, Kuria West district with Kehancha as the district capital and Kuria East district with Kegonga as the district capital.
Kuria West covers three administrative divisions namely Kehancha, Mabera and Masaba Divisions while Kuria East spans the two administrative divisions namely Kegonga and Ntimaru.
However one peculiarity is that the two District's have only one local authority, Kehancha municipality and one electoral constituency, Kuria Constituency which is represented in parliament by Dr W.G Machage. Kuria District is divided into five administrative divisions:

Tensions high at Trans Mara Kuria border after man's murder

Strength Of A Woman: Dennitah Ghati
She escaped the female cut and early marriage by a whisker in a humble village of the now Kuria East district in Migori County where she was born. Her escape from what many girls her age underwent motivated her to study hard to try and make a difference to the plight of women and girls in her community. Today, she is one of the journalists that have made their way to the eleventh parliament and is known for writing and publishing several articles in the Kenyan media with special attention to women and the girl child. On September 3, 2013, three days after the inaugural Kuria Cultural Festival, we visited musicians from the winning performance troupe from Ntimaru, a small village in Southwestern Kenya, just metres from the Tanzania border. The singing includes Kikuria but is mostly alliterative sounds (vocables), accompanied by the iritungu (eight-string lute), ekegogo (single-string fiddle) and ibirandi (gourd shakers). Michael Derek Gideon studied the poetry and music of Kuria for nine months in 2013, with the guidance and expertise of teacher and scholar, Peter Muniko. Both are dancing in the background.

Following FGM cases going on in Kuria District whereby young girls are taken for the cut in the month of December annually, more than 200 young girls are camping in Ikerege village at a rescue camp fearing forced female genital mutilation. Speaking to press at the center, the girls said the Government must now come out strongly and save them from this culture. But according to one of the Kuria elders, men should not be blamed over FGM but the girls must blame their mothers who take them for the procedure.
