STORYLINE:
Positive cases of bird flu were confirmed in several countries in Europe and
Africa on Monday, as experts gathered in
France hoping to come up with a common strategy to fight the deadly
H5N1 strain of the virus.
Niger became the second sub-Saharan
African country with confirmed cases of the deadly strain, a lab official said on Monday.
H5N1 had earlier been confirmed in Nigeria, Niger's southern neighbour. It also has been confirmed in
Egypt.
Experts have been particularly concerned about the spread of H5N1 to Africa, unprepared for such a health crisis because of weak infrastructure.
Bernard Vallat, the director of the World Organisation for Animal Health, known by its French acronym OIE, said it was not surprising that H5N1 was confirmed in Niger, which he said was closely tied economically to Nigeria
The swans were found two weeks ago near Plivsko Lake in central
Bosnia.
